  • The stage is ceremonial and legendary space unlike the ordinary world. Performance is not simply scrip-staged, but spatial art based on tempo that transmits extreme condition. The stage art is a visual art combined with stage settings, lighting, customs and the like. I exemplify the stage of Middle Age and Renaissance in the history of the art of public performance and so I review that what meditative functions each stage perform and that as what pattern of media it can be conceptualized. In this thesis, I divide the places of public performance Into the spaces of proscenium and polygon and also set up the concepts of hot and cool that McLuhan presents for each space. So, the degree of participation could be different according to the distinction of quantity of information, which is communication following the patterns of spaces. The basis of public performance might be the communication between co-actors and audiences. Since the sense of the art of public performance is the art in the process of establishing the meaning based on the communication with co-actors, it is not a confirmed and fixed one, but rather a reflexive one that can be created and changed continuously. Therefore, audiences should be regarded as the subjects, who are making the art of public performance with co-actors.

  • This study examines the space composition and character of 16th Renaissance Theater base on the theory of typology and interpreter in the european traditional classic theater. Baroque theater and early modern theater is considered as a symbolic representation of the renaissance theater's organization. In the historical theory, theater Teatro Olimpico and Teatro Farnese was a common tool and best systeme in reflecting renaissance type and perspective system. This role of type as life cycle and new style of theater permanent design has get its value with the population increase. This study attempts to revaluate the need of space typology in modern society through a critical review of theater and its use as a visual space. Content analysis was used to discuss the topics of this study including the historical background of the theater, the relationship between amphitheater and modern theater design, and the role of scenery, auditorium and its impact on Proscenium scenery. The scope of the study is limited to the comparison of 16th european theater and contemporary theater space use program from the space critic and sociologist. Today the concept of theatrical space is altered with the typology of classic and interpreter space. This study provides insights for the future implications of theatrical space in developing space for its a new definition as cultural representation.

  • In the present experimental study, based on a real-scale theater, a 1/14 reduced-scale model was constructed, and the effects of natural vent and fire curtain in fire of a theater stage were investigated. The case without fire curtain under the opened natural vent showed lower temperatures in the stage, whereas the case with fire curtain under the opened natural vent showed lower temperatures in the auditorium. On the other hand, through analyzing the starting time of the temperature rise at the point near the proscenium opening in the auditorium, it was found that the opened natural vent condition can delay the starting time of smoke spread from the stage to the auditorium and suppress the temperature rise in the auditorium. Under the present experimental conditions, the fire curtain installation did not affect significantly the velocity and mass flow rate of the outflow through the natural vent of the stage, which might be due to openings in the stage. The present results can be used to examine the effects of natural vent and fire curtain in a real-scale fire of a theater and to check the accuracy of the numerical simulation code.

  • Although a fire curtain plays an important role in preventing smoke from spreading to the auditorium in a theater fire, there has been insufficient research on fire curtains. In this study, to check the accuracy of numerical simulation, for previous experiments using a reduced scale model, a numerical simulation was carried out, and the results were compared with previous experimental data. The fire curtain effect was then predicted numerically. A Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was used, and the natural exhaust vent sizes were set to ~10%, ~5%, and ~1% of the stage floor area. The smoke movement was visualized, and the mass flow rates and temperatures were measured and analyzed. In addition, the law of similarity was used to examine the influence of a fire curtain in a real scale theater fire. Without the fire curtain, the present numerical simulation results were in agreement with the previous experimental data within reasonable accuracy. Meanwhile, the fire curtain affects the mass flow rates through the natural exhaust vent and proscenium opening, as well as the start time of soot outflow to the auditorium. Overall, the present results can be used to develop a fire curtain system.

  • Dalgubal drum dance is inherited in a recreated form by incorporating regional symbolism and the dance philosophy and artisticity of Young Hwangbo, the creator, based on the traditional drum dance of the Yeongnam region. This dance having popularity with the transformation of traditional Korean culture has been invited not only to Yeongnam region including Daegu but also to international various venues. This study explores what the movement characteristics of this Dalgubal drum dance are and the unique charm and symbolic meaning of this dance. Specific analysis was conducted through analyzing Dalgubal drum dance video film of the 89th Korean Myeongmujeon's by using Laban Movement Analysis as a research method. The special features of this dance resulted from the LMA analysis in terms of the four categories-Body, Effort, Shape, and Space-reveal simple yet cheerful personalities and strong yet patient characteristics of the people in Daegu. The harmony of drum sounds(music) and movements(dance) creates various characteristics of dances and reveals the beauty and excitement of unique Korean dance. In particular, drum play and its related dance movements create curved linear spatial pattern of arm movements, Spiral Shape in body posture, and diverse floor patterns occupying whole stage space. These movements show the three-dimensional spatial beauty and the artistic ideas for recreation of traditional drum dance, which considered with the spatial structure of the proscenium stage. In addition, the well-organized structure and harmonious movements of this dance show the traditional Korean philosophy, implying heaven, earth, and human being and the wholeness, and the harmony of yin and yang. The dance aims at communication between the audiences and dancers through sharing excitement and the aesthetic beauty of dance. This can be interpreted as a meaningful expression of traditional Korean philosophy developed with the unique value and characteristics of Korean dance.
