Carnivorous plants vary in their unique features of morphology, ultrastructure and biochemical properties by species. Furthermore, prey-capturing mechanism as well as structural and physiological adaptations have been used for grouping various carnivorous species. In Drosera plants, glandular trichomes, which develop in the leaf epidermis, are known to play the most important role during the prey capturing process. The present study examined such trichomes, focusing on the glandular type, in leaves of Drosera anglica using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Three types of rudimentary glandular trichomes were found to develop within the folded leaf primordia and immature leaf during early development. The first type, stalked glandular trichomes (Type I), occurred on the margin and upper epidermis of the leaf. With maturation, the longest glandular trichomes having lengthy stalks, ca. $2.2{\sim}5.1\;mm$, developed along the margin, while shorter stalked trichomes, ca. up to $200\;{\mu}m$, were found on the inner leaf blade. The shorter ones consisted of a globose head having two layers of secretory cells, parenchyma bell cells and tracheids and a multicellular stalk. The stalks gradually decreased in length in centripetal fashion. The second type, Type II, having ca. $15{\sim}30\;{\mu}m$ short stalks, also developed along the inner blade. Both types secreted mucilage from the secretory cells which had a thin cell wall and cuticle layer. The sessile six-celled glandular trichomes were the third type, Type III, and were $25{\sim}40\;{\mu}m$ in length. They were distributed most commonly throughout the upper and lower epidermis, petiole and even on the stalk surfaces of the first two types of trichomes. The third type was also found to be involved in the active secretion. In prey capturing leaves, all trichome types secreted substances through thin cuticles in the head cell wall, which exhibited relatively loose wall components.
This study evaluated the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of vanilla ice cream treated with gamma irradiation. The general composition of the vanilla ice cream used for the study was 45.4-53.3% moisture, 5.5-5.9% fat and 3.9-4.1% protein, and these values did not change following gamma irradiation. The Hunter L, a and b values were slightly decreased following gamma irradiation. The fatty acid composition of the ice cream included caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid, and there was no detectable change following irradiation. There was no significant difference in TBARS (2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) values between non-irradiated and irradiated samples at a dose of 3 kGy or less (p<0.05). Sensory evaluation indicated that gamma-irradiated vanilla ice cream did not show any difference in color relative to non-irradiated ice cream. However, gamma irradiation did affect the flavor, taste and overall acceptability of ice cream at doses above 3 kGy. These results indicate that gamma irradiation at 3 kGy is an effective treatment for sustaining the physicochemical characteristics of vanilla ice cream with minimal changes in sensory characteristics, though further studies should be carried out to reduce the deterioration of sensory qualities induced by gamma irradiation.
This study was conducted to investigate changes in the physicochemical properties (proximate compounds, reducing sugar, organic acid, ATP and related compounds, and free amino acid) of beachu kimchi (BK) with octopus, abalone, squid and webfoot octopus added during its storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 35 days. The crude protein content of the seafood Kimchi, 1.98~3.41%, was higher than that of the BK. The organic acid level did not significantly differ in the four kinds of seafood during their fermentation, and their malate and succinate contents decreased while their lactate content increased. The levels of the ATP and related compound substances of the hypoxanthine contents were high but decreased during their fermentation. However, $3.40{\mu}mol/g$ of IMP was detected in the Kimchi with octopus added; $0.67{\mu}mol/g$ in the Kimchi with abalone added; and $1.80{\mu}mol/g$ in the Kimchi with squid added after they were fermented for 21 days, but the same were not detected in the BK. The taurine and ${\gamma}$-amino-n-butyric acid contents of the free amino acids in the seafood Kimchi were approximately two to 10 times and 1.5 to three times higher than in the BK, respectively.
