  • The thrust Control in Solid Propellant Rocket is incomparably limited than that in Liquid Propellant Rocket. Because it is fixed that section to relate a combustion, that is a natural result. The control of a thrust directions in a Solid Propellant Rocket is not efficient for the purpose of a Solid Propellant Rocket. But it is a problem to solve that a weight on board should increase through the maximization of the thrust in a Solid Propellant Rocket.

  • A computational investigation has been carried out to study the heat transfer characteristics of jet vane assembly used for the thrust vector control(TVC) of a vertical launch motor. In this study, the coefficients of convective heat transfer on the jet vane are calculated using the solutions of thermal boundary-layer equation and several semi-empirical equations. The calculation of 3-dimensional temperature distribution for the jet vane assembly was performed using the softwares called PATRAN and ABAQUS. The accuracy of the present numerical method is verified by comparing with the measured and calculated temperatures within jet vane shaft. The temporal variation of jet vane temperatures for three deflection angles(0o, 12.5o, 25o) was discussed.

  • Dual throat nozzle(DTN) is recently attracting much attention as a new concept of the thrust vectoring technique. This DTN is designed with two throats, an upstream minimum and a downstream minimum at the nozzle exit, with a cavity in between the upstream throat and exit. In the present study, a computational work has been carried out to analyze the performance of a dual throat nozzle(DTN) at various mass flow rate of secondary flow and nozzle pressure ratios(NPR). Two-dimensional, steady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The present computational results were validated with some experimental data available. Based upon the present results, The control effectiveness of thrust-vector is discussed in terms of the thrust coefficient and the discharge coefficient.

  • Numerical computations were carried out to analyze the effect of a sub-cavity at several inlet Mach numbers on the control of cavity-induced pressure oscillations in two-dimensional supersonic flow. The present passive control method, the sub-cavity applied to the front wall of a square cavity, was studied for the inlet Mach numbers of 1.50, 1.83 and 2.50. The results show that the sub-cavity is effective in reducing the oscillations, and a resultant amount of the reduction depended on the inlet Mach number, the length of flat plate, and the depth of sub-cavity used as an oscillation suppressor.

  • Flexible behaviors in new aerospace structures can lead to a degradation of their control and guidance system and undesired performance. The objectives of the current work are to analyze the vibration resulting from the propulsion force on a Single Stage to Orbit (SSTO) launch vehicle (LV). This is modeled as a follower force on a free-free Euler-Bernoulli beam consisting of two concentrated masses at the two free ends. Once the effects on the oscillation of the actuators are studied, a solution to reduce these oscillations will also be developed. To pursue this goal, the stability of the beam model is studied using Ritz method. It is determined that the transverse and rotary inertia of the concentrated masses cause a change in the critical follower force. A new dynamic model and an adaptive control system for an SSTO LV have been developed that allow the aerospace structure to run on its maximum bearable propulsion force with the optimum effects on the oscillation of its actuators. Simulation results show that such a control model provides an effective way to reduce the undesirable oscillations of the actuators.

  • In this paper, we analyze the current submarine cooling system and study control algorithms for cooling system. Cooling system are installed in the submarine propulsion motor to protect the motor from high-temperature by iron loss and copper loss. The cooling system control the sea water and fresh water pump RPM to keep the motor temperature stable by external environment and motor RPM holding time. The cooling system simulation program is made for checking the cooling performance, and simulation is performed with various control strategy. The results with proposed cooling algorithm is shown to improve the thermal stability and efficiency of cooling system.

  • The various hazards should be eliminated before operations for the successful launches or tests. Using the contaminated propellants is one of the causes for the launch and test failures. Especially, the systems using liquid oxygen as an oxidizer have risks about fires and explosions not be forecasted if they are contaminated by oil, water and mechanical impurities. The procedure for the quality control of the liquid oxygen and the liquid oxygen filling system and the lessons learned from the first launch preparation with the system are introduced on this paper.

  • The method of test for observing the combustion instability and controling the instability actively by using secondary injection of fuel through flame stabilizer was studied by constructing model combustor of supersonic engine. The frequency of combustion instability was detected by measuring the pressure of combustor using pressure sensor and by optical sensing of flame intensity. Electro-magnetic valve was adopted as actuator for active control and the characteristics of modulated fuel was studied by measured pressure of valve outlet and scattering signal of spray at secondary fuel injection.

  • In general, the performance of movable nozzle used for thrust vector control in solid rocket motor is estimated on the basis of the effective pivot of nozzle. However, it is nearly impossible to define the exact effective pivot by the mathematical model or experimental technique owing to pivot dynamics. In this paper, pivot dynamic properties were investigated by ADAMS simulation technique and trajectory of the exact effective pivot was modelled by the artificial neural network. Comparison of the proposed method was made with the virtual movable nozzle (computer simulation) to verify the method, and showed good agreement. Therefore, the proposed method will be applicable to predict the effective pivot of movable nozzle during bench or ground test.

  • For launcher applications, different from other applications, very high flow rate is required which can lead to supply pressure drop against required setting pressure. The supply pressure decrease is closely related to regulator characteristics. In this paper, supply pressure offset is investigated considering regulators as kinds of control systems. Pressure offset of self-operated regulator is analyzed with sensitive parameter defined as the ratio of valve travel to pressure offset. It is shown that pressure offset of self-operating regulator can be improved by incorporating proportional and integral controls and they can be materialized with pilot regulator systems.
