In this study, we present experimental observations of artificial supercavitation generated by the injection of compressed air at multiple locations on the body. Experiments were conducted at a cavitation tunnel equipped with a special facility to remove injected air before returning to the test section. Artificial supercavitation, which is generated at a relatively low speed compared to natural supercavitation, is formed asymmetrically on the axis of the body due to the buoyancy effect. In order to accelerate the development of the supercavity and increase the area covering the body, an experimental device capable of additional injection from the body was designed and its performance was evaluated through the model test. The shapes of the supercavity generated by multi-injections of different combinations according to different flow speeds were analyzed using high-speed shadow images. The results show that multiple injections at suitable locations can effectively increase the length of the supercavity and consequently improve propulsion efficiency.
As the 4th industrial revolution progresses, the application of several cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, and mixed reality (MR) in relation to autonomous ships is being considered in the maritime logistics field. The aim of this study was to apply the concept of a digital twin model based on Human Machine Interaction (HMI) including a digital twin model and the role of an operator to a ship. The role of the digital twin is divided into information provision, support, decision, and implementation. The role of the operator is divided into operation, decision-making, supervision, and standby. The system constituting the ship was investigated. The digital twin system that could be applied to the ship was also investigated. The cloud-based digital twin system architecture that could apply investigated applications was divided into ship data collection (part 1), cloud system (part 2), analysis system/ application (part 3), and MR/mobile system (part 4). A Mixed Reality device HoloLens was used as an HMI equipment to perform a simulation test of a digital twin system of an 8 m battery-based electric propulsion ship.

This paper investigates the effect of different flow models on the Pre-Swirl-Stator structural response from the perspective of a non-existing unified design procedure. Due to viscous effects near the propeller plane, the hydrodynamic solution is calculated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Three different models are analysed: without the propeller, with the actuator disk and with the propeller. The main intention of this paper is to clarify the effects of the propeller model on the structural stresses in calm-water and waves which include the ship motion. CFD simulations are performed by means of OpenFOAM, while the structural response is calculated by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM) solver NASTRAN. Calm-water results have shown the inclusion of the propeller necessary from the design perspective, while the wave simulations have shown negligible propeller influence on the resulting stresses arising from the ship motions.

Hydrogen is bridge fuel with high energy content and environmentally friendly to satisfy the stringent IMO regulation relating to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. There is growing interest in hydrogen in numerous nations and regions illustrated by an extensive range of research and development in technology. Regarding maritime applications, researchers have recognized the utilization of hydrogen as a fuel for fuel cells, a device that converts the chemical energy of the fuel to electrical energy. Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), with high working temperature, is easy to combine with the waste heat recovery cycles/devices to increase output power and thermodynamic performances as well. Furthermore, the cold energy from liquid hydrogen supplied to SOFC can also be used to generate more power. In this study, we proposed a SOFC integrated system with the idea of combining the waste heat recovery from the SOFC exhaust stream and cold energy utilization from LH2. The designation is aimed to target small-scale vessel which uses electric propulsion for short distances voyage.

The global price of oil, which is both finite and limited in quantity, has been rising steadily because of the increasing requirements for energy in both developing and developed countries. Furthermore, regulations have been strengthened across all industries to address global warming. Many studies of hull resistance, propulsion and operation of ships have been performed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This study examined the design parameters of the propeller boss cap fin (PBCF) and hub cap for 6,000TEU container ships to improve the propulsion efficiency. The design parameters of PBCF have been selected based on the geometrical shape. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with a propeller open water (POW) test was performed to check the validity of CFD analysis. The design of experiment (DOE) case was selected as a full factorial design, and the experiment was analyzed by POW and CFD analysis. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to determine the correlation among design parameters. Four design alternatives of PBCF were selected from the DOE. The shape of a propeller hub cap was selected as a divergent shape, and the divergent angle was determined by the DOE. Four design alternatives of PBCF were attached to the divergent hub cap, and the POW was estimated by CFD. As a result, the divergent hub cap with PBCF has a negative effect on the POW, which is induced by an increase in torque coefficient. A POW test and cavitation test were performed with a divergent hub cap with PBCF to verify the CFD result. The POW test result showed that the open water efficiency was increased approximately 2% with a divergent hub cap compared to a normal cap. The POW test result was similar to the CFD result, and the divergent hub cap with the PBCF models showed lower open water efficiency. This was attributed to an increase in the torque coefficient just like the CFD results. A cavitation test was performed using the 2 models selected. The test result showed that the hub vortex is increased downstream of the propeller.

