  • Sargassum confusum을 대상으로 동해안 오호리 지역에서 1983년 3월 부더 1984년 4월까지 이 종의 생장 및 일차생산력을 조사하였다. S. confusum은 2월에 생장하기 시작하여 여름에 최대생장을 나타낸 후 빠른 속도로 쇠퇴하는 생육주기를 가진다. 생식활동은 6월에 주로 이루어 진다. 이러한 생장양상은 수온과 밀접한 관제를 갖는다. 최대성장율은 5월의 1.3cm/day이며 최대길이는 8월의 120cm이다. 산소명암병법으로 측정된 S. confusum의 일순생산력은 6월에 11.2 gC/dry wt/day이며 이를 기초로 추정한 연생산력은 745 gC/$m^2$/yr이다. 한편 현존량의 변화에만 의존하여 추정된 연생산력은 745 gC/$m^2$/yr로서 탈락에 의한 손실이 약 60%에 달하고 있다.

  • A. pullulans ATCC 42023를 사용하여 고분자량의 pullulan을 대량생산하기 위한 연구로써, 용존산소량과 pH가 균체 성장 및 pullulan 생산에 미치는 영향에 대하여 연구하였다. pullulan의 분해 효소에 대한 저항성을 가지고 산업적으로 유용한 고분자량의 pullulan을 생산하기 위해서 pH를 6.5로 조절할 경우, 분자량 20만 이상의 high molecular weight의 productivity가 가장 높았으며 용존산소량의 증가로 pullulan productivity를 증가시킬 수 있었다.

Yield Gap Analysis of Mulberry Sericulture in Northwest India

  • At the interface of reducing agricultural income and increasing unemployment in agrarian economy of rural India, this article summarizes and evaluates the state of mulberry sericulture in northwest India, which includes Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. In $11^{th}$ plan period (2007-2012), there was an addition of 6 196 ha (217.09 %) of mulberry acreage at annual linier growth rate of 33.44%. However, total silk production could increase only by 54.64 MT (78.57%) at annual linier growth rate of 15.59 %, due to 43.93% (10.82 kg/ha) reduction in silk productivity at negative growth rate of -13.46%, annually. And now, average raw silk productivity in north-western states of India remains at 13.81 kg/ha, which is lower by 452.93 % (76.36 kg) in comparison to the national average of 100.90 kg/ha. Paper summaries the reasons for increasing cocoon yield gap at farmer's level and discuss the ways and means to increase raw silk productivity to improve the livelihood delivery of mulberry sericulture in northwest India.

Rumen Manipulation to Improve Animal Productivity

  • Anaerobic rumen microorganisms mainly bacteria, protozoa and fungi degrade ligno-cellulosic feeds consumed by the ruminants. The ruminants in developing countries are predominantly maintained on low grade roughage and grazing on degraded range land resulting in their poor nutrient utilization and productivity. Hence, manipulation of rumen fermentation was tried during last two decades to optimize ruminal fermentation for improving nutrient utilization and productivity of the animals. Modification of rumen microbial composition and their activity was attempted by using chemical additives those selectively effect rumen microbes, introduction of naturally occurring or genetically modified foreign microbes into the rumen and genetically manipulation of existing microbes in the rumen ecosystem. Accordingly, rumen protozoa were eliminated by defaunation for reducing ruminal methane production and increasing protein outflow in the intestine, resulting in improve growth and feed conversion efficiency of the animals. Further, Interspecies trans-inoculation of rumen microbes was also successfully used for annulment of dietary toxic factor. Additionally, probiotics of bacterial and yeast origin have been used in animal feeding to stabilize rumen fermentation, reduced incidence of diarrhoea and thus improving growth and feed conversion efficiency of young stalk. It is envisaged that genetic manipulation of rumen microorganisms has enormous research potential in developing countries. In view of feed resource availability more emphasis has to be given for manipulating rumen fermentation to increase cellulolytic activity for efficient utilization of low grade roughage.

