  • NCO terminated polyurethane prepolymers were synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), poly(tetramethyleneglycol)(PTMG) and dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA). Subsequently, aminosilane terminated prepolymers were prepared by capping the NCO groups of polyurethane prepolymers with different moles of aminopropyl triethoxysilane(0~0.02 mole) as a coupling agent. The average particle size of the silylated polyurethane solutions increased with increasing APS content. Also, the prepared coating films showed better thermal stability and pencil hardness than pure waterborne polyurethane.

  • Antibiotics KG-431A and KG-431B were isolated from the fermentation broth of the Clostridium sp. KH-431. As we have shown previously, only KG-431B was successful to recrystallize. These antibiotics showed antimicrobial activities against broad spectrum of bacteria and fungi. KG-431B also showed anticancer activity against some animal tumor cells according to the SRB method. Physico-chemical properties of KG-431B were determined using UV, IR, NMR and Mass spectra. It was identified to be 3-Indole propionic acid and the structure of the KG-431A is currently under investigation.

  • In this study, waterborne polyurethane was synthesized with polyester polyol, poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate ($H_{12}MDI$) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) to improve the water resistance. The properties of the synthesized waterborne polyurethane using poly(propylene carbonate) (WPUP) was evaluated through FT-IR, GPC, DSC and UTM. The mechanical properties were increased with the increase in the amount of PPC. When the ratio of polyester polyol to poly(propylene carbonate) is 9:1, the highest water resistance was showed.

  • Perstractive fermentation is a good way to increase the productivity of bioreactors. Us-ing Propionibacteria as the model system, the feasibility of using supported emulsion liquid mem-brane(SELM) fro perstractive fermentation is assessed in this study. Five industrial solvents were considered as the solvent for perparing the SELM. The more polar a solvent, is the higher the par-tition coefficeint However, toxicity of a solvent also increases with its polarity. CO-1055(indus-trial decanol/octanol blend)has the highest partition coefficient toward propionic acid among the solvents that has no molecular toxicity toward Propionibacteria, A preliminary extraction study was conducted using tetradecane as solvent in a hydrophobic hollow fiber contactor. The results confirmed that SELM eliminates the equilibrium limitation of conventional liquid-liquid extrac-tion and allows the use of a non-toxic solvent with low partition coefficient.

  • 1-Amino-5,6-dimethoxyindan hydrochloride was synthesized from 3- (3,4-dirnethoxyphenyl)propionic acid by intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation, oximation with hydroxylamine, and reduction with an overall yield of 74%. 2-Amino-5,6-dimethoxyindan hydrochloride was synthesized from 3-(3,4-dirnethoxyphenyl)propionic acid by intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation, oximation with isoamylnitrite, reduction in NaOH and reaction with HCI to form 5,6-dimethoxy-2-indanone, which was reacted with hydroxylamine and reduced with an overall yield of 42%. 5,6-Dimethoxyindan-1,2-dione-2-oxime, which was catalytically hydrogenated to afford cis-, and trans-1-amino-5,6-dimethoxyindan-1-ol as 3 : 1 ratio. This mixture was treated with Li and reacted with chloroacetyl chloride. Cis isomer was acylated and cyclized to synthesize rir -( ${\pm}$ )-7,8-dimethoxy-4,4a,5,9b-tetrahydroindeno[1,2-b][1,4]oxazin-3(2H)-one, but trans isomer was just acylated to form amide.

  • Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of germanium biotite (GB) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and fecal gas emission in pigs. In Exp 1., a total of one hundred nursery pigs (initial body weight 13.12${\pm}$0.15kg) were used in a 21 d growth assay. The five treatments were control (CON, basal diet), GB0.5-200 (basal diet + 0.5% GB, 200mesh), GB1.0-200 (basal diet + 1.0% GB, 200mesh), GB0.5-325 (basal diet + 0.5% GB, 325mesh), GB1.0-325 (basal diet + 1.0% GB, 325mesh). Each treatment had four replicates with five pigs per replicate. ADG, ADFI and gain/feed were not significantly different among the treatments. Fecal NH3-N concentration of pigs fed the GB325 diet was lower than that of pigs fed the GB200 diet (P=0.01). The GB treatments reduced fecal volatile fatty acids significantly compared to the CON (propionic acid, P=0.01; butyric acid, P=0.01; acetic acid, P=0.02). Especially, fecal propionic acid concentration of pigs fed the GB325 diets was lower than that of pigs fed the GB200 diets (P=0.02). In Exp 2., a total of seventy five pigs (initial body weight 21.18${\pm}$0.15kg) were used in a 28 d growth assay. The treatments were same as described for Exp. 1. Each treatment had five replicates with three pigs per replicate. The GB1.0 treatments significantly increased the ADG compared to the GB0.5 treatments (P=0.03). The DM and N digestibility of pigs fed the GB1.0 diets were higher than that for pigs fed the GB0.5 diets (P=0.01). Also, the Ca digestibility of pigs fed the GB diets was higher than that for pigs fed the CON diets (P=0.01). The fecal NH3-N concentrations for the GB treatments were lower than that for the CON (P=0.01). The GB325 treatments significantly decreased the fecal NH3-N concentration compared to the GB200 treatments (P=0.03). The fecal butyric acid concentration for the GB325 treatments was lower than that for the GB200 treatment (P=0.04). In conclusion, the results obtained from these feeding trials suggest that the dietary GB for nursery pigs affects fecal noxious gas emission. In growing pigs, dietary GB was effective to improve ADG and decrease fecal noxious gas emission.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding monensin on the growth performance and ruminal fermentation characteristics of Han-Woo cattle. Seventy two uncastrated Han-Woo male cattle(BW 267 kg) were randomly allotted to 0, 22, and 33 ppm monensin treatments, three replicates per treatment and eight heads per replicate. Animals were kept in an open barn for an 140-d feeding trial, Concentrates containing different levels of monensin and rice straw cut in 15cm length were fed ad libitum separately. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows. 1. No significant difference was found in daily gain by monensin feeding. 2. Monensin did not affect the total feed (concentrate + roughage) intake: however, as the monensin level increased, the total feed intake tended to decrease, resulting in 5 % reduction in 33 ppm monensin treatment. 3. Although no significant difference was found among three treatments, 22 and 33 ppm monensin improved the feed efficiency(total feed/gain) by 5.2 % and 5.1 %, respectively, as compared to the 0 ppm monensin treatment. 4. Monensin did not affect the concentrations of ruminal total VFA and acetic acid consistently. Although not significant, monensin feeding of 22 and 33 ppm caused marked increase in ruminal propionic acid concentration, 13.8 % and 19.3 %, respectively. Ruminal butyric acid concentration decreased as monensin level increased. Monensin feeding, regardless of level, decreased the A/P ratio by 12.5 %. In conclusiuon, monensin feeding increased the propionic acid concentration, and decreased the butyric acid concentration and A/P ratio in the rumen. Animals fed monensin consumed less feed, causing the improvement in feed efficiency. Thus, monensin appeared to be a useful feed additive, directing the rumen fermentation in a more productive way. Feed efficiency improved similarly both in 22 and 33 ppm monensin treatments, indicating that 22 ppm might be good enough rather than the 33 ppm monensin level.

  • Growth inhibition of Compylobacter jejuni ATCC 33291 was observed in the presence of various preservatives at various temperatures. The addition of ethanol (0.5% to 5%), hydrogen peroxide (0.05%), acetic acid (1%), propionic acid, benzoic acid, and sorbic acid showed strong antibacterial activities against C. jejuni at pH 5.5 or 6.5. The addition of 1% acetic acid and lactic acid were most effective at $42{\circ}C, followed by $25{\circ}C$ and $4{\circ}C$. This indicated that the inhibitory effect was temperature dependent. In the chicken model system, the practical death rate of C. jejuni in the FBP-media with 1% acetic temperatures ($4{\circ}$C$, $25{\circ}$C, and $42{\circ}$). Therefore, precaution has to be taken in the use of organic acids as a disinfectant in the chicken slaughterhouse.
