  • Up to now, High speed train was widely used in France, Germany and Japan. In korea, High speed train was introduced from France train model and operation was made in year 2004. With this high speed operation Know-How, HSR-350 train was developed with our own technology. And now KTX-II which was made by our own technology are running in commercial line. High speed rolling stock system acceleration technology is train propulsion system and this is composed with traction motor, Power transfer system and auxiliary power system. This paper, introduced the performance of the traction propulsion system and other equipment that has been installed at the KTX-II will be secured.

  • We investigate some operation characteristics and energy efficiency of the BLDC motor system driven by different two types power conversion method depends on same battery source for applying to electrical motor propulsion system of a small ship. Also, we suggest an estimation manner of operating performances such as total running distance and operating speed of ships from basic discharge voltage characteristics of batteries. Through some experiments, direct power conversion was better than indirect method on the view point of energy efficiency and the voltage discharge characteristics could be used as important design factor for estimating operating performances of small ships driven by electrical motors.

  • The ostraciiform swimming mode allows the simplest mechanical design and control for underwater vehicle swimming. Propulsion is achieved via the flapping of caudal fin without the body undulatory motion. In this research, the propulsion of underwater vehicles by ostraciiform swimming mode is explored experimentally using an ostraciiform fish robot and some rigid caudal fins. The effects of caudal fin flapping frequency and amplitude on the cruising performance are studied in particular. A theoretical model of propulsion using rigid caudal fin is proposed and identified with the experimental data. An experimental method to obtain the drag coefficient and the added mass of the fish robot is also proposed.

  • Experimental investigations were carried out on an Axi-symmetric Body Model fitted with Pump-jet Propulsor (PJP) in the Cavitation Tunnel at Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL). The tests were intended for evaluating the propulsion characteristics of the body and propulsor. The self propulsion point of the model for two configurations was determined after finding the corrections for tunnel blockage effects and differences in model length at zero trim. The results were found to match closely with the towing tank results. The rotor and stator torques also matched closely over full range of experiment. Further experiments were carried out on the body at $4.5^{\circ}$ angle of trim to investigate the propulsive performance and assess the operational difficulties in the sea. The results indicated an increase in resistance and decrease in rotor thrust; but the balance of torques between the rotor and stator was undisturbed, causing no concern to vehicle roll.

  • A propeller as a propulsion system has been redesigned to improve performance of a target drone. The vortex theory has been applied for the propeller design method. Design variables have been the chord length along the direction of blade radius, the change of blade radius, and the geometric angle of the blade. The existing propeller has been redesigned and modified considering engine RPM change to get the improved thrust at both low and high speeds.

  • Energy-saving devices for 317K VLCC have been developed from a propulsion standpoint. Two ESD candidates were designed via computational tools. The first device WAFon composes of flow-control fins adapted for the ship wake to reduce the loss of rotational energy. The other is WAFon-D, which is a WAFon with a duct to obtain additional thrust and to distribute the inflow velocity on the propeller plane uniform. After selecting the candidates from the computed results, the speed performances were validated with model-tests. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the ESDs may be found in improved hull and propulsive efficiencies through increased wake fraction.

  • In order to develop a deep-underground great train express (GTX) in South Korea, the specifications decision and development of a traction control system (including an inverter and a traction motor), which considers a variety of route conditions, must be advanced. In this study, we examined the running resistance properties of a high-speed traction system based on a variety of tunnel types and vehicle organization methods. Then, we studied the power requirements necessary for the traction motor to maintain balanced speed in the high-speed traction system. From this, we determined the design criteria for the development of a high-speed traction system for use in the deep-underground GTX. Finally, we designed a linear induction motor (LIM) for a propulsion system, and we used the finite element method (FEM) to analyze its performance as it travelled through deep-underground tunnels.

Numerical investigation of detonation combustion wave propagation in pulse detonation combustor with nozzle

  • The exhaust nozzle serves back pressure of Pulse detonation combustor, so combustion chamber gets sufficient pressure for propulsion. In this context recent researches are focused on influence of nozzle effect on single cycle detonation wave propagation and propulsion performance of PDE. The effects of various nozzles like convergent-divergent nozzle, convergent nozzle, divergent nozzle and without nozzle at exit section of detonation tubes were computationally investigated to seek the desired propulsion performance. Further the effect of divergent nozzle length and half angle on detonation wave structure was analyzed. The simulations have been done using Ansys 14 Fluent platform. The LES turbulence model was used to simulate the combustion wave reacting flows in combustor with standard wall function. From these numerical simulations among four acquaint nozzles the highest thrust augmentation could be attained in divergent nozzle geometry and detonation wave propagation velocity eventually reaches to 1830 m/s, which is near about C-J velocity. Smaller the divergent nozzle half angle has a significant effect on faster detonation wave propagation.

  • A small hall thruster with a thrust of about 10 mN and a specific impulse of about 1500 s is being developed with an intent to control or maintain the orbits of small satellites. The total mass, consumed electric power and efficiency of the thruster are approximately 10 kg, 300W and 30%, respectively. The thruster system consists of a hall thruster with a cylindrical cross section, a power processing unit and a Xenon(Xe) gas feed system. Laboratory examination of the thruster performance finds that the thruster meets the design specification.

  • In this study reviewed the validity of the estimated optimum trim by the numerical analysis. For this purpose, the numerical analysis of the trim optimization for 6500TEU container carrier and capesize bulk carrier were carried out using Star-CCM+, which results were compared with the results of model tests. The reliability of results of the numerical analysis was confirmed via comparing the resistance determined by the numerical analysis and model test. The performance of self-propulsion at each trim conditions were estimated using the calculated resistance by numerical analysis. The BHP at each trim condition were calculated by estimated performance of self-propulsion, which trend of results were confirmed similar trend of result of model test.
