  • To simulate the combustion process under stratified charged conditions, like GDI engines, the new combustion model is proposed, which is based on Welter's FAE model and Peters' PDF model for considering primary reactions. In addition to these models, the new laminar burning velocity correlation and diffusion flame model are also included in the proposed model. The former can be applicable to much wider range of equivalence ratio, pressure and temperature than the others, such as Keck's and Guilder's models, and the latter has been derived from water-gas shift reaction and hydrogen oxidation, by which the secondary reactions can be considered after primary reactions. 3-D computation has been performed by using STAR-CD v3.05 in the simple cylindrical geometry under stratified charged condition. Judging from the calculated results, the present model proves to be reasonable to simulate the characteristics of flame propagation and concentrations of products in burned regions.

  • A cycle simulation method is developed by coupling a commercial code, Ricardo's WAVE, with the SENKIN code from CHEMKIN packages to predict combustion characteristics of an HCCI engine. By solving detailed chemical kinetics the SENKIN code calculates the combustion products in the combustion chamber during the valve closing period, i.e. from IVC to EVO. Except the combustion chamber during the valve closing period the WAVE code solves thermodynamic status in the whole engine system. The cycle simulation of the complete engine system is made possible by exchanging the numerical solutions between the codes on the coupling positions of the intake port at IVC and of the exhaust port at EVO. This method is validated against the available experimental data from recent literatures. Auto ignition timing and cylinder pressure are well predicted for various engine operating conditions including a very high ECR rate although it shows a trend of sharp increase in cylinder pressure immediate after auto ignition. This trend is overpredicted especially for EGR cases, which may be due to the assumption of single-zone combustion model and the limit of the chemical kinetic model for the prediction of turbulent air-fuel mixing phenomena. A further work would be needed for the implementation of a multi-zone combustion model and the effect of turbulent mixing into the method.

  • A compute program based on the minimization of total Gibbs' free energy and enthalpy balance was developed to calculate the chemical equilibrium composition and adiabatic flame temperature, especially stressed on NO and CO concentration of Heavy oil. Twenty four components of combustion gases which would be produced from the combustion of Heavy oil were chosen and utilized for the products composition analysis of competing combustion reaction. As the results, following conclusions were turned out; (1) Maximum adiabatic flame temperature was found around to be 2900K, when the stoichiometric air ratio was 0.8. (2) Maximum NO quantity in adiabatic process was occurred when supplied air quantity was around 120% of theoretical air requirement. (3) NO and CO quantities were increased with combustion gas temperature at constant stoichiometric air ratio. (4) At constant temperature of combustion gas, NO quantity was increased and Co quantity was decreased with supplied air quantity.

  • Recently, as the interest in environmental issues increases, the construction industry needs to recycle blast furnace slag, circulating fluidized bed Combustion fly ash, etc. to solve industrial by-products, and to develop artificial stone. In this study, the strength characteristics based on blast furnace slag according to the addition rate of alkali stimulant NaOH are investigated. The experimental results showed that the flexural and compressive strengths increased with the addition of alkali stimulants. Based on these results, it will be presented as a basic research data for the manufacture of artificial stone and will be tested later.

  • An experimental study was carried out to obtain the fundamental data about the effects of radicals induced injection on premixture combustion. A constant volume combustor divided to the sub-chamber and the main chamber was used. The volume of the sub-chamber is set up to occupy less than 1.5% of that of whole combustion chamber. Radial twelve narrow passage holes are arranged between the main chamber and the sub-chamber. The products including radicals generated by spark ignition in the sub-chamber will derive the simultaneous multi-point ignition in the main chamber. While the equivalence ratio of pre-mixture in the main chamber and the sub-chamber is uniform. We have examined the effects of the sub-chamber volume, the diameter of passage hole, and the equivalence ratio on the combustion characteristics by means of burning pressure measurement and flame visualization. In the case of radical ignition method(RI), the overall turning time including the ignition delay became very short and the maximum burning pressure was slightly increased in comparison with those of the conventional spark ignition method(SI), that is, single chamber combustion without the sub-chamber. The combustible lean limit by RI method is extended to more ER=0.25 than that by SI method. Therefore the decrease of every emission including NOx and the improvement of fuel consumption is anticipated due to lean burn.

