Two type pistons which had different configuration were made to find out the effects on combustion and flame propagation. Flame propagation speed was obtained by use of the cylinder head gasket ionization probe. Ionization Probe voltage output and flame propagation speed were increased according to the air fuel mixture ratio increase. Exhaust direction flame propagation speed was fastest in combustion chamber and next was front direction, rear direction and intake direction cause of tumbling motion in cylinder. In case of remove the valve pocket in piston, average flame propagation speed changed slowly and spark timing was advanced. Also emission was decreased.

This paper introduces the optimal disposition of direction finder using EM(Electro-magnetic) wave propagation analysis which is based on LR(Longley-Rice) propagation model and the characteristics of direction finder, emitter and terrain. Initial model is simulated and modified to minimize propagation error as a result of the field trials. Proposed analysis used line-of-sight analysis and mountain-top extraction algorithm to optimize the disposition in the assigned area and the result can be displayed in the 3D map in order of the percentage coverage for direction finding possibility area.

In this study, a method measuring signal propagation direction in human body was developed by using passive electrical properties of the body. The measured method of the signal propagation direction is to apply basic characteristic of electricity to the human body; when a voltage is set to a conducted medium, according to the polarity of the conducted voltage, the voltage rising or drop is generated. And using this concept, it is able to estimate the direction of electrical signal on the human body. The passive electrical properties were measured and the direction of signal propagation was estimated on the followings; between the flexor carpi radialis, between arms, between legs, between an arm and a leg, between the cervical vertebra and the upper limb, between the sacral vertebra and the leg, between the cervical vertebra and the tendon of triceps brachii, and between the sacral vertebra and the calcaneal tendon. As the result of experiments, the passive electrical properties were increased from l[Hz] to 50[kHz] of the inputted frequencies and showed at saturating tendency after that. And also, the estimated signal propagation directions using the developed method in this study agreed with the expected directions exactly at each part of the human body.

When piping system in a nuclear power plant is subjected to a beyond design seismic condition, it is important to accurately determine possibility of crack initiation and, if initiation occurs, its location and time. From recent experimental works on elbow pipes, it was found that the crack initiation location and crack propagation direction of the SA403 WP316 stainless steel elbow pipe were affected by the pipe thickness. In this paper, the crack initiation location and crack propagation direction for SA403 WP316 stainless steel elbow pipes with different thickness were analyzed via elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Based on FE results, the effect of the pipe thickness on different crack initiation location and crack propagation direction was analyzed using ovality, stress and strain components. It was also confirmed that the presence of internal pressure had no effect on the crack initiation location and crack propagation direction.

For the improvement of safety and endurance in welded steel structure, it is needed to consider welding residual stress distribution and rolling directional characteristics of materials. In this study, it was investigated experimentally about characteristics of fatigue crack propagation according to welding residual stress and rolling in FCAW(flux cored arc welding) butt-jointed steel plates. SS400 steel plates of 3mm thickness were selected and tested for this study. When the angles between tensile loading direction and rolling direction in welded materials are increased from $0^{\circ}\;to\;90^{\circ}$, their fatigue crack propagation rates are increased. These results are same as predicted increments of fatigue crack propagation rate when stress ratio is increased from 0 to 0.5. When the angles of rolling direction and welding direction to tensile loading direction are $0^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ respectively, fatigue crack propagation rate in welded material is lowest.

In this paper, the effect of wrinkling on the cut propagation direction of thin membrane was studied using geometrically nonlinear shell element post-buckling analysis. In the analysis, rectangular tensile membrane configuration with a slanted center cut was considered. The cut propagation direction was predicted by maximum energy release rate method, $K_{II}$-zero method, and maximum tangential stress method. The cut propagation angle and the $J$-integral values were calculated for the wrinkled and unwrinkled cases and the results were compared. Various initial cut orientation angles were considered and the effect on the propagation direction was studied. The cut propagation paths were also predicted by virtual cut extension approach.
In this paper, double exposure holographic interferometry using ruby pulse laser is formed in order to investigate the propagation of transient waves. The vibration characteristics according to the change of impact load direction, i.e., impacted in the shear direction and in the normal direction are analyzed. It was observed that the macroscopic trends of transient wave generation and propagation in the assembly of precipitator plates were almost similar regardless of the change of impact load direction. But the propagation and mixing of transient wave was advanced relatively slowly when impacted in the normal direction.

The elastic waves in the plate are dispersive waves with the characteristics of Lamb waves. However, $S_0$ symmetric mode is less dispersive in the frequency region less than first cut-off frequency. And, in anisotropic plates such as CFRP plates, the propagation velocities vary with the direction. So, the wave vector direction to be the phase velocity direction is not accord with the energy flow direction to be the group velocity direction. In this work, the group velocities of the $S_0$ symmetric mode less than the first cut-off frequency was analyzed with the group velocity dispersion curves in unidirectional CFRP plate. And, the group velocity curve obtained by the group velocity dispersion curves are compared with the measured velocities as varied the propagation direction of the Lamb wave. The measured velocities are good agreement with the corrected group velocity curve except near the fiber direction which is called the cusp region. When the propagation direction is not accorded with the principal axis, the direction of the group velocities declines to the fiber direction in the unidirectional CFRP plates. This implies that the energy propagates preferentially toward fiber direction.

Many researchers have studied woven fabric carbon-fiber-reinforced composite (CFRP) materials but the study of fatigue crack propagation in composites has been insufficient. It has known that the crack propagation behavior differs depending on the load and the fiber direction. In this study, the fatigue crack propagation along two different fiber array directions ($0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$) in plain woven CFRP composite was investigated. Fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted on the woven CFRP composite under a sinusoidal waveform load with stress ratios of 0.1 at a frequency of 10 Hz. Once the results of the tests were obtained, fatigue crack propagation rates (da/dN) were plotted against the energy release rate amplitude (${\Delta}G$), and it was observed that either mode I crack propagation or mixed mode crack propagation occurs depending on the fiber array direction.

Quantitative analysis and imaging of elastic wave propagation are very important for the materials evaluation as well as flaw detection. The elastic wave propagation in an anisotropic media is more complex, and analysis and imaging become essential for flaw detection and materials evaluation. In the anisotropic media, the wave velocity is dependent on the propagation direction. In addition, the direction of group velocity is different from that of phase velocity, the direction of energy flow is not same as the propagation direction of wavefront (beam skewing effect). Especially, this effect becomes critical for the large anisotropic media such as fiber composite materials, and the results using elastic waves for those materials have to be analyzed considering the wave propagation mechanism. Since the analytical approach for the wave propagation in the anisotropic materials is limited, the numerical analysis such as finite difference method (FDM) have been used for these case. Therefore, 2-dimensional FDM program for the elastic wave propagation is developed, and wave propagation in anisotropic media are simulated.
