  • The turbine exhaust system consists of a turbine flange, heat exchanger, exhaust duct and thrust nozzle. Heat exchanger is used for the launch vehicle because of the advantage of reducing the weight of the helium gas and the storage tank by using the heat exchanger pressurization method compared to the cold gas pressurizing method. Since the gas generator is combusted in fuel-rich condition, the soot is contained in the combustion gas. Hence, the heat exchanger should be designed considering the reduction of the heat exchange efficiency due to the soot effect. In addition, the uncertainty of the heat exchange calculation and the evaluation of the influence of the combustion gas soot on the heat exchange can not be completely calculated, so the design requirements must include a structure that can guarantee and control the temperature of the heat exchanger outlet. In this paper, it is described that the component allocation, the design method considering the manufacture of internal structure, the advantages of new concept of nozzle design.

  • High speed under water vehicle by using solid rocket motor, which is a natural cavitation type, was tested. The vehicle's speed and running distance was measured, and pressure sensors installed on the surface of the vehicle show pressure-time history of pressures according to the development of the supercavitation. Underwater cameras installed on the wall of the test pool recorded whole processes from the onset of the supercavitation to fully developed one. CNU-SuperCT based on 2-dimensional inviscid theoretical analysis was used to simulate the test result. In consideration of CNU-SuperCT does not include the control fins of the vehicle, simulation results agree with test results very well. Also, pictures from underwater cameras support the test results.

  • The easiest way to see the phenomena of compressor surge is to show the static and dynamic operation characteristic on the map. Its operation zone will be restricted by the surge limit and, static and transient process must have some margin for it. Effect of rotor moment of inertia, air/gas volumes and heat transfer are factors to cause the transition from the static line. In case a large volume such as heat exchanger exists in the system it will exert a substantial influence to dynamic characteristics. In the present paper, influence of air volume bled from the compressor exit on transient process is investigated with an example of an auxiliary power unit micro-turbine engine. Turbine mass, pressure ratio, rotation speed, power and moment are calculated based on mass and work conservation. Result from the present study can give guidance to design the control system. A computer program is developed to calculate the dynamic process using the MathCAD commercial software.

  • Korean Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV-II) Propellant Supply System charges liquid oxygen and kerosene to each propellant tank for the stages. To charge the launch vehicle propellant tank safety, the propellant charge flow rates and scenarios should be defined. First, the Propellant Supply System was modeled with 1D flow analysis program. The control valve capacity and orifice size were calculated by performing the 1D steady state simulation. Second, the 1D transient simulation was performed by using the steady state simulation results. As propellants were being charged at the each tank, the increased tank liquid level decreases the charge flow rate. Consequently, the proposed supply system satisfies the required design charging conditions.

  • Efficient designing of SRM Grains in the field of Rocketry is still the main test for most of the nations of world for scientific studies, commercial and military applications. There is a strong need to enhance thrust, improve the effectiveness of SRM and reduce mass of motor and burning time so as to allow the general design to increase the weight of payload/on board electronics. Moreover burning time can be increased while keeping the weight of the propellant and thrust in desired range, so as to give the time to control / general design group in active phase for incorporating delayed cut off if required. A mathematical design, optimization & analysis technique for Slotted Tube Grain has been discussed in this paper. In order to avoid the uncertainties that whether the Slotted Tube grain configuration being designed is best suited for achieving the set design goals and optimal of all the available designs or not, an efficient technique for designing SRM Grain and then getting optimal solution is must. The research work proposed herein addresses and emphasizes a design methodology to design and optimize Slotted Tube Grain considering particular test cases for which the design objectives and constraints have been given. In depth study of the optimized solution have been conducted thereby affects of all the independent parametric design variables on optimal solution & design objectives have been examined and analyzed in detail. In doing so, the design objectives and constraints have been set, geometric parameters of slotted tube grain have been identified, performance prediction parameters have been calculated, thereafter preliminary designs completed and finally optimal design reached. A Software has been developed in MATLAB for designing and optimization of Slotted Tube grains.

