  • This paper describes a novel tip position sensor made of a triangularly shaped piezoelectric PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) film for a cantilever beam. Due to the boundary condition of the cantilever beam and the spatial sensitivity function of the sensor, the charge output of the sensor is proportional to the tip position of the beam. Experimental results with the PVDF sensor were compared with those using two commercially available position sensors: an inductive sensor and an accelerometer. The resonance frequencies of the test beam, measured using the PVDF sensor, matched well with those measured with the two commercial sensors and the PVDF sensor also showed good coherence over wide frequency range, whereas the inductive sensor became poor above a certain frequency.

  • The generation of the intermodulation noises in microwave isolators has been studied in relation to the characteristics of YIG ferrites designed for this application. We have investigated the influences of porosity and crystalline anisotropy related to the magnetic loss, which causes the generation of intermodulation signals. The power dependence of the intermodulation power level is stressed as the crystalline anisotropy decreases. These results are consistent with the nonlinear effects of a single normal mode before the excitation of the spin-waves. It also appears that this power level is proportional to the magnitude of dc bias magnetic field.

  • This study analyzes the turn-on and turn-off transients of a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) with high-switching frequency systems. In these systems, the voltage distortion becomes serious at the output terminal of a Vienna rectifier by the turn-off delay of the MOSFET. The current has low-order harmonics through this voltage distortion. This paper describes the transient of the turn-off that causes the voltage distortion. The algorithm for reducing the sixth harmonic using a proportional-resonance controller is proposed to improve the current distortion without complex calculation for compensation. The reduction of the current distortion by high-switching frequency is verified by experiment with the 2.5-kW prototype Vienna rectifier.

  • This paper proposed a new control strategy for voltage source inverter (VSI) of effective fifth and seventh harmonic reduction in the point of common coupling (PCC) in islanded microgrid under nonlinear load without any additional hardware devices. The non-linear load regularly causes such harmonic distortion, which harmfully affect the performance of other loads or other distributed generation (DG) sources connect to the PCC. In order to improve the quality of delivered output voltage, these harmonic must be rejected. The proposed control strategy is developed based on the current controller formed by resonant controller parallel with a proportional integral controller, which perform on the fundamental reference frame. The reference current is estimated based on the voltage harmonic and the injecting power. The simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the effectiveness of proposed control method.

  • A robust controller is designed based on feedback linearization and sliding mode control to damp sub-synchronous control interaction (SSCI) in doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind power plants (WPPs) interfaced with the grid. A feedback-linearized sliding mode controller (FLSMC) is developed for the rotor-side converter (RSC) through feedback linearization, design of the sliding mode controller, and parameter tuning with the use of particle swarm optimization. A series-compensated 100-MW DFIG WPP is adopted in simulation to evaluate the effectiveness of the designed FLSMC at different compensation degrees and wind speeds. The performance of the designed controller in damping SSCI is compared with proportional-integral controller and conventional sub-synchronous resonance damping controller. Besides the better damping capability, the proposed FLSMC enhances robustness of the system under parameter variations.

  • The improvement of luminance and luminous efficiency is the one of the most important part in AC-PDPs. To achieve high luminance and luminous efficiency, high VUV emission efficiency is needed. We measured the emission spectra of vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) and infrared(IR) rays in surface discharge AC-PDP with Ne-Xe mixture gas. The influence of Ne-Xe gas-mixture ratio on resonance state $Xe^{\ast}(3P_{1})$ and exited state $Xe^{\ast}(3P_{2})$ has been investigated. It is found that the intensity of VUV 147nm emission is proportional to that of the IR 828 nm emission, and the VUV 173nm emission is roughly proportional to that of the IR 823nm emission. The electron temperature and plasma density have been experimentally measured from the center of sustaining electrode gap by a micro Langmuir probe in AC-PDPs. The plasma density from the center of sustaining electrode gap are shown to be maximum value of $9{\times}10^{11}cm^{-3}$, where the electron temperature is about 1.6 eV in this experiment

  • Grid-connected inverters (GCIs) with an LCL output filter have the ability of attenuating high-frequency (HF) switching ripples. However, by using only grid-current control, the system is prone to resonances if it is not properly damped, and the current distortion is amplified significantly under highly distorted grid conditions. This paper proposes a synchronous reference frame equivalent proportional-integral (SRF-EPI) controller in the αβ stationary frame using the parallel virtual resistance-based active damping (PVR-AD) strategy for grid-interfaced distributed generation (DG) systems to suppress LCL resonance. Although both a proportional-resonant (PR) controller in the αβ stationary frame and a PI controller in the dq synchronous frame achieve zero steady-state error, the amplitude- and phase-frequency characteristics differ greatly from each other except for the reference tracking at the fundamental frequency. Therefore, an accurate SRF-EPI controller in the αβ stationary frame is established to achieve precise tracking accuracy. Moreover, the robustness, the harmonic rejection capability, and the influence of the control delay are investigated by the Nyquist stability criterion when the PVR-based AD method is adopted. Furthermore, grid voltage feed-forward and multiple PR controllers are integrated into the current loop to mitigate the current distortion introduced by the grid background distortion. In addition, the parameters design guidelines are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Finally, simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the feasibility of the proposed control approach.

  • The purpose of this study is to observe the heat transfer process in in-vivo human muscle based on Proton Resonance Frequency(PRF) method in Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI). MRI was obtained to measure the temperature variation according to the heat transfer in phantom and in-vivo human calf muscle. A phantom(2% agarose gel) was used in this experiment. MR temperature measurement was compared with the direct temperature measurement using a T-type thermocouple. After heating agarose gel to more than 5$0^{\circ}C$ in boiling hot water, raw data were acquired every 3 minutes during one hour cooling period for a phantom case. For human study heat was forced to deliver into volunteer's calf muscle using hot pack. Reference data were once acquired before a hot pack emits heat and raw data were acquired every 2 minutes during 30minutes. Acquired raw data were reconstructed to phase-difference images with reference image to observe the temperature change. Phase-difference of the phantom was linearly proportional to the temperature change in the range of 34.2$^{\circ}C$ and 50.2$^{\circ}C$. Temperature resolution was 0.0457 radian /$^{\circ}C$(0.0038 ppm/$^{\circ}C$) in phantom case. In vivo-case, mean phase-difference in near region from the hot pack is smaller than that in far region. Different temperature distribution was observed in proportion to a distance from heat source.
