  • It is currently increasing to use surge protection devices in the protection of various electronic circuits from the transient overvoltages such as lightning strikes and switching surges. For this reason, the simulation methods, which can easily predict the protection performance of the devices, are strongly required in order to design the adequate surge protection circuits in lightning surge cut-off performance and economic aspects. This paper deals with ZnO varistor modeling method for designing a surge protection circuit and suggests the Pspice simulation model which takes the characteristic of varying clamping voltage into consideration during the time-to-crest, in range of $8{\sim}30{\mu}s$, of surge current applied to a ZnO varistor. The ZnO varistor Pspice simulation data introduced in this paper has produced almost same values as the measured results experimentally.

  • To investigate removal effects of nutrients in stormwater runoff by soil of riparian protection zone, soil column experiment was conducted for 20 months. Artificial stormwater runoff containing phosphate and nitrate was applied on the surface of soil column twice a week, and phosphate and nitrate concentrations were measured from the leached water. Soil of riparian protection zone reduced the released amount of infiltrated water to the surrounding water. After infiltration of 1m depth of soil column, average removal rates of phosphate and nitrate were 97.7 % and 74.7 %, respectively. As main mechanisms of phosphate are adsorption to soil particle and utilization by plants, periodical replacement of soil and harvesting of plant at the end of growing season are required. For the removal of nutrients in stormwater runoff by the soil layer, soil of riparian protection zone has higher hydraulic conductivity to infiltrate stormwater. Sandy soil having hydraulic conductivity of about $1{\times}10^{-2}cm/s$ range might be appropriate for this purpose.

  • Erwinia amylovora is a devastating bacterial plant pathogen that infects Rosaceae including apple and pear and causes fire blight. Bacteriophages have been considered as a biological control agent for preventing bacterial infections of plants. In this study, nine bacteriophages (ΦFifi011, ΦFifi044, ΦFifi051, ΦFifi067, ΦFifi106, ΦFifi287, ΦFifi318, ΦFifi450, and ΦFifi451) were isolated from soil and water samples in seven orchards with fire blight in Korea. The genetic diversity of bacteriophage isolates was confirmed through restriction fragment length polymorphism pattern analysis. Host range of the nine phages was tested against 45 E. amylovora strains and 14 E. pyrifoliae strains and nine other bacterial strains. Among the nine phages, ΦFifi044 and ΦFifi451 infected and lysed E. amylovora only. And the remaining seven phages infected both E. amylovora and E. pyrifoliae. The results suggest that the isolated phages were different from each other and effective to control E. amylovora, providing a basis to develop biological agents and utilizing phage cocktails.

  • Background: Given that there are many Iranian women who have never had a Pap smear, this study was designed to develop and validate a measurement tool based on the Protection Motivation Theory to assess factors influencing the Iranian women's intention to perform first Pap testing. Materials and Methods: In this psychometric research, to determine the Content Validity Index (CVI) and the Content Validity Ratio (CVR), a panel of experts (n=10) reviewed scale items. Reliability was estimated through the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (n=30) and internal consistency (n=240). Also, factor analysis (exploratory and conformity) was performed on the data of the sample women who had never had a Pap smear test (n=240). Results: A 26-item questionnaire was developed. The CVI and CVR scores of the scale were 0.89 and 0.90, respectively. Exploratory factor analysis loaded a 26-item with seven factors questionnaire (perceived vulnerability and severity, fear, response costs, response efficacy, self-efficacy, and protection motivation (or intention)) that jointly accounted for 72.76% of the observed variance. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good fit for the data. Internal consistency (range 0.70-0.93) and test-retest reliability (range 0.72-0.96) of sub-scales were acceptable. Conclusions: This study showed that the designed instrument was a valid and reliable tool for measuring the factors influencing the women's intention to perform their first Pap testing.

  • Recently, a mutual interference threat has been increasing among the radar systems due to the rapid growth of the military radar operation. In this paper, the radar interference protection criteria is presented for interoperability in terms of the radar coverage and target detection probability in association with the international recommendation on the interference spectrum by ITU-R. The required criteria for the minimum allowable interference is also presented in terms of INR. In order to ensure the maximum detection probability of the radar under the mutual interference situation, only 5 % of detection range loss is allowed for the case of INR of -6 dB, and required SNR is presented at each INR in terms of the detection range and detection probability. This result will be useful for establishing the interference protection criteria in the combined military radar systems.

  • From the AC analysis results utilizing a two dimensional device simulator, the ac equivalent-circuit modeling of the ESD protection devices is executed. It is explained that the ac equivalent circuit of the NMOS protection transistor is modeled by a rather complicated form and that, depending on the frequency range, the error can be large if it is modeled by a simple RC serial circuit. It is also shown that the ac equivalent circuit of the thyristor-type pnpn protection device can be modeled by a simple RC serial circuit. Based on the circuit simulations utilizing the extracted equivalent circuits, the effects of the parasitics in the protection device on the characteristics of LNA are examined when the LNA, which is one of the important RF circuits, is equipped with the protection device. It is explained that a large error can result in estimating the circuit characteristics if the NMOS protection transistor is modeled by a simple capacitor. It is also confirmed that the degradation of the LNA characteristics by incorporating the ESD protection device can be reduced a lot by adopting the suggested pnpn device.
