  • Radiation and its various industrial applications have been growing at approximately 10 percent per year for the past decade in Korea. As a result, the importance of the Education and Training (E&T) in radiation protection is of upmost importance. This paper is intended to investigate the present status of the E&T on radiation protection and safety in Korea and to draw up the improvements of the E&T courses required for building the national radiation safety infrastructure. For these purposes, the E&T data from the six major domestic organizations providing radiation protection training courses were investigated and analyzed. Each of the organizations is offering several kinds of E&T courses based on their own specific functions. These organizations have administrative facilities equipped with the latest technology for E&T in radiation protection. The E&T courses mainly cover the training courses for radiation workers, radiological emergency staff, license applicants, license holders, and regulatory staff. In 2010, a total of 58 E&T courses were carried out across six organizations. The conclusions make a number of observations highlighting challenges such as: establishing a formal feedback mechanism, introducing more practical training sessions, developing training courses tailored to the job categories and target audiences, and designing education and training courses in radiation protection that comply with current obligations as well as future requirements.

  • The importance of security for virtualization products has been increased with the activation policy of cloud computing and it is necessary to analyze cyber security threats and develop security requirements for virtualization products to provide with more secure cloud environments. This paper is a preliminary study with the purpose of developing security functional requirements through analyzing security features and cyber security threats as well as comparison of foreign countries' cases for virtualization products. To do this, the paper compares evaluation schemes for virtualization products in US and UK foreign countries, and analyzes the cyber security threats, security objectives and security requirements in both countries. Furthermore, it proposes the essential checking items and processes for developing security functional requirements about security features of virtualization products to contribute to its more secure development and the establishment of related security evaluation standards.

  • Single Sign-On (SSO) service manages user's account passwords from multiple websites so that security in a high level is required. Users who use the SSO service are authenticated through the Identity Provider (IdP) when logging into the website. We present the security requirements that IdP can take in order to minimize the user's risk whose IdP account is compromised. We describe the security threats that arise when the security requirements are not satisfied. Through evaluation, we prove that the attacker's session cannot be canceled even if the user recognizes the attack if the IdP does not satisfy the security requirements.

  • The heat transport system transients of Wolsong 2,3,4 nuclear power plants were analysed during abnormal operating conditions. The compliance with requirements of AECB Regulatory Document R-77 for CANDU reactor was estimated. The analysis results showed that for each postulated accident the peak pressure values in the reactor headers are within the acceptance criteria given in ASME code requirements. The effect of LRV that is one of the overpressure protection device was very minor.

  • Since 1998 for protection of marine pollution, all ships must have oil filtering equipment and 15ppm bilge alarms which satisfy Requirements of MARPOL 73/78. Oily-water separator used in machinery area of ships usually consists of two parts; one is filtering equipment and the other is oil content meter(OCM). This study presents optical characteristics of bilge were acquired form oil content sensing module. The oil content sensing module consists of IR-LED light source, photo-diode light receivers, and a glass tube for bilge water sample. The experiment with the bilge water demonstrates various valuable optical properties. These optical properties suggest notes and guides to make the low-cost, easy operation and good performance commercial type OCM that satisfy the requirements of MARPOL 73/78.

  • IGBT devices have the best features of both power MOSFETs and power bipolar transistors, i. e., efficient voltage gate drive requirements and high current density capability. The interaction of the IGBT with the load circuit can be described using the device model and the state equation of the load circuit. The protection circuit requirements are unique for the IGBT and can be examined using the model.

  • At the end of last year, Korean nuclear power plants, APR-1400 and a research reactor have been contracted to build plants at United Arab Emirates and Jordan. Since 1959, a historical background of nuclear technologies in Korea is summarized. The safety requirements for Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems in Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) are discussed. Specific descriptions on the typical safety classification of I&C systems, the definitions of the electrical class 1E and the countermeasures against common caused failures are provided. And summaries of typical I&C systems such as the protection systems, the control systems, the instrumentations, the monitoring systems and a control room in NPP are introduced. Strict requirements on the development of the digital computer systems in nuclear applications are described.

  • The national long-term R&D program, updated in 1997, requires Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) to complete by the year 2006 the basic design of Korea Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor(KALIMER), along with supporting R&D work, with the capability of resolving the issue of spent fuel storage as well as with significantly enhanced safety. KALIMER is a 150 MWe pool-type sodium cooled prototype reactor that uses metallic fuel. The conceptual design is currently under way to establish a self-consistent design meeting a set of major safety design requirements for accident prevention. Some of the current emphasis includes those for inherent and passive means of negative reactivity insertion and decay heat removal, high shutdown reliability, prevention of and protection from sodium chemical reaction, and high seismic margin, among others. All of these requirements affect the reactor design significantly and involve extensive supporting R&D programs. This paper summarizes some of the results of conceptual engineering and design analyses performed for the safety of HAMMER in the area of inherent safety, passive decay heat removal, sodium water reaction, and seismic isolation.

  • In this paper, we provide safety requirements and advices to guarantee the safety of an interface in a level crossing system which is an interface between the conventional facilities and the new ATP (Automatic Train Protection) system, as well as we accomplish a safety management for the facilities of a country that has a different standard with already standardized ATP system. The system model has been made based on a safety activity of the international standard, and then a tolerance of a risk by the safety activity through PHA (Preliminary Hazard Analysis) has been analyzed. finally we achieved HIA (Hazard Identification and Analysis) for the assumptions that have been produced from a operating scenario and a functional interface. Thus, the safety requirements for the interface has been provided from the safety plan of HIA, and we showed the safety activity to guarantee the system safety through HIA which was depend on the design.

  • The goal of fire prevention research is to eliminate fires as a cause of fatal accidents and there are two main areas of research. One is to prevent flame propagation during in-flight and it addresses fire hazards. The other is to minimize the possibility of flame penetration or fuselage burn-through and it aims toward post-crash survival include crash protection, emergency evacuation and post-evacuation survival. Civil aviation authorities world-wide are trying to identify threats and measure performance for fire prevention. The results of research are standardized and given as general directions of test methods. This paper has prepared to study and present the means of compliance to the fire prevention requirements and applicable test methods.
