  • In this paper, performance of DSRC systems is analyzed with considering the real roads and height of vehicles. The channels are modeled as 2-Ray and 4-Ray with a direct wave and reflected waves by a road and buildings in a physical layer because DSRC keeps LOS propagation characteristics, and the pass loss for each model is calculated respectively. Rician factor is obtained through the calculated path loss on two models for DSRC, and the performance of the systems is analyzed in AWGN and Rician fading channels, Impulsive noise and Rician fading channels respectively. As a result, in Rician fading channels with impulsive noise(A=0.2, ${\Gamma}^{\prime}=0.22$), BER is below $10^{-6}$ when the distance is farther than 80[m] and 40[m] in 2-Ray model and 4-Ray model respectively. For performance improvement, BCH coding scheme and MRC diversity scheme are adopted.

  • By using the radio propagation prediction of Rec. ITU-R P.1546, geographic information system, and S-I plane, we presented the methodology of interference analysis based on the minimum coupling loss, and also suggested the local coordinate system for calculating azimuth and elevation angles between the victim receiver and the interferer for an arbitrary antenna pattern. To check the presented algorithm, the map with the land-sea mixed area was taken for the given area of $80{\times}60[km^2]$ as real geography information. Field strength, path profile, and protection ratio with maximum allowable interference level have been illustrated for radar and fixed wireless system for the assumed frequency. In addition interference power of the victim receiver was calculated asa function of azimuth and elevation angles of the interferer. The developed methodology of interference analysis in the VHF and UHF bands can be actually applied to assess interoperability as well as compatibility in the civil or military applications.

  • Smart City, a key application area of the AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things), provides various services in safety, security, and healthcare sectors through location tracking and location-based services. an IPS (Indoor Positioning System) is required to implement location-based services, and wireless communication technologies such as WiFi, UWB (Ultra-wideband), and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) are being applied. BLE, which enables data transmission and reception with low power consumption, can be applied to various IoT devices such as sensors and beacons at a low cost, making it one of the most suitable wireless communication technologies for indoor positioning. BLE utilizes the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) to estimate the distance, but due to the influence of multipath fading, which causes variations in signal strength, it results in an error of several meters. In this paper, we conducted research on a path loss model that can be applied to BLE IPS for proximity services, and confirmed that optimizing the free space propagation loss coefficient can reduce the distance error between the Tx and Rx devices.

  • With the advance of wireless communication technology in terrestrial area, underwater communication is also evolving very fast from a simple point-to-point transmission to an elaborate networked communications. Underwater acoustic channel has quite different features comparing with the terrestrial radio channel in terms of propagation delay, Doppler shift, multipath, and path loss. Thus, existing technologies developed for terrestrial communication might not work properly in underwater channel. Especially medium access control (MAC) protocols which highly depend on propagation phenomenon should be newly designed for underwater network. CSMA/CA has drawn lots of attention as a candidate of underwater MAC protocol, since it is able to resolve a packet collision and the hidden node problem. However, a received signal could be degraded by the interferences from the nodes locating outside the receiver's propagation radius. In this paper, we study the effects of interference on the CSMA/CA based underwater network. We derived the SNR with the interference using the sonar equation and analyzed the degradation of the RTS/CTS effects. These results are compared with the terrestrial results to understand the differences. Finally we summarized the design considerations in CSMA/CA based underwater network.

  • Underwater wireless communication systems can be useful for underwater environment observation, catastrophe prevention, ocean resources exploration, ocean organism research, vessel sinking exploration, and so on. However, unlike terrestrial wireless communication, underwater wireless communication should consider factors such as long propagation delay, limited transmission capacity, high bit-error rate due to potential loss in power, ambient noise, man-made noise, multi-path, etc., because of the inherent characteristics of water. Thus, in this paper, we propose a suitable media access control(MAC) protocol that applies a combination of the ALOHA MAC protocol and the CSMA/CA MAC protocol to underwater environment. We further propose a mathematical analysis model to evaluate performance. We also verify performance improvement in the proposed scheme in comparison with existing MAC protocols.

