The Chinese crested tern (Thalasseus bersteini) is one of the most globally endangered species, listed as "Critically Endangered (CE)" on the IUCN Red List, with only approximately 30-49 individuals surviving in the wild. Chinese crested terns were discovered to breed in South Korea for the first time in 2016 while conducting a census on uninhabited islands. The Ministry of Environment has declared the breeding habitat of the Chinese crested terns as "Specified Island" to protect this CE species. However, brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) inhabiting the breeding grounds of the Chinese crested terns and Black-tailed gulls may potentially pose a threat to the breeding of these avian species. Therefore, we conducted a study on the feeding behavior of brown rats involving stable isotope analysis to determine their food sources. Fecal analysis showed that brown rats mainly fed on plants, whereas they scarcely fed on animals, such as insects. In addition, the stable isotope analysis showed that the δ13C values of brown rats, insects, and Indian goosegrasses were approximately -16 to -11‰, whereas the δ13C value of Chinese crested terns that obtained their food from the marine ecosystem was approximately -22 to -18‰. Hence, we conclude that the source of carbon for brown rats on this island is the terrestrial ecosystem. We ruled out the possibility of any direct prey-predator interaction between the brown rat and the Chinese crested tern or Black-tailed gull.

This study is determined by tree vigor of analyzing of each object's growth condition in Locational Characteristics and compare the result with impediment extent rate in crown area to provide the management Study about the influence of man-made structures in numbers of protected trees. 68 places where are in the list of Kimpo protected trees were researched in Natural environments, vital degree of trees, number of trees. Crown area was calculated surveying it around the directions of North, East, South and West branching out. Impediment in the area was analyzed after classified into artificial impediment like paved surface(ascon, concrete, block, etc.), a building and a breast wall and natural impediment like soil, stonework and gravel and conclusions are as follow. In analyzing of natural environments, he ground where protected trees have located is consist of 72.05 of manmade structure and artificial in all. There are many protected trees which have less space than crown area for growth suggested by Woo-kyung Sim and Se-kyun Shin in 1992. And it was analyzed that making growth space for protected trees and management of impediment are urgently needed because of that the proportion of impediment covering the crown area has increased as cities are becoming more urbanized results in transforming of trees and weakness of tree vigor. This research shows that under 20% of in crown area is tree vigor determination 1-2 grade 21-50% under is 2-3 grade, higher than 50% is 3-5 grade. More impediment have more difficulty for growing, with the management of root system of protected trees need to be under 20% of rate of land is necessary was improved. As follows are suggested about the standard of management in artificial impediment which influence the number of trees. Firstly, impediment in crown area must be restricted under 20%, but in case outside of the area is not artificial the rate could be higher considerable. Secondly, protected trees growth space secured as much as crown area and impediment must be installed outside the crown area. Thirdly, to move the protected trees, condition of growth space secure must be considered. Fourthly, to develope land, the area around protected trees should be utilized in a park, the area of impediment installation in crown area should be limited as well. Fifthly, As many shown in previous research, for the improvement of old big trees and protected trees, need the tax favor of landowner and purchase of around land, to manage, it needs the budget of local government and advice of expert. Also the study on how various kind of impediment nearby protected trees influence on them has to be continued.
The number of protected areas has been steadily increased in Korea to achieve Aichi Target 11, and there are studies on potential protected areas that required additional designation. However, there has been an insufficient assessment of the complementarity of protected areas to conserve biodiversity effectively. This study identified the potential habitat areas using the species distribution model for plant species from the 3rd National Ecosystem Survey and compared the plant species abundance in the existing protected area and the potential protected areas using the similarity indices, such as the Jaccard index, Sorenson index, and Bray-Curtis index. As a result, we found that the complementarity of the existing protected areas and most potential protected areas were low, leading to the preservation of similar plant species. Only the buffer zone for Korea National Arboretum had high complementarity and thus is important to conserve some species with the other protected areas. This study confirmed that it was necessary to select additional protected areas outside the existing or potential protected areas to protect plant species with a low inclusion ratio of potential habitats within the protected area. This study is significant because it identified the ecological representativeness of each protected area to examine if the individual protected area can conserve unique and various species and proposed a method of finding candidate areas for additional conservation spatially. The findings of this study can be a valuable reference for the qualitative improvement of protected areas through the complementarity assessments, including animals and the effectiveness assessment study of protected areas using the National Ecosystem Survey data in the future.

