Energy-saving devices for 317K VLCC have been developed from a propulsion standpoint. Two ESD candidates were designed via computational tools. The first device WAFon composes of flow-control fins adapted for the ship wake to reduce the loss of rotational energy. The other is WAFon-D, which is a WAFon with a duct to obtain additional thrust and to distribute the inflow velocity on the propeller plane uniform. After selecting the candidates from the computed results, the speed performances were validated with model-tests. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the ESDs may be found in improved hull and propulsive efficiencies through increased wake fraction.

The hydrodynamic effects on resistance and propulsive performance were studied by using the data from model test and full scale speed trials. A series of model tests on 3 geosims for a 60,000 DWT Bulk Carrier was conducted at KIMM's Ship Experimental Towing Tank and the results analyzed by 1978 ITTC Performance Prediction Method show the correlation between 3 geosim models. Also powering data of full scale speed trials were analyzed by the newly developed computer program and the correlation analysis between ship and model was studied.

A ship's screw-propeller produces thrust by rotation and, at the same time, generates rotational flow behind the propeller. This rotational flow has no contribution to the generation of thrust, but instead produces energy loss. By recovering part of the lost energy in the rotational flow, therefore, it is possible to improve the propulsion efficiency. The contra-rotating propeller (CRP) system is the representing example of such devices. Unfortunately, however, neither a design method nor a full-scale performance prediction procedure for the CRP system has been well established yet. The authors have long performed studies on the CRP system, and some of the results from the authors' studies shall be presented and discussed.

Supersonic ejectors are simple mechanical components, which generally perform mixing and/or recompression of two fluid streams. Ejectors have found many applications in engineering. In aerospace engineering, they are used for altitude testing of a propulsion system by reducing the pressure of a test chamber. It is composed of three major sections: a vacuum test chamber, a propulsive nozzle, and a supersonic exhaust diffuser. This paper aims at the improvement of ejector-diffuser performance by focusing attention on reducing exhaust back flow into the test chamber, since alteration of the backflow or recirculation pattern appears as one of the potential means of significantly improving low supersonic ejector-diffuser performance. The simplest backflow-reduction device was an orifice plate at the duct inlet, which would pass the jet and entrained fluid but impede the movement of fluid upstream along the wall. Results clearly showed that the performance of ejector-diffuser system was improved for certain a range of system pressure ratios, whereas the orifice plate was detrimental to the ejector performance for higher pressure ratios. It is also found that there is no change in the performance of diffuser with orifice at its inlet, in terms of its pressure recovery. Hence an appropriately sized orifice system should produce considerable improvement in the ejector-diffuser performance in the intended range of pressure ratios.
With the sharp increase of the oil price, the issue of the energy saving requires even higher propulsive efficiency of the propellers. Traditionally the propellers have been designed with the criteria such as that of Lerbs optimum based on the lifting line theory and the empirical formulae of Lerbs and van Manen giving relations of the wake pitch with the wake non-uniformity. With the aid of the high speed computer, it is now possible to apply the time-consuming iterative approaches for the solution of the lifting surface problems. In this paper we formulate the variational problem to optimize the efficiency of the propeller operating in the given ship wake using the lifting surface method. The variational formulation relating the spanwise circulation distribution with the propulsive efficiency to be maximized is however non-linear in circulation distribution functions, thus the iterative method is applied to the quasi-linearized equations. The blade shape design also requires the iterative procedures, because the shape of the blade which is represented by the lifting surface is unknown a priori. The numerical code was validated with the DTNSRDC propeller 4119 which is well-known to be optimum in uniform inflow condition. In addition existing (well-designed) commercial propellers were selected and compared with the results of the open water tests and the self-propulsion tests.

During the preliminary design phase of aircraft development, it is necessary to evaluate many potential engine/airframe combinations to determine the best solution to given set of mission requirements and it is very important to establish a methodology to calculate precisely engine installed performance. It was carried out to calculate turbofan engine installed performance of a supersonic aircraft for a given engine/aircraft configuration. Thus "Thrust minus drag accounting system" was introduced to identify and calculate the elements of installed thrust or installed propulsive force by using the database based on wind tunnel test data. This paper describes the calculated results of installed thrust of turbofan engine for a supersonic aircraft. aircraft.

A Propulsion System of the CRW(Canard Rotor Wing) type UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) was composed of the turbojet engine to generate the propulsive exhaust gas, and the duct system including main and rotary ducts, the nozzle subsystem including main and tip jet nozzle for three flight modes such as lift/landing mode, low speed transition flight mode and high speed forward flight mode. Transient simulation performance utilized the ICV (Inter-component volume) method and simulated using the SIMULINK. Transient performance analysis was performed on 3 cases. Fuel flow schedules to accelerate from Idle to maximum rotational speed were divided into the step increase of the most severe case and ramp increase cases to avoid the overshoot of turbine inlet temperature, and variations of thrust and the turbine inlet temperature were investigated in some transient analysis cases.

In this paper, the Flow Control Fin(FCF) optimization has been carried out using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) techniques. This study focused on evaluation for the performance of the FCF attached in the stern part of the ship. The main advantage of FCF is to enhance the resistance performance through the lift generation with a forward force component on the foil section, and the propulsive performance by the uniformity of velocity distribution on the propeller plane. This study intended to evaluate these functions and to find optimized FCF form for minimizing viscous resistance and equalizing wake distribution. Four parameters of FCF are used in the study, which were angle and position of FCF, longitudinal location, transverse location, and span length in the optimization process. KRISO 300K VLCC2(KVLCC2) was chosen for an example ship to demonstrate FCF for optimization. The optimization procedure utilized genetic algorithms (GAs), a gradient-based optimizer for the refinement of the solution, and Non-dominated Sorting GA-II(NSGA-II) for Multiobjective Optimization. The results showed that the optimized FCF could enhance the uniformity of wake distribution at the expense of viscous resistance.

Underwater glider with a single buoyancy engine could generally obtain propulsive forces by moving the center of buoyancy and gravity. Futhermore, The hull and internal structure of underwater glider are designed according to the purpose of long-time operation, high speed and a wide variety of payloads (sensors, communications and etc.). In this paper, Ray-type underwater glider featuring flatfish is considered in view of hydrodynamics. The hull design is especially performed by the analysis of fluid resistance and dynamic performance. The resistance performance is analyzed using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). In addition, a simulation program is implemented in order to verify the validity of dynamics modeling and dynamic performances.

This paper describes the method of statistical analysis and its programs for predicting the ship's powering performance. The equation for the wavemaking resistance coefficient is derived as the sectional area coefficients by using the wavemaking resistance theory and its regression coefficients are determined from the regression analysis of the model test results. The equations for the form factor, wake franction and thrust deduction fraction are derived by purely regression analysis of the principal dimensions, sectional area coefficients and model test results. The statistical analyses are performed using the various descriptive statistic and stepwise regression analysis techniques. The powering performance prognosis program is developed to cover the prediction of resistance coefficients, propulsive coefficients, propeller open-water efficiency and various scale effect corrections.
