  • The work roll of a Sendzimir mill has a small diameter in comparison to its length, so it is easily deformed by the rolling pressure. It also has a complex back up roll system, so it is difficult to analyze the roll deformation. For this reason in Part I we have developed a model which predicts the radial displacement of the roll. In this paper, we apply the model to a Sendzimir mill and propose a new model for the prediction of the deformed roll profile in a Sendzimir mill. The prediction accuracy of the new model is demonstrated through comparison of the predictions from the FE model.

  • In this study, the sliding wear in spur gears, using Archard's wear model, is analyzed. Formulas of tooth sliding wear depth along the line of action are derived. The tooth profile is modified Id make a smooth transmission of the normal loads and the cylinder profile for reducing the pressure spike is suggested. The sliding wear rate is calculated with these profiling results. We expect these modification methods to contribute to the reduction of sliding wear in the root and the tip of tooth and tooth edge.

  • Abrasive Jet Micromachining (AJM) is a process that uses high pressure air with micron-sized particles to erode a substrate. It has been considered as the most economic and appropriate technique to pattern glass surfaces for the flat panel applications. To accelerate the industrialization of AJM, it is necessary to understand the erosion mechanisms thoroughly. Thus, this paper introduces a new method to model the erosion mechanism in AJM. The model is developed by using the concept of the accumulation of the microdeformation caused by each particle. And this paper proposes the model added the effects of second impact. The developed model is used to simulate the erosion profile, and is compared with the model considered only first impact. It can be concluded that the proposed model predicts the erosion profile more accurately.

  • We apply a partitioned-solution (iterative-staggered) coupling method based on a fixed Eulerian mesh with the level set function to a large-deformation fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem where a large-deformable thin structure moves in a high-speed flow field, as an airbag does during deployment. This method combines advanced fluid and structure solvers-specifically, the constrained interpolation profile finite element method (CIP-FEM) for fluid Eulerian mesh and large-deformable structural elements for Lagrangian structural mesh. We express the large-deformable interface as a zero isosurface by the level set function, and introduce virtual nodes with level sets and structural normal velocities to generate the level set function according to the large-deformable interfacial geometry and enforce the kinematic condition at the interface. The virtual nodes are located in the direction normal to the structural mesh. It is confirmed that application of the method to unfolded airbag deployment simulation shows the adequacy of the method.

  • Thermally-induced deformation in SMC(Sheet Molding Compound) products is analyzed using three dimensional finite element method. Planar fiber orientation, which causes the anisotropic material properties, is calculated through the flow analysis during the compression stage of the mold. Also curing process is analyzed to predict temperature profile which has significant effects on warpage of SMC products. Through the developed procedure, effects of various process conditions such as charge location, mold temperature, fiber contents, and fiber orientations on deformation of final products are studied. and processing strategies are proposed to reduce the warpage and the shrinkage.

  • Titanium 6242(.alpha. + .betha.) alloy has a good strength/weight ratio and is used for aircraft components such as engine disks and compressor blades. When this material is forged at an elevated temperature, the process parameters should be carefully controlled because the process window of this material is quite narrow. In the present investigation, a rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method is used to predict the deformation behavior and temperature/strain distributions in an engine disk during near-net shape hot forging. The purpose of the investigation is to obtain a proper ram speed profile, assuming the hydraulic press used in the forging is capable of varying ram speed during loading. In result, it was found that the ram speed at constant strain-rate of 0.5/sec shows a sound deformation behavior, a relatively uniform deformation and a good temperature distribution. This information is also valuable in predicting resulting microstructures in the disk.

  • Extruded Profiles of Aluminum alloys have been widely used as parts and frames in mechanical and construction structures. Nowadays, mechanical processing of extruded Al alloy profiles is often employed for various industrial applications. Especially, the bending process is more and more applied and the process is greatly influenced by the distributed mechanical properties in the extruded profiles. Due to large reduction of area or extrusion ratio in ordinary production of extruded profiles, anisotropy is naturally induced by large severe deformation during the extrusion process. Therefore, the anisotropy properties play a great role in the bending process, as a post processing of extruded profiles and errors will be involved when the extruded profiles are treated as isotropic material, ignoring the induced anisotropy in the thin-walled extruded product. In the present work, the anisotropic material change is simulated, as a simplified method, employing Barlats six-component yield criterion in the rigid-plastic finite element method. Finite element computations are carried out for extrusion of a thin-walled part.

  • This research introduces easy tool manufacturing method regarding tool manufacturing procedure. In the conventional method, wire cutting machining and lapping operation of corner and render region were performed after shrink-fitting to ensure the accuracy of gear profile. But lapping operation is very difficult due to corner and render is located deep inside of die. In this research, wire cutting operation was performed after $1^{st}$ ring was shrink-fitted to ease lapping operation and increase the accuracy of corner radius. Before $2^{nd}$ ring fitting, lapping was completed. Elastic deformation amount due to $2^{nd}$ ring fitting and cold forging was calculated through finite element analysis and wire cutting specification was offset in that amount. Comparison of gear dimension between analysis and forged part ensures the validity of new manufacturing methods.
