  • Add-on selling can provide new chances to increase sellers' profits and meet customers' needs. Although prior studies have advocated add-on selling for its business value, there is an argument that add-on selling can cause customer repulsion. Therefore, we need to understand customer purchasing pattern related to add-on selling in order to promote it and to mitigate the customer repulsion. To that end, we applied data mining techniques to the 24,925 transactions of data from an online open market in Korea. We then conducted feature selection to investigate the most influential factors that can explain the characteristics of add-on selling transactions using a classification model. We also identified association rules among add-on selling and promotions. Finally, based on the findings in our experiments, we proposed add-on selling strategies for the target online market.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the concept and content of teaching portfolios and to consider the use of teaching portfolios in medical education. The concept of teaching portfolios has several implications and has been used in multiple approaches in teaching-learning processes. The ten foreign universities chosen for this study employ teaching portfolios in their professorship and teaching achievement evaluation as a means of deciding promotions or incentivizing employees. However, domestic universities have not yet implemented this system. It is proposed that in order to improve the quality of education programs, teaching portfolios should be used much more frequently than syllabus. Medical school professors should apply what is called "Copernicus's Thinking" to their teaching preparations.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in purchase behaviors for school uniforms among adolescent consumer groups which were segmented by the type of retailer they patronized. An online survey was carried out and 907 data sets were analyzed using SPSS. The results support that classifying adolescent consumers according to what type of retailers they patronize lead to a proper understanding of the segmentation of the school uniform market. The adolescent consumers consisted of five groups categorized by the retailer types. These types included special stores, department stores, discount stores, small custom-made stores and stores designated by schools. The results also indicated that consumer groups segmented by retailer patronage differ significantly in their use of multimedia information sources. Five consumer groups showed significant differences in two purchase evaluative criteria: utilities and promotions.

  • The increased popularity of group-buying deal promotions has made research efforts grasping the importance of involvement on the positive reactions of consumers. This is due to the fact that consumer purchasing behaviors are highly likely to differ depending on a particular consumer's involvement level, referring to the basic interest in or importance of a group-buying purchase. In this regard, this paper (1) investigated the effects of involvement on purchase behaviors; and (2) examined whether the proposed relationships may vary depending on a consumer's deal prone propensity. Results revealed that a consumer's cognitive involvement in a restaurant promotion affects emotional involvement, ultimately leading to purchase intention. In addition, a consumer's deal proneness tendency was revealed to moderate the relationship between cognitive involvement and emotional involvement. Compared to low deal-prone consumers, high deal-prone consumers tended to have a higher level of emotional involvement resulting from cognitive involvement. Managerial implications and directions for future research are provided.

  • Price is one of the most important components of marketing mix. For consumers, price is an always-existing cue and definite evaluation criteria. However, information on price is meaningful only when it is perceived. Sources of price perception can be the actual retail price at the selling point, the internal reference price expected by consumers for a certain clothing product, and the external reference price advertised by marketer such as the price before mark-down. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of internal reference price on consumers' purchasing process of clothing products. A questionnaire including clothing stimuli was developed in order to assess consumers' internal reference price level. Usable data from 680 adult female urban residents were used for data analysis. Results indicated that consumers with relatively lower internal reference price tend to react low-price focused external reference price and use discount stores and unit price promotions. Consumers with relatively higher internal reference price advertisement are likely to have higher level of education, tend to infer price information to higher quality or prestige of products, and purchase clothing with regular retail price or coupons.
