  • In a previous paper, the distance relay algorithm for protecting of the underground power cable system was introduced. It effectively advance the errors using ACI(Advanced Computing Intelligence) technique. In this algorithm, the optimization was performed by fuzzy inference system and genetic algorithm. In this paper, hardware system based on ACI technique is introduced and tested by hardware test.

  • Recently, several developments of real-time simulators have been reported. But they are very high cost. And then they are difficult to apply for relay testing in small business. This paper presents the structure and performance of a new pc based, low cost, tester to digital protection relays. Fault transients are generated either by simulating signals using EMTP or by recorded fault signals.

  • There are conditions that can be unbalanced three phase currents in a large generator by untransposed lines, unbalanced loads, unsymmetrical faults, and open phases. The unbalanced conditions can producing negative sequence components of current that induce two times frequence current in the surface of the rotor, the retaining rings, the slot wedges in the field windings. These rotor currents make the rotor rapidly overheat, so the rotor can cause substantial damage in a very short time. This paper presents the digital negative sequence relay algorithm for unbalanced protection in a generator. The proposed algorithm was tested by using collected current signals on PSCAD/EMTDC considering a hydro turbine based generator control system. It can be seen that the proposed relaying by negative sequence current is useful for detection of unbalanced state of large generator.

  • The need to accommodate much complex algorithm. high communication functionality and easier user interface lays heavy burden on the software developer of the protection relay these days. Using lightweight real-time kernel like uC/OS, the software development process can have much structural and easier feature. And total cost needed to development and maintenance of the software also can be reduced by development based on these real-time kernels.

  • Distributed generation (IX;) plays an important role in the power system nowadays. Over-current relay, widely used in the DG protection, causes a wide outage section and long time delay. This paper proposes a DG protection technique to minimize the outage section. The proposed method uses three directional over-current relays with delay, which are connected to the point of common coupling. The method can minimize the outage section.

  • Maloperation of protective relays is one of the major causes for cascading tripping in WANS. Another line trip followed by a previous line trip may occur due to overloading of the line, because of the load redistribution or unwanted trip of a backup relay due to change in the flow of fault current. Evaluation of each line is required by considering both of these effects. A new index named Line Security Index (LSI) is proposed in this paper which combines both Vulnerability Index (VI) and Protectability Index (PI) to completely evaluate the security of individual lines and their importance in the power grid. Computer simulations have been performed on the Korean power grid data to establish the feasibility of the proposed idea.

  • This paper analyzes operation sensitivity of a relay, a blind spot of differential protection relaying, and how to protect the blind spot in protective relying of $3{\Phi}$ Y-Delta transformer consisting of three $1{\Phi}$ transformers which Korean pumped storage power plants have been using. Each different protective relayings must be adopted because there are differences between $3{\Phi}$ trans-former and $3{\Phi}$ transformer consisting of three $1{\Phi}$ trans formers. Also, in the system using high resistance grounding for fault current restriction of delta side, protection for delta side faults have to be considered properly.

  • Protection in HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) have the very fast velocity of fault detection. Because Fault in HVDC has the fast propagation, large currents, high interruption cost. The focus to velocity caused possibility of errors like a detection error like a high impedance fault. In this paper, Proposed complex composition for get the reliability and velocity. That used SFCL(Super Conducting Fault Current Limiter), Protection Zone and DTS(Distributed Temperature Sensing). The SFCL was detect the fault by quench and DTS&Protection Zone were perceive the detect by variation too. To examine the proposed method, PSCAD/EMTDC simulated. The results of simulation, proposed methods could the detect of fault to whole HVDC line. And that improved the reliability of fault clearing.

  • This paper describes an adaptive distance relay for double-circuit line protection with mutual impedance and fault resistance. Double-circuit lines have two operating condition; both lines of a double-circuit line are in operation and one line is switched-off and both ends of the line are grounded. For optimal distance protection, the trip region is calculated, which have respect to mutual impedance and fault resistance.