  • This paper deals with the noise evaluation technique of a reciprocating air-compressor and its noise reduction. The reciprocating air-compressors are widely used in the small, medium sized industrial firms, and lots of their employees are affected and irritated by their noise in the workplace. Thus, noise control actions should be taken appropriately by considering the hearing loss due to the occupational noise exposure. Lead-wrapping techniques are employed to identify the contribution of principal noise sources which are generally known as motor, belts, suction/discharge valves, moving pistons, and flow-induced noise caused by edges or discontinuities along the flow path e.g. expansions, contractions, junctions and bends etc .. As a result, main noise sources of the air-compressor can be categorized by the suction/discharge noise, valve noise, and compressed-air tank noise. Based on the investigations, mufflers are designed to reduce both the suction/discharge noise and the compressed-air tank noise. Instead of the conventional valve plate, polyethylene resin is used as a new one for the reduction of valve impact noise. In addition, attempts are made to reduce the valve noise propagation to the cylinder head and the compressor tank by using the insulation casings. As a result of the countermeasure plans, it can be achieved that the noise reduction of the air-compress is up to 10dB.

  • The $2\times32$ coupler consists of Mach-Zehnder interferometer and Y branch coupler. For the designs of this coupler, three dimensional rectangular core waveguide decomposed to two-dimensional structure by the effective index method. To optimize the waveguide structure, the confinement factor was investigated with two-dimensional finite difference Beam Propagation Method. The $2\times32$ coupler fabricated by simulation with height between Mach-Zehnder arms, H=$43.6\mu\textrm{m}$(path difference $0.668\mu\textrm{m}$) was showed best characteristics. In the results of dry etching of core layer, the etching rate of core layer was above 2600${\AA}$/min, the etching ratio of SiO2 to Al mask was 30:1 and the uniformity of etching was $\pm$5%. The maximum insertion loss and the uniformity of $2\times32$ coupler were below 19.2dB, 2dB respectively.

  • In the context-aware services, localization is an important technical element. Due to the easy to use and low cost, it was widely enabled with RF properties such as RSSI. However, RSSI is known to be not appropriated for indoor localization, because it tends to show big variance in time and is greatly effected with the multipath. This paper proposes a distance estimation process and its constituted methods for indoor localization, by making use of the other WLAN's RF property, CSI(Channel State Information). Firstly we define a comprehensive localization process, and suggest a calibration algorithm of environment factors in the path loss propagation model. Then, by implementing them with a commercial WLAN module, an the proposed process and methods are evaluated in terms of usefulness.

  • Mobile WiMAX is an emerging technology that can provide ubiquitous Internet access. To provide seamless service in mobile WiMAX environment, delay or disruption in dealing with mobility must be minimized. However offering seamless services on IEEE 802.16e networks is very hard due to long handover latency both in layer 2 and 3. In this paper, we propose a fast cross-layer handover scheme based on prediction algorithm. With the help of the prediction, layer-3 handover activities are able to occur prior to layer-2 handover, and therefore, total handover latency can be reduced. The experiments conducted with system parameters and propagation model defined by WiMAX Forum demonstrate that the proposed method predicts the future signal level accurately and reduces the total handover latency.

  • In this paper, we designed axis-displaced Gregorian antenna by using Ray-tracing method. This antenna improves gain, VSWR by rotating the axis of the sub-reflector to get rid of E-field wave returned from sub-reflector to feed horn. Therefore it reduce the sub-reflector size and the volume of antenna. This method is used to track the propagation path for radiation pattern of feed horn from feed horn to sub-reflector, main-reflector and air. We get E-field distribution of this antenna aperture and calculate antenna radiation pattern and optimize the antenna performance. The Ray-tracing Method was verified because the gain, radiation patterns, side lobe level, beam width and return loss of the designed antenna are very similar to CST simulation result and a measured result of the fabricated antenna.
