  • This paper presents two-step simulations to calculate the influence of blast-induced pressures on explosion-protection valves installed at the boundary between a protection facility and a tunnel entering the facility. The first step is to calculate the respective overpressure on the entrance and exit of the tunnel when an explosion occurs near the tunnel entrance and exit to approach the protection facility. Secondly, the blast pressures on the explosion-protection valves mounted to walls located near the tunnel inside approaching the protection facility are analyzed with a 0.1 ms time variation using the results obtained from the first-step calculations. The following conclusions could be derived as a results: (1) The analysis of the entrance tunnel scenario, P1, leads to the maximum overpressure of 47 kPa, approximately a half of the ambient pressure, at the inner entrance due to the effect of blast barrier. For the scenario, P2, the case not blocked by the barrier, the maximum overpressure is 628 kPa, which is relatively high, namely, 5.2 times the ambient pressure. (2) It is observed that the pressure for the entrance tunnel is effectively mitigated because the initial blast pressures are partially offset from each other according to the geometry of the entrance and a portion of the pressures is discharged to the outside.

  • Background: We have reported the radiation could activate STAT3, which subsequently promotes the invasion of A549 cells. We here explored the dose- and time-response of STAT3 to radiation and the effect of radiation on upstream signaling molecules. Materials and Methods: A549 cells were irradiated with different doses of ${\gamma}$-rays. The expression of and nucleus translocation of p-STAT3 in A549 cells were detected by immunoblotting and immunofluorescence, respectively. The level of phosphorylated EGFR was also assessed by immunoblotting, and IL-6 expression was detected by real time PCR and ELISA. Results: Radiation promoted the phosphorylation of STAT3 at Y705 in a dose- and time-dependent manner and nuclear translocation. The level of phosphorylated EGFR in A549 cells increased after radiation. In additional, the mRNA and protein levels of IL-6 in A549 cells were also up regulated by radiation. Conclusions: STAT3 is activated by radiation in a dose-and time-dependent manner, probably due to radiation-induced activation of EGFR or secretion of IL-6 in A549 cells.

  • In this paper, we introduce the design consideration of the lightning induced transient protection circuit for the indirect lightning strike on the avionics equipment. The lightning induced surge voltage, which is so-called as indirect effects of lightning, may cause a functional failure or physical damage to the electrical and electronic equipment of aircraft. In order to protect the electrical and electronic equipment of aircraft from the indirect effects of lightning, we should analyze the effect of lightning strike on aircraft and consider applying protection design for each avionics device. However, lightning induced transient protection circuits can have unintended consequences because parasitic inductance elements are exist in PCB and TVS diodes. In this paper, we introduce the design method of the protection circuit considering the parasitic inductance of the protection circuit. In addition, we show the result of verification test performed to validate the protection circuits for indirect effects of lightning.

  • In the trend of continuously increasing collection and use of personal information, there are legal grounds for protecting personal information and various policies and systems are implemented, but there is insufficient analysis about education and its effect of personal information protection. In this study, we surveyed and analyzed the degree of awareness and actual perception level in the protection of personal information of college students, and investigated the satisfaction of personal information protection education. The results of the analysis showed that students' interest in privacy protection and concern about personal information exposure was very high, but the efforts to protect personal information and the perception level of rights and systems for protecting personal information was very low. In addition, the experience and satisfaction of education for personal information protection were found to be very low. Students felt that the necessity of education for personal information protection was strongly agreed and preferred regular and continuous education rather than one-time education.

  • To assess the adverse effects of suspended solids on fishes, the hatching rate of embryo, and survival and growth of larvae were measured with common fish species of river such as crusian carp (Carassius auratus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and medaka (Oryzias latipes). Bioassay on hatching rate of embryo was conducted with a range of turbidity as 10 levels from 0.2 to 8,080 NTU. Another bioassay on 4-day larval survival and 21-day larval growth were also conducted with a range of turbidity as 8 levels from 0.1 to 8,260 NTU, and 6 levels from 0.7 to 2,030 NTU, respectively. The hatching rate of C. auratus was not significantly different from that of control at turbidity below 4,040 NTU, whereas it decreased when turbidity was 8,080 NTU (p<0.05). The hatching rate of C. carpio was not affected by concentration of suspended solids. For O. latipes, the hatching rate significantly decreased from 254 NTU (p<0.001) and it was zero when turbidity was 8,080 NTU. The 4-day survival of larvae of all 3 species was not affected by turbidity, while the larval growth of all 3 species was significantly affected. The turbidity effect on the growth of C. auratus and C. carpio was observed from 7 days after the exposure at turbidity level of 145, 143 NTU, respectively. The turbidity effect on the growth of O. latipes was observed from 14 days after the exposure at turbidity level of 254 NTU. The results of this study will provide the basic information for the derivation of water quality criteria on suspended solids for the protection of aquatic ecosystem and the quantitative ecological risk assessment of freshwater environment.

  • Powdery mildew caused by Podosphaera xanthii is a disease in cucurbit crops especially in green house. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of alternative fungicide spraying system for control of powdery mildew disease. We selected four fungicides with different mode of action and made three treatment combinations of each fungicide in 2017. Pyraclostrobin-flutianyl-penthiopyrad treatment showed the highest control value (87%) while, pyraclostrobin-pyraclostrobin-pyraclostrobin treatment showed the lowest control value (32.5%). So it seemed like the treatment was not suitable for control of powdery mildew. In 2018, pyraclostrobin of pyraclostrobin-flutianyl-penthiopyrad was replaced to contact fungicide called iminoctadine-tris-albesilate and compared control effect of two treatments. Two of the treatments showed similar control value (87.0% for pyraclostrobin, 89.0% for iminoctadine-tris-albesilate). These two tests in 2017 and 2018 indicated that alternative treatment of different fungicides is essential for controlling of powdery mildew and inhibiting development of fungicide resistance.

  • In order to effectively protect a penetrator, the conically shaped protector was proposed and the protection capability was investigated. The collision and penetration of the penetrator with the protector were analyzed using dynamic finite element analysis. The post impact behaviors of the penetrator, i.e., flying velocity and the change of attitude angle, were monitored to investigate the protection capability. The flying velocity and the attitude angle are used to investigate the deviation and the penetration power respectively. The effect of rotation speed of the protector and the collision position on the protection capability is investigated in the viewpoint of deviation and attitude angle when penetrator colliding with our tank.

  • Mussels have been commonly used in bioassay for quality assessments of environment. Moreover, several standard protocols for the developmental bioassay of bivalves have been proposed. In this study, the EC50 of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was determined using mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis embryonic developmental bioassay. To determine the sensitivity of M. galloprovincialis, their fertilized eggs were exposed to five PAHs (2-metylnaphthalene, fluorene, dibenzothiophene, phenanthrene, pyrene). The EC50 of 2-metylnaphthalene, fluorene, dibenzothiophene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were 232, 273, 67.9, 43.2, and $33.1{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The overall sensitivity of M. galloprovincialis in the present developmental bioassay was similar to or more sensitive than that of other marine organisms commonly used in aquatic bioassays. The results of this study could be provide with fundamental data of setting standard for protection of marine life and or can use prediction the aquatic toxicity of PAHs.