탄닌 함유 사초식물의 발아 및 생육특성 (Germination and Growth Characteristics of Tannin Containing Forage Crops)

  • In an effort to investigate the germination and growth characteristics of tannin containing forage crops (such as chicory, birdsfoot trefoil, Lotus pedunculatus, sulla, lespedeza, crownvetch, sainfoin), germinativity, seedling vigor, and productivity were studied. Although the cumulative germination percentage (CGP) of chicory and birdsfoot trefoil was low, the germination rate(GR) and days to reach 50% of final germination(Gt50) were excellent. Crownvetch, lespedeza and sainfoin showed poor germination. Chicory seeds were light but the rate of emergence and establishment were high. Seeds of Lotus pedunculatus and birdsfoot trefoil were also small, but their rates of emergence and establishment were quite good. On the other hand, seeds of sainfoin and crownvetch were heavy but their emergence and establishment rate were very low. Lespedeza was the best in getting over the hot summer, and crownvetch also survived well during summer. Chicory was good in productivity and early growing but its persistence was not good. In case of birdsfoot trefoil and Lotus pedunculatus their early growing were slow but their productivity and persistence were fairly well. Lespedeza, crownvetch, and sainfoin showed poor growth in Korea. Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that chicory would be better to use as short term high productive forage crop, and Lotus pedunculatus and birdsfoot trefoil could be used as continuous functional forage crops in Korea. 발광다이오드를 이용한 광파장에 따른 Chlorella vulgaris의 생장과 지방산 생산에 미치는 효과 (Effect of Light Quality on Growth and Fatty Acid Production in Chlorella vugaris Using Light Emitting Diodes)

  • Microalgae are considered as superior biodiesel producers, because they could effectively produce high amount of lipid with fast growth rate. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris was exposed to various light wavelengths (${\lambda}_{max}$ 470 nm, ${\lambda}_{max}$ 525 nm, and ${\lambda}_{max}$ 660 nm) using light emitting diodes (LEDs) to examine effect of light quality on their growth and fatty acid production in 0.4-L bubble column photobioreactors. Fluorescent lamps were also used as polychromatic light sources (control). From the results, biomass productivity was varied by light wavelength from 0.05 g/L/day to 0.30 g/L/day. Maximum biomass productivity was obtained from red LED among tested ones. We also observed that contents of oleic acid and linolenic acid, which affect biodiesel properties, were significantly changed depending on supplied wavelength. These results indicated that production of algal biomass, and fatty acid content and productivity could be improved or controlled by supplying specific light wavelength.

The Effect of Economic Openness on Multifactor Productivity: Empirical Evidence from Selected Asian Countries

  • Variation in demand, natural resource availability, and technological advancement within a country are the main reasons for necessitating export and import activities between nations. Accordingly, this paper aims to analyze the effect of economic openness on Multifactor Productivity (MFP) in selected Asian countries (Vietnam, Thailand, The Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, and Singapore) based on data for the period 1990-2018. The analysis conducted in the study employed the panel ARDL approach based on the estimation by Pooled Mean Group (PMG), Mean Group (MG), and Dynamic Fixed Effect (DFE). The Hausman test conducted indicates that the PMG estimation is better than that of MG and DFE since it has a higher variability value than the significance value. The results revealed that economic openness is able to elicit significant and positive effects on short-term and long-term MFP growth. In addition, the study established that other variable, such as the number of schooling years, are also able to produce a positive and significant effect on MFP growth in the long term. Since economic openness can impact MFP growth, every country should thus increase its export activities through more capital and worker inputs that will stimulate greater production.

