  • The authentication and implications of misleading labeling in milk and dairy products is important to protect against cheating consumers from adulteration and to alert sensitive consumers to any undeclared potential allergens. This need to support milk and dairy products labeling has led to the development of specific analytical techniques for the analysis of milk and dairy products ingredients. Recently, several methods based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), including restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), multiplex PCR, species-specific PCR, and real-time PCR, have been proposed as useful means for identifying species of origin in milk and dairy products, as well as quantifying and detecting any adulteration. These methods have particular advantages owing to their high specificity and sensitivity, as well as rapid processing time. In this review, we provide an updated and extensive overview of the PCR-based methods used for milk and dairy products authentication with a particular focus on the application of PCR methods to detect adulteration.

  • This paper aims to review how pre-processing facility of agricultural products can be established and operated. First of all, industry and its enterprises of pre-processing agricultural products are analyzed from the national perspective. Especially, five well-known pre-processing business units operated by producers' organizations are introduced including Ansung Machoom Agricultural Cooperative. Changwon City in Gyeongnam Province was chosen for a case study. Demand for local agricultural products by school feeding and other institutional food service in Changwon area is estimated and it is compared with the supply of agricultural products produced in the region. Questionnaire survey was done for school nutritionists and the main results are summarized. In the final stage, basic ideas for pre-processing facility of agricultural products in Changwon area are proposed considering the previous analyses. These ideas include size of the facility, participants and scope of the business, and location. Virtual profitability analysis is also conducted for the facility. Some suggestions for the proposed facility to be more successful in the future are suggested at the conclusion.

  • At a time when the demand for environmentally friendly products is soaring, the fashion industry is following suit. The industry is showing particular interest in natural-dyed products. Against this backdrop, this study conducted a literature review on the history of natural dyeing for textiles and on the types of natural dyes. In addition, this study identified recent trends in the fashion industry and applied the findings from the literature review to those trends. Through this process, possibilities for new designs were suggested. This study proposed designs for various items-t shirts, one-piece dresses, blouses, skirts, and knitwear-by using threads and textiles dyed from mugwort, Polygonum indigo, safflowers, Lithospermum erythrorhizon, and Sophora japonica flowers. This study is also meaningful in that it broadens the boundaries of design for natural-dyed fashion products. To that end, various designs were attempted by combining natural-dyed textiles or knits with leather, denim, and fur.

  • AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a major cellular energy sensor and master regulator of metabolic homeostasis. On activation, this cellular fuel sensing enzyme induces a series of metabolic changes to balance energy consumption via multiple downstream signaling pathways controlling nutrient uptake and energy metabolism. This pivotal role of AMPK has led to the development of numerous AMPK activators which might be used as novel drug candidates in the treatment of AMPK related disorders, diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic diseases. Consequently, a number of patents have been published on AMPK activators from natural products and other sources. This review covers the patented AMPK activators from natural products and their therapeutic potential in treatment or prevention of metabolic diseases including diabetes and obesity.

  • A considerable amount of research has been directed at subsistence markets in the recent past with the belief that these markets can be tapped profitably by marketers. Consequently, such markets have seen the launch of a number of innovative products. However, marketers of such forecasts need timely and accurate forecasts regarding the diffusion of their products. The Bass model has been widely used in marketing management to forecast diffusion of innovative products. Given the idiosyncrasies of subsistence markets, such forecasting requires an understanding of effective estimation techniques of the Bass model and their use in subsistence markets. This article reviews the literature to achieve this objective and find out gaps in research. A finding is that there is a lack of timely estimates of Bass model parameters for marketers to act on. Consequently, this article sets a research agenda that calls for timely forecasts at the takeoff stage using appropriate estimation techniques for the Bass model in the context of subsistence markets.

  • Recently, Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) has been attempting to modernize the review processes for generic drug products. Obviously, the modernization effort will lead to harmonize the guidelines in the process to the internationally acceptable level. In general, the Korean version of abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) consisted of similarly to those in developed countries (viz, specifications for bulk drug/preparation, bioequivalence, and stability); However, there exists a significant gap in the sophistication of the guidelines between the Korean version and those in the other countries. • A survey we conducted suggests that the ingestion of veterinary drug residues in edible animal parts constitutes a potential health hazard for its consumers, including, specifically, the possibility of developing multidrug resistance, carcinogenicity, and disruption of intestinal normal microflora. The survey results indicated that antibiotics, parasitic drugs, anticoccidial, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are broadly used, and this use in livestock is associated with the appearance of residues in various animal products such as milk, meat, and eggs. We observed that different cooking procedures, heating temperatures, storage times, fermentation, and pH have the potential to decrease drug residues in animal products. Several studies have reported the use of thermal treatments and sterilization to decrease the quantity of antibiotics such as tetracycline, oxytetracycline, macrolides, and sulfonamides, in animal products. Fermentation treatments also decreased levels of penicillin and pesticides such as dimethoate, malathion, Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene, and lindane. pH, known to influence decreases in cloxacillin and oxacillin levels, reportedly enhanced the dissolution of antimicrobial drug residues. Pressure cooking also reduced aldrin, dieldrin, and endosulfan in animal products. Therefore, this review provides updated information on the control of drug residues in animal products, which is of significance to veterinarians, livestock producers, and consumer health.

  • Many consumers intend to make environmentally purchase. However, this is not always what occurs. A gap exists between consumer intentions to purchase environmentally friendly products and their actual purchase behavior. In this study, we examined the effect of situational factors such as price sensitivity, product quality perception, and label trust on the relationship between purchase intention and purchase behavior for environmentally friendly products. First, we conducted a theoretical consideration through a review of literature on price sensitivity, product quality perception, label trust, purchase intention and purchase behavior. Based on the literature review, we designed a structural model and developed the hypotheses. Next, we collected data using a survey and processed them statistically in order to verify the hypotheses. A total of 213 samples were collected and the data were analyzed using a structural equation model (LISREL 8.70). The results suggest that the situational factor of label trust has a moderating effect on the relationship between purchase intention and purchase behavior for environmentally friendly products. However, price sensitivity and product quality perception have no moderating effect. This means that trust in labels is important when consumers want to buy environmentally friendly products. Although this study has some limitations, it is expected that it will positively trigger follow-up research.
