  • Environmental control facilities are used to simulate an environment or combination of environments under which many kinds of research and tests can be performed. The design of the control system to maintain desired environmental conditions is essential to proper operation of the facility. A simulation model of the facility has been developed by analyzing each component of the system thermodynamically. with necessary properties and heat transfer relations. Using the system simulation model, the required characteristics of the control system has been investigated. PI controller is considered as the most probable controller for this kind of the facility, and electric heater power is shown as the proper manipulated variable for temperature control.

  • Urbanization results in increased runoff volume and peak flowrate and shortening in time of concentration, which may cause frequent flooding downstream. There are various types of flow retardation methods including detention ponds, retention ponds, and infiltration ponds. In general, hydrologic models to design the detention pond are classified into planning model and design model. This study is comparing and analyzing of planning model to design the detention pond in urban area. Detention ponds data of Disaster Impact Assessment Report on 22 sites were analyzed to investigate proper planning models in this study. From this research, following conclusions are derived, 1) In case of on-line detention pond, Lee model(1991) is the best planning model and similar to real storage volume. 2) In case of off-line detention pond, Abt and Grigg model is much more proper model compared to other models.

  • In government procurement programs, cost estimation and analysis support funding decisions and are the basis for other major decisions, too. Such estimating and analyzing the cost of the weapon systems are crucial in execution of the defense budget. However, existing cost estimations and analyses have focused on domestic R&D projects, thus those are not valid in application to foreign weapon acquisitions. This study aims at foreign weapon systems that are acquired from Direct Commercial Sales. Because the data for price estimation of a foreign weapon is usually not available, we suggest a price estimation model based on performance factors of the weapon. In this study, the proper price of the weapon system is estimated using the parametric cost estimating model. Using the data of helicopter-launched anti-tank guided missiles worldwide, we analyze the effect of each performance factor on the weapon system price by regression analysis, and use step-wise and ridge regression analysis to remove multi-collinearity. This study hopefully contributes to more reasonable decision making on proper price of weapons.

  • Every autonomous system like a robot needs a power source known as a battery. And proper management of the battery is very important for proper operation. To know State of Charge(SOC) of a battery is the very core of proper battery management. In this paper, the SOC estimation problem is tackled based on the well known Extended Kalman Filter(EKF). Combined the existing battery model is used and then EKF is employed to estimate the SOC. SOC table is constructed by extensive experiment under various conditions and used as a true SOC. To verify the estimation result, extensive experiment is performed with various loads. The comparison result shows the battery estimation problem can be well solved with the technique proposed in this paper. The result of this paper can be used to develop related autonomous system.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the ambulatory care facilities according to the change of medical circumstance and to find the proper ones in Korea. A logical model was used with the data which were obtained from the National Statistical Office, the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Korea and OECD Health Data. A proper ambulatory care facility in Korea is suggested as like as MOB (Medical Office Building). It should be considered for outpatient in distance within 1km long. It's proper size may be designed for 10,000persons to 50,000persons by regions.

  • Dynamic force microscopy utilizes the dynamic response of a resonating probe tip as it approaches and retracts from a sample to measure the topography and material properties of a nanostructure. We present recent ideas based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and detailed experiments that yield new perspectives and insight into AFM. A dynamic cantilever model with Lennrad-Jones interaction Potential which includes attractive and repulsive van der Waals demonstrates the resonable tapping mode response in time and frequency.

  • Fuel costs represent one of the most substantial expenses for airlines, accounting for 20% - 36% of the airline's total operating cost. The present study discusses the so-called discretionary fuel that is additionally loaded at the discretion of airlines to cover unforeseen variations from the planned flight operations. The proper range of the discretionary fuel to be loaded for economic flight operations was estimated by applying Monte Carlo simulation technique. With this simulation model for loading discretionary fuel, airlines cannot only reduce the total amount of fuel to be consumed but also minimize the risk of unplanned flight disruptions caused by insufficient fuel on board. Airlines should be able to guarantee proper risk management processes for fuel boarding by carrying enough fuel to high-risk airports. This study would provide a practical guideline for loading proper amounts of discretionary fuel. Future researchers should be encouraged to improve this study by elaborating the weather variable.

  • A multiple box model which is suitable for the prediction of water quality in shallow lakes with active mixing is a water quality model expected to be used widely in estuary reservoir. In this study, a multiple box water quality model for estuary reservoirs (MBQER) was developed arid the applicability of the MBQER was tested by applying data obtained from Asan-estuary reservoir. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The MBQER, dynamic water quality model, was developed to estimate 10-day water qualities of estuary reservoirs. For the proper analysis and the application of hydraulics needed to build a model, lake hydraulics was simplified by condisering only hydrological inflow and lake mixing currents. The box division in the MBQER is longitudinal one dimension for upper and middle part, and two layers for lower part of the reservoir. 2. The methods of box division for the multiple box model were ekamined and applied to Asan-estuary reservoir. For determining the number of boxes, Pe number and Pk number were used. In case of three boxes, the error by the model simplification would be estimated about 5 % Therefore, in Asan reservoir, the proper number of boxes was three. 3. The MBQER was calibrated and verified using measured data in Asan-estuary reservoir from 1986 to 1988. The Root Mean Squares(RMS) for the differences between measured data and simulated results by the MBQER were 1.10$^{\circ}$C C for water temperature, 75.8mg/1 for salinity, 0.082mg/1 for total-phosphorus showing good estimations. 4. Through the simulation of water temperature and salinity by the MBQER, the exchange flow and the mixing coefficients for the estuary lake were determined. As a result of simulation, the horizontal mixing coefficients in Asan-estuary reservoir were in the range of 1.07X 105 to 1.12X 105 cm$^2$/sec and vertical mixing coefficient was 2.90X 10-1 cm$^2$/sec.

  • PURPOSES : In Korea, over 70 percent of the land consists of mountainous and rolling area. Thus, tunnels continue its upward trend as road network are extended. In these circumstances, the importance of tunnel has been increased nowadays and then its safety investigation and research should be performed. This study is focus on confirming and improving the safety of tunnel. On tunnel hood, sunglare effect can irritate driver's behavior instantly and this can result in incident. METHODS : The study of this phenomenon is rarely conducted in domestic and foreign papers, so there is no proper measure for this. This study analyzes the driving environment of the effect of sunglare effect on tunnel hood. RESULTS : Traffic accidents stem from complex set of factors. This study build the Traffic Accident Prediction Models to find out the effect of sunglare effect on tunnel's hood. The independent variables are traffic volume, geometric design of road, length of tunnel and road side environment. Using these variables, this model estimates accident frequency on tunnel hood by Poisson regression model and Negative binomial regression model. Although Poisson regression model have more proper goodness of fit than Negative binomial regression model, Poisson regression model has overdipersion problem. So the Negative binomial regression model is used in this analysis. CONCLUSIONS : Consequently, the model shows that sunglare effect can play a role in driving safety on tunnel hood. As a result, the information of sunglare effect should be noticed ahead of tunnel hood so this can prevent drivers from being in hazard situation.