In this study, various physiological and biochemical experiments were conducted to know whether the selectivity between rice and barnyardgrass treated with bleaching herbicides containing diphenyl ether compounds was also partly based on their basic physiological proterties such as peroxidation ability, membrane stability or antioxidant system. It seemed to be partly based on the differences of their physiological characteristics that barnyardgrass was commonly more susceptible to most of the bleaching herbicides than rice. The scenescence of intact leaf segment was more rapid in barnyardgrass than in rice, indicating that barnyardgrass is weak at early stage. Also pigment metabolic ability, antioxidant enzyme activities(peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase) and antioxidant content (tocopherol, ascorbic acid, glutathione, carotenoids) were lower in barnyardgrass on the basic of fresh weight. However, lipoxygenase activity and the content of unsaturated fatty acid which is vulnerable to oxygen radicals were higher in barnyardgrass, suggesting that barnyardgrass seedling bave a properties easy to be peroxidized. The differences of PPIX (protoporphyrin IX) or carotenoid content, which are the primary substances inducing herbicide activity, were not related to the selectivity between rice and barnyardgrass.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of natural antioxidants as stabilizers for meat by-products to prevent lipid oxidation. The white internal organs were evaluated using different treatments: no antioxidant (control), ascorbic acid (T1), Artemisiacapillaris Thunb. (T2), Opuntia (T3), Schisandra chinensis (T4), and Saururuschinensis (Lour.) Baill (T5). Antioxidant activities were analyzed by measuring DPPH contents, superoxide anion radical levels, nitrate scavenging activities, and total polyphenol contents. T1 and T2 showed higher antioxidant activities and total polyphenol contents (p<0.05). Additionally, changes in physicochemical properties (pH, color, volatile basic nitrogen [VBN], and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances [TBARS]) and microbiological aspects in white internal organs processed with antioxidants were investigated. As storage time increased, the CIE $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of the white internal organs processed with natural antioxidants were decreased (p<0.05), and CIE $L^*$ values were low, particularly for the T3 sample relative to that in the control. Moreover, the pH, VBN, and TBARS values of samples T2-T5 were increased after 7 days of storage, but showed low values compared with those of the control (p<0.05). Moreover, compared with the control group, the treatments showed antimicrobial effects. Our results indicated that these natural antioxidants could be used as lipid oxidation stabilizers of meat by-products during storage and that Artemisiacapillaris Thunb. and Opuntia may have applications as natural antioxidants in the meat by-product industry.

This study was carried out to analyze the physicochemical properties of bovine milks, which were heated with LTLT, HTST, UHT pasteurization and UHT sterilization methods and to compare the heat intensity among the heating methods and samples. The mean HMF values per liter milk were measured as 0.66~1.62 $\mu$M (LTLT), 0.9~1.78$\mu$M (HTST), 3.53$\mu$M(UHT pasteurized) and 7.43~8.97$\mu$M (UHT sterilized) in samples, re- sportively. The available Iysine contents per 100ml milk showed 293.2 mg (Raw), 289.2~291.2 mg (LTLT), 298.4~292.4mg (HTST), 272.4~261.6mg (UHT pasteurized) and 279.0mg (UHT sterilized), respectively. The rates of whey protein denaturation were 9.5~11.4% (LTLT), 9.5~17.1% (HTST), 89.3~95% (UHT pas-tsterilized) and 62.7% (UHT sterilized), respectively. The contents of SH groups per g protein were determined as 2.86$\mu$M (Raw) and 2.95~3.15$\mu$M (LTLT), 3.08~3.18$\mu$M (HTST), 3.26~3.42$\mu$M (UHT Pasteurized) and 3. 36$\mu$M (UHT sterilized), respectively, The SS groups Contents per g protein were 28.93$\mu$M (Raw), 25.72~26. 51 $\mu$M (LTLT), 26.93~26.79$\mu$M (HTST), 23.65~23.04 $\mu$M (UHT pasteurized) and 24.69$\mu$M (UHT sterilized), respectively. The ascorbic acid contents per liter milk were measured 6.05mg (Raw), 1.47~1.65mg (LTLT), 2.50~3.85mg (HTST), 2.87~3.69mg (UHT pasteurized) and 4.50mg (UHT sterilized). The changes of some in-dices in milk samples depend on the heating temperature and time ; the HMF values, SH groups, whey protein denaturation rates increased, while the available lysine contents and SS groups decreased in LTLT, HTST, UHT pasteurized and UHT sterilized milks. No remarkable differences were found in heating indicators between LTLT and UHT milks.
Fluoxastrobin a fungicide developed from Strobilurus species mushroom extracts, can be used as an effective pesticide to control fungal diseases. In this study, we optimized the extraction and purification of fluoxastrobin according to its physical and chemical properties using the QuEChERS method and developed an LC-MS/MS-based analysis method. For extraction, we used acetonitrile as the extraction solvent, along with MgSO4 and PSA. The limit of quantitation of fluoxastrobin was 0.01 mg/kg. We used 0.01, 0.1, and 0.5 mg/kg of five representative agricultural products and treated them with fluoxastrobin. The coefficients of determination (R2) of fluoxastrobin and fluoxastrobin Z isomer were > 0.998. The average recovery rates of fluoxastrobin (n=5) and fluoxastrobin Z isomer were 75.5-100.3% and 75.0-103.9%, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were < 5.5% and < 4.3% for fluoxastrobin and fluoxastrobin Z isomer, respectively. We also performed an interlaboratory validation at Gwangju Regional Food and Drug Administration and compared the recovery rates and RSDs obtained for fluoxastrobin and fluoxastrobin Z isomer at the external lab with our results to validate our analysis method. In the external lab, the average recovery rates and RSDs of fluoxastrobin and fluoxastrobin Z isomer at each concentration were 79.5-100.5% and 78.8-104.7% and < 18.1% and < 10.2%, respectively. In all treatment groups, the concentrations were less than those described by the 'Codex Alimentarius Commission' and the 'Standard procedure for preparing test methods for food, etc.'. Therefore, fluoxastrobin is safe for use as a pesticide.