우리나라의 R&D 생산성 및 효율성 분석: OECD 국가와의 비교를 중심으로 (An Analysis on the R&D Productivity and Efficiency of Korea: Focused on Comparison with the OECD Countries)

  • 본 연구는 1984년부터 패널자료의 확보가 가능한 17개 OECD 국가를 표본으로 하여 R&D 생산성 및 효율성에 대한 실증분석을 통해 비교하고 우리나라의 수준과 특징을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 그 성과를 산출(output) 측면과 성과(outcome) 측면으로 구분하고, 맘퀴스트 생산성지수와 자료포락분석방법을 활용하여 R&D경로단계별 생산성 및 효율성과 그 변화추이를 비교분석하였다. 우리나라는 R&D 투자 대비 산출 생산성은 매우 높은 반면, 평균효율성은 매우 낮게 나타났으며, 효율성의 시계열 변화추이를 보면 최초 지수 0.10에서 시작하여 최종 0.83까지 가파르게 상승하면서 주요 선진국들 수준에 도달하였다. R&D 산출 대비 생산성은 매우 낮으며, 통합 프런티어에 대한 효율성은 최초 지수 1.00에서 최종 0.057까지 주요 선진국들 수준으로 가파르게 하락하여 왔다. 그리고 상관분석을 통해 R&D 산출 대비 생산성이 곧 R&D 투자 대비 생산성을 가늠하는 지표가 될 수 있음을 보았다. 본 연구는 우리나라의 R&D 생산성 및 효율성 향상을 위해서는 R&D 투자 및 산출 증대의 노력이상으로 R&D 산출물의 활용 측면이 보다 강화되어야 하고 이를 위해 효과적인 기술확산 체계 구축, 기술금융시장환경 조성 및 사업화에 성공하기까지 실질적인 인큐베이팅 제공 등 전반적인 기술사업화 시스템의 혁신이 주요 과제임을 시사하고 있다.

누룩으로부터 젖산세균의 분리 및 특성 (Identification and characteristics of Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Nuruk)

  • Three lactic acid bacteria (C-1 K-3 and T-1 strain) were isolated from Nuruk and characterized subsequently. They were useful strains for production of lactic acid and their growth was inhibited at 10% ethanol pH 4 These strains were identified as lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis NR C-1 Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. mesenterides NR K-3 and pediococcus pentosaceus NR T-1 respectively by morphological physiological and biochemical characterization Lac lactis subsp lactis NR C-1 showed the highest lactic acid productivity. Leu measenteroides subsp mesenteroides NR K-3 showed stable lactic acid productivity and its growth was inhibited at pH 4. P pentosaceus NR T-1 had lower lactic acid productivity than the other two bacteria but it could not grow at 10% ethanol pH 4 The lactic acid productivity of these three strains in MRS broth were higher than that in Skim milk media the optimum pH and temperature for the lactic acid production of the three strains were 30-32$^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0∼6.8 Glucose was the optimal carbon souorce for the lactic acid production. In terms of antagonism lac lactis subsp lactis NR c-1 showed somewhat inhibitory efects against some Gram positive rod and cocci such as Lactobacillus brevis and Streptococcus mitis. And Leu mesenteroides subsp mesenteroides NR K-3 showed the inhibitory effects against Streptococcus mitis but P. pentosaceus NR T-1 didn't show any inhibitory effects against tested strains.

A Novel Approach to the Production of Hyaluronic Acid by Streptococcus zooepidemicus

  • It has been shown that the initial conditions of bacterial cultivation are extremely important for the successful production of hyaluronic acid (HA) by fermentation. We investigated several parameters that affect cell growth rate and the productivity and molecular weight of hyaluronic acid--i.e., agitation speed, aeration rate, culture temperature, pH, and pressure--to determine how to optimize the production of HA by Streptococcus zooepidemicus on an industrial scale. Using a 30-1 jar fermentor under laboratory conditions, we achieved maximum HA productivity and biomass when the agitation speed and aeration rate were increased simultaneously. By shifting the temperature downward from 35$^{\circ}C$ to 32$^{\circ}C$ at key levels of cell growth during the fermentation process, we were able to obtain HA with a molecular weight of $2.8{\times}10^6$ at a productivity of 5.3 g/l. Moreover, we reproduced these optimized conditions successfully in three 30-1 jar fermentors. By reproducing these conditions in a 3-$m^3$ fermentor, we were able to produce HA with a molecular weight of $2.9{\times}10^6$ at a productivity of 5.4 g/l under large-scale conditions.
