It is well known that mechanisms of fracture and crack growth depend upon material characteristics such as fracture toughness, environmental condition, cracd geometry and mechanical properties. It seems to be very important to investihate the effects of the above factors on the behavior of structural components which contain flaws for the detailed evaluation of their intehrity. In this experimental research, fracture behaviors of moterials were investigated by using Acoustic Emission(AE) technique. The fracturing processes of materials were estimated through both the tension specimens. For the detrmlnatlon of yied strength or fracture toughness, the critical applied load at the crack initiation and propagation is thought to be very important. The critical applied load(PQ) was determined through AE signal. The source of AE signal was estimated by fractography analysis. These experimental results may contribute to the safety analyses and the evaluation of strength of structures.
The correlation between crack propagation and localized recrystallization are compared in a series of cross section analyses on thermal cycled edgebond and underfilm material applied wafer level chip scale package (WLCSP) components with a baseline of no-material applied WLCSP components. The results show that the crack propagation distribution and recrystallization region correlation can explain potential degradation mechanisms and support the damage accumulation history in a more efficient way. Edgebond material applied components show a shift of damage accumulation to a more localized region, thus potentially accelerated the degradation during thermal cycling. Underfilm material applied components triggered more solder joints for a more wider distribution of damage accumulation resulting in a slightly improved thermal cycling performance compared to no-material applied components. Using an analysis on localized distribution of recrystallized areas inside the solder joint showed potential value as a new analytical approach.
Typical magnetic bubble propagation failure modes of ion implanted magnetic bubble computer memory devices were observed and their failure mechanisms were analize. The skidding failure mode is due to the pushing of a strong repulsive charged wall. If this pushing is stronger than the edge affinity of the bubble in the cusp, the bubble moves out of the cusp when it is supposed to stay there. The stripeout failure modes across the adjacent track or along the track can be explained by considering the relative strength of the charged wall and the edge affinity encountered by both ends of the stripe. The skipping of the first cusp of a track is believed to be due to the whipping motion of the charged wall. The bubble moves directly to the second cusp via the long charged wall pointing to the second cusp skipping the first cusp.
Nearly fully dense PZT samples both with tetragonal and with morphotropic phase boundary compositions were prepared by the conventional powder processing and sintering. A micro-indentation technique was used to evaluate the dependence of fracture toughness on remanent polarization, crack length and the direction of crack propagation. The result shows that the toughness increases with the remanent polarization along the poling direction and decreases in the transverse direction. The dependence of toughness on the remanent polarization is neither symmetric nor linear but rather shown to be saturated quickly with the increase in remanent polariztion. R-curve behaviors are observed in both poled and unpoled samples. Sequential SEM and XRD studies on annealed, poled, ground, fractured and etched samples show that domain switching is evident as a viable toughening mechanism but might depend upon the rate of crack propagation. Grain bridging is also observed as one of the active toughening mechanisms.
This paper is a study on model method for estimating system inputs from vibration responses, which is one of indirect input identification methods in frequency domain. The method has advantages over direct inverse method especially when points of operational inputs are inaccessible so that artificial excitation forces cannot be applied to obtain frequency response functions of the complete system. Procedures of extended modal model method are proposed and checked by numerical experiment. Mechanisms of error propagation, i.e., how errors in modal parameters such as poles nad mode shape vectors affect estimation of the input forces, are illustrated. Then, in order to counteract the error propagation, discrete modal filter approach is taken in this paper to compute the inversion of modal matrix in which the most serious errors seem to be generated. Further, a Reduced form of Modified Reciprocal Modal Vector(RMRMV) is proposed for estimating multiple inputs. It is shown to have smaller orthogonality error than MRMV.
Spinning detonations propagating in a circular tube were numerically investigated with a one-step irreversible reaction model governed by Arrhenius kinetics. The time evolution of the simulation results was utilized to reveal the propagation mechanism of single-headed spinning detonation. The track angle of soot record on the tube wall was numerically reproduced with various levels of activation energy, and the simulated unique angle was the same as that of the previous reports. The maximum pressure histories of the shock front on the tube wall showed stable and unstable pitch modes for the lower and higher activation energies, respectively. The shock front shapes and the pressure profiles on the tube wall clarified the mechanisms of two modes. The maximum pressure history in the stable pitch remained nearly constant, and the single Mach leg existing on the shock front rotated at a constant speed. The high and low frequency pressure oscillations appeared in the unstable pitch due to the generation and decay of complex Mach interaction on the shock front shape. The high frequency oscillation was self-induced because the intensity of the transverse wave was changed during propagation in one cycle. The high frequency behavior was not always the same for each cycle, and therefore the low frequency oscillation was also induced in the pressure history.
Detonation propagation studies is recently getting more attention in these days for its feasibility in aerospace application. Another motivation for this study is the safety concern in industries, since the detonation can cause failure to the mechanical components particularly when the flame accelerates within a pipe or tubes. In this study we numerically simulated a Moderately unstable detonation case with various grid systems and fluid dynamic length scales and have compared in the contents. Moderately Unstable detonation case was selected for this study and detailed Hydrogen-Air Reaction Mechanisms proposed by Jachimowski was used in this study with N2 as inert species.
To reveal the newly found liftoff height behavior of hydrogen jet, we have experimentally studied the stabilization mechanism of turbulent, lifted jet flames in a non-premixed condition. The objectives of the present research are to report the phenomenon of a liftoff height decreasing as increasing fuel velocity, to analyse the flame structure and behavior of the lifted jet, and to explain the mechanisms of flame stability in hydrogen turbulent non-premixed jet flames. The velocity of hydrogen was varied from 100 to 300m/s and a coaxial air velocity was fixed at 16m/s with a coflow air less than 0.1m/s. For the simultaneous measurement of velocity field and reaction zone. PIV and OH PLIF technique was used with two Nd:Yag lasers and CCD cameras. As results, it has been found that the stabilization of lifted hydrogen diffusion flames is related with a turbulent intensity, which means that combustion occurs where the local flow velocity is valanced with the turbulent flame propagation velocity.
Wear and wear transition mechanisms during sliding as a function of time in Al2O3 have been studied to understand the wear behaviour of brittle ceramic materials. Commercial Si3N4 ball was rotated against flat Al2O3 specimens which were hot pressed and polished using upto 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diamond paste. Paraffin oil was used as a lubricant. Experimental data show that wear of Al2O3 is separated into distinct two stages, i.e., initial stage of slow wear and final stage of rapid wear. Microstructural observations at worn surface show that wear occurs through grooving and grain pull-out in the initial and final stage respectively. TEM observations beneath the worn surfaces show that grain pull-out starts to occur by the propagation of grain boundary cracks induced by dislocation pile-up throughthe surface.