  • Asymmetric tip clearance in an axial compressor induces pressure and velocity redistributions along the circumferential direction in an axial compressor. This paper presents the mechanism of the flow redistribution due to the asymmetric tip clearance with a simple numerical modeling. The flow field of a rotor of an axial compressor is predicted when an asymmetric tip clearance occurs along the circumferential direction. The modeling results are supported by CFD results not only to validate the present modeling but also to investigate more detailed flow fields. Asymmetric tip clearance makes local flow area and resultant axial velocity vary along the circumferential direction. This flow redistribution 'seed' results in a different flow patterns according to the flow coefficient. Flow field redistribution patterns are largely dependent on the local tip clearance performance at low flow coefficients. However, the contribution of the main flow region becomes dominant while the tip clearance effect becomes weak as the flow coefficient increases. The flow field redistribution pattern becomes noticeably strong if a blockage effect is involved when the flow coefficient increases. The relative flow angle at the small clearance region decreases which result in a negative incidence angle at the high flow coefficient. It causes a recirculation region at the blade pressure surface which results in the flow blockage. It promotes the strength of the flow field redistribution at the rotor outlet. These flow pattern changes have an effect on the blade loading perturbations. The integration of blade loading perturbation from control volume analysis of the circumferential momentum leads to well-known Alford's force. Alford's force is always negative when the flow blockage effects are excluded. However when the flow blockage effect is incorporated into the modeling, main flow effects on the flow redistribution is also reflected on the Alford's force at the high flow coefficient. Alford's force steeply increases as the flow coefficient increases, because of the tip leakage suppression and strong flow redistribution. The predicted results are well agreed to CFD results by Kang and Kang(2006).

  • To eliminate the onset of combustion instabilities and develop effective approaches for control, flame structure is very important. In this study, we conducted experiments under various operating conditions with a model gas turbine combustor to examine the relation of combustion instability and flame structure by OH chemiluminescence and laser diagnostics of He-Ne laser absorbtion system. The swirling LNG(CH4)/air flame was investigated with overall equivalence ratio of 1.2 and dump plane fuel-air mixture velocity 25 ~ 70 m/s. We founded that the combustion instability phenomenon occurs at lower mixing velocity and higher mixing velocity conditions. We also concluded that fluid dynamical vortex frequency has major effects on the combustion instability characteristics at lower mixing velocity condition.

  • Fuel shutoff valve of a gas generator controls propellant mass flowrate of a rocket engine, by using pilot pressure and spring force. The developing fuel shutoff valve can be self sustained even though pilot pressure is removed in an actuator. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics of the forces with respect to the opening and closing of the valve in order to evaluate its performance. In light of this, the valve has been designed to adjust the control pressure for the opening of the poppet and to determine the working fluid pressure at which the valve starts to close. This paper also has been designed dynamic model using the AMESim and predicted flow coefficient of the valve by Fluent CFD analysis. Various results from the prediction and the analysis have been compared with experiments. Finally, dynamic characteristics of the valve have been verified with experimental results.

  • To guarantee the exact control of missile warhead, it is inevitable to ensure the stabilities in the view points of structural and fluid/thermo dynamics of the rocket motor. Specially, despite of shortness in operating time of the rocket motor which is initial turning type of missile, it occurs frequently some problems of ablation at the neighborhood of the nozzle throat, with the result that the system itself gets to failure. In these connections, in the present study, the effect of the operating time of a rocket motor on the coefficient of convective heat transfer at the nozzle wall is investigated by numerical analysis. As a result, it is turned out that the heat transfer coefficient is largest at the just ahead of nozzle throat and decreases with the increase of operating time of the rocket motor. Furthermore, we found that the radius of curvature of throat becomes smaller, the maximum coefficient of convective heat transfer becomes larger.