The Baekdudaegan protected area is a regulatory-oriented policy that does not consider the residents, and has been affected by the shrinking of local economy and the reduction of community activities. In order to minimize the damages, Baekdudaegan resident support programs has been implemented but various problems have been pointed out failing to lead to local revitalization. In addition, the zoning districts consists only of the core district and buffer district, which makes it more difficult to improve the lives and satisfy the needs of residents due to the stricter regulations. This study suggests the revitalization of Baekdu-daegan protected area by reforming the zoning system of Baekdu-daegan protected area. Considering related plans and systems, legal validity, residents' repulsion, area, etc., four reorganization plans were drawn according to each strength and weakness. Principles, additional permissible activities, example of amendment to 'Baekdudaegan Protection Act' according to each plan were also presented. The results of this study can contribute to the improvement of income and welfare of the residents in Baekdudaegan protected area. However, further research is needed because it is a limitation that the specific scope of the proposed plans could not be set.

Yongneup wetland protected area, the only high moor in Korea, is a core area to conserve biodiversity. Even though the Yongneup wetland protected area is relatively small, various plant species are distributed in the Yongneup wetland protected area because it includes various habitats showing different environmental gradients. Vascular plants distributed in the Yongneup wetland protected area were identified as a total of 376 taxa that is composed of 73 families, 217 genera, 322 species, 3 subspecies, 44 varieties and 7 forms. For endangered plants designated by the Ministry of Environment, 5 species including Trientalis europaea var. arctica, Lilium dauricum, Halenia corniculata, Lychnis wilfordii and Menyanthes trifoliata were found and 34 taxa were confirmed to be distributed only in the mountainous wetland habitats. Regarding naturalized plants, a total of 11 taxa were distributed, but most of them were distributed in the areas where artificial interference has occurred. And in areas inside the wetlands that are relatively well preserved, 2 species of Bidens frondosa and Erigeron annuus were observed. In this study, the occurrence and distribution of Pseudostellaria baekdusanensis M. Kim, which was recently found in Mt. Baekdu and reported as a new species, were identified in the Yongneup wetland protected area. A wetland is a very vulnerable area to drastic environmental changes and damages to its ecosystem could cause the extinction of rare plant species which are distributed only in the wetlands. Therefore, it is mandatory that current status of the Yongneup wetland protected area is evaluated and actions to prevent rapid environmental changes are taken. Fourteen separate investigations were conducted in 2013 and another four in 2014, to evaluate current status of the Yongneup wetland protected area. These investigations have provided us the basic information for future actions of conservation and restoration.
Painting has protected metallic stack but the paint films may be degraded and corrosion problem can be arisen. To protect the painted metal stack, cathodic protection can be applied. If cathodic protection is applied to bare metal, only small area may be protected. However, if cathodic protection is applied to painted metal surface, large area can be protected and the lifetime of paint films can be extended. High corrosion resistant alloys were corroded at a Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) facility of power plant within a short period and thus cathodic protection can be used to protect these metals. On the base of computer simulation, if cathodic protection is applied to bare metal in a FGD environment, it was estimated that applied current could almost be spent to protect area near the anode. However, if cathodic protection is applied to high resistant-coated metal, the much larger area from the anode could be effectively protected.
The Khogno Khan mountain special protected area belongs to Khogno Khan subdistrict of Gurvanbulag district of Bulgan Province and is 46.9 sq.km. with its main feature being mountain forest zone. In this paper we present some results of research of the Anthropological and archaeological team of Mongolian Korean Joint research expeditions carryied out in Khogno Khan mountain special protected area from 27 July to 1 August, 2000. During archaeological reconnaissance we discovered around 27 localities of archaeological monuments belonging to different historical periods (from the Neolithic up to the Mongolian period, $13^{th}-17^{th}$ Century) in the territory of the Khogno Khan special protected area. Based on the results, we especially want to point out 1). The archaeological and historic monuments (from the Neolithic up to modern era) found in the Khogno Khan mountain and its surrounding area show that since the Neolithic period (around 8000 years ago) this area was occupied by the ancestors of Mongolians and it was used during subsequent historic periods on the one hand. 2). On the other hand the Khogno Khan mountain region was one area where there occurred intensive admixture between populations of Kurgan culture, Deerstone culture from the West Mongolia and the population of slab graves culture from Central and East Mongolia during Bronze and Early Iron Age. 3). Today the mountain is one of the area with a unique assemblage of archaeological monuments from different historic periods, what naturally seems like an open-air natural museum of Mongolian Prehistory.