The power measurement of main propulsion system on the new vessels can be classified with the direct method acquired from the shaft's strain using strain gauge and the indirect method converted and summed from all of cylinders combustion pressure using mechanical or electrical pickup device during the sea trial. This power is fluctuated by external factors which was influenced by various sea motions with long time interval and by internal factors which was influenced by varying torques of torsional vibration and bending moment, due to mis-aligned shaft and whirling vibration with short time interval. In this paper, the statistical analysis method for the shaft power measurement and assessment using strain gauge in marine vessels are introduced. And these are identified by the low speed two stroke diesel engine model and four stroke medium speed diesel engine model including reduction gear.
Ejector system is a device to transport a low-pressure secondary flow by using a high-pressure primary flow. Ejector system is, in general, composed of a primary nozzle, a mixing section, a casing part for suction of secondary flow and a diffuser. It can induce the secondary flow or affect the secondary chamber pressure by both shear stress and pressure drop which are generated in the primary jet boundary. Ejector system is simple in construction and has no moving parts, so it can not only compress and transport a massive capacity of fluid without trouble, but also has little need for maintenance. Ejectors are widely used in a range of applications such as a turbine-based combined-cycle propulsion system and a high altitude test facility for rocket engine, pressure recovery system, desalination plant and ejector ramjet etc. The primary interest of this study is to set up an applicable model and operating conditions for an ejector in the condition of sonic and subsonic, which can be extended to the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Experimental and theoretical investigation on the sonic and subsonic ejectors with a converging-diverging diffuser was carried out. Optimization technique and numerical simulation was adopted for an optimal geometry design and satisfying the required performance at design point of ejector for hydrogen recirculation. Also, some sonic and subsonic ejectors with the function of changing nozzle position were manufactured precisely and tested for the comparison with the calculation results.

The solid rocket motor(SRM) consists of a motor case, igniter, propellants, nozzle, insulation, controller, and driving device. The liquid rocket propulsion systems(LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. The nozzle of SRM is high temperature condition and high velocity condition so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. This erosion occurs the change of nozzle throat and reduces thrust performance of rocket. The material of Rocket nozzle is minimization of erosion and insulation effect and endure the shear force, high temperature and high pressure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the erosion characteristics of solid rocket nozzles by each combustion time. Through the structure inspection of Graphite and C-C composite, identify the characteristics of the microstructure before and after erosion.

This paper shows numerical results for the estimation of the propulsor efficiency of Pre-Swirl Duct for 176k bulk carrier as well as its design method. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved and the k-epsilon model applied for the turbulent closure. The propeller rotating motion is determined using a sliding mesh technique. The design process is divided into each part of Pre-Swirl Duct, duct and Pre-Swirl Stator. The design of duct was performed first because it is located further upstream than Pre-Swirl Stator. The distribution of velocity through the duct was analyzed and applied for the design of Pre-Swirl Stator. The design variables of duct include duct angle, diameter, and chord length. Diameter, chord length, equivalent angle are considered when designing the Pre-Swirl Stator. Furthermore, a variable pitch angle stator is applied for the final model of Pre-Swirl Duct. The largest reduction rate of the delivered power in model scale is 7.6%. Streamlines, axial and tangential velocities under the condition that the Pre-Swirl Duct is installed were reviewed to verify its performance.