  • Interior of the building is used as a MDF plywood if there is a fire in order to delay the ignition, flame retardant paint, flame retardant solution and flame retardant film are being handled by the flame retardant. Combustion characteristics anf flame retardant performance results can be summarized as follows: General film with a sample showed that short of the criteria in terms of carbonation area, and the results of flame retardant paint, flame retardant solution and flame retardant film products satisfied the criteria. Toxic gases generated in the combustion process results in a film samples using a high incidence of carbon monoxide and the creation of a smoke could be seen. This confirm that is estimated that result from incomplete combustion of PVC film that attach, and displays high toxicity index and hazard class relatively.

  • A solution combustion process for the synthesis of hollandite (BaAl2Ti6O16) powders is described. SYNROC (synthetic rock) consists of four main titanate phases: perovskite, zirconolite, hollandite and rutile. Hollandite is one of the crystalline host matrices used for the disposal of high-level radioactive wastes because it immobilizes Sr and Lns elements by forming solid solutions. The solution combustion synthesis, which is a self-sustaining oxi-reduction reaction between a nitrate and organic fuel, generates an exothermic reaction and that heat converts the precursors into their corresponding oxide products in air. The process has high energy efficiency, fast heating rates, short reaction times, and high compositional homogeneity. To confirm the combustion synthesis reaction, FT-IR analysis was conducted using glycine with a carboxyl group and an amine as fuel to observe its bonding with metal element in the nitrate. TG-DTA, X-ray diffraction analysis, SEM and EDS were performed to confirm the formed phases and morphology. Powders with an uncontrolled shape were obtained through a general oxide-route process, confirming hollandite powders with micro-sized soft agglomerates consisting of nano-sized primary particles can be prepared using these methods.

  • The first purpose of this study is to verify the application of computer modelling to a enclosed space fire. The second one is to determine temperature distribution for the three different ventilation types in case of a enclosed space fire. The third one is to find out the ventilation direction and ventilation quantity to remove effectively heat and combustion products generated by a fire in variable air volume(VAV) system. Firstly, compared with experimental results of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL), numerical results show good agreements. Secondly, among three different ventilation types, the numerical analyses show the highest temperature distribution in occupied zone(up to 1.8 m from bottom) from firing moment to 100 sec. when supply ducts are placed in ceiling and extract duct is placed close to the bottom on side walls. This is due to disadvantageous position of extract duct in ventilating high temperature air which rise because of buoyancy force. Thirdly, this study finds out effective ventilation direction and ventilation quantity to remove heat and combustion products generated by a fire by using VAV system. $CO_2$ concentration is used as a fire fume removal index. As soon as a fire happens, ventilation direction is changed in order to gather and drive out fire fumes. In case of three times ventilation quantity of ordinary one, $CO_2$ concentration and temperature have begun to decrease at 120 sec. after firing, i.e.fire fumes have begun to be removed.

  • Recent research on stand-alone focused on the improvement and development of functions for solving problems such as the limited operating time of stand-alone installed at dwelling and their low reliability caused by false alarms, but it is more urgent to study on the operating range of stand-alone sensor in consideration of the impacts of combustion products on residents because the primary goal of fire safety is minimizing casualties. This study purposed to propose the optimized operating range of stand-alone sensor in consideration of the impacts of combustion products on residents. For this purpose, we made a mathematical approach to the change of temperature over the lapse of time in compartment fires similar to house fires, and established the standards of the body's response against heat and smoke based on literature review. In addition, we surveyed domestic and foreign technological standards for stand-alone sensor, and converted them to standards for residents of the body's response against heat and smoke using mathematical model equations and analyzed them comparatively.