This research intends to suggest the ways to improve protected area management in Korea. To this end, the current protected areas appointed in the nation and their management has been examined, and the problems of management have been identified by means of a field research of protected areas and a survey. In addition, a scheme for an integrated management system has been suggested for management improvement, and a management plan guide, as well as after-evaluation guide, has been suggested. The outcome of the research is as follows. First, the protected area management plan is needed since the protected area in our nation is not managed in a proper way after being appointed as such. Second, when making a management plan, a management organization should make a management plan that can attract voluntary participation from stake-holders by means of efficient communications with them. Third, to maintain the management plan in a consistent and systematic way, related policy, law, and institutions should be (re)formulated. Fourth, an organization responsible only for management of protected areas should be established in consideration of management inefficiency due to the overlapped appointment of managing the protected area. Fifth, the management plan guide and after-evaluation guide can be used for effective protected area management. The results of this study are expected to be helpful for creating a management improvement scheme to address the problems related to the protected areas in our nation. But, it is required to review the guides for the management plan and after-evaluation, and consistent and systemic support from the government in such areas as legislation and policy are also in great need.

Suncheonman-Bay and its surrounding areas play important roles as habitats for migratory birds. However, sustainable management of these areas is difficult because of the development pressure of private lands. Therefore, the areas surrounding Suncheonman-Bay must be classified as additional protected areas; for this, it is necessary to gather concrete and objective evidence and ensure protected area management. Further, compensation measures must be considered when acquiring a private property as an additional protected area. In this study, we distinguish protected areas, such as core, buffer, and transition areas, within a private area by using data from the Winter Waterbird Census of Korea and MARXAN software, a spatial conservation prioritization tool. We applied ecosystem services to apply Payment for Ecosystem services (PES) as compensation measures. Watershed conservation (supply), climate control (regulation), supporting habitats (support), and recreation (culture) etc. were evaluated by calculating the economic value of these ecosystem services. Eastern, western, and northern forests and rice fields of Suncheonman-Bay were shown to have a number of core areas for the preservation of endangered species. The ecosystem service value of the additional protected areas was estimated at 17.5 million KRW/ha/year. We believe that our study result could be used to establish protected areas to preserve major habitats, as well as include areas adjacent to such major habitats that play a vital role in endangered species conservation. In addition, through this study, we highlight the need for an objective basis to establish protected areas.
The purpose of this study intends to suggest a basic information to establish protected area policy by analyzing environmental consciousness and environmental protection behavior of citizen after Hebei Spirit oil spill. During May-June of 2011, a total of 987 respondents completed at 5 major cities (Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju) in Korea. The result showed that more previous experience of environment as recognition of oil spill damaged area, volunteer activity experience, participation in the organization for environmental conservation, and participation in education program led to more positive attitude to environment. Therefore, the result of this study will contribute to manage protected area in balancing ecological conservation and utilization.
