  • I provide an overview of the application of hydroacoustic methods in South Korea to understand the current research status in relation to fisheries acoustics and to determine which areas require further study. One main purpose for using a scientific echosounder, a representative tool using the hydroacoustic method, is to evaluate the abundance of fisheries resources. Thus, two representative methods for abundance estimation are described. The history of fisheries acoustics worldwide is also summarized.

  • Technical advances in manufacturing techniques and applied technologies have been made for bi cell manufacture, and are currently being implemented in the areas of discrete electrode / bi cell assembly, and electrode / separator lamination. Not only have improvements been noted in the reliability of the mechanical assembly and the increase in yields and decrease in costs, battery electrical performance has also been enhanced thru these assembly techniques. Evidence has been shown that the lamination techniques can influence porosity and electrolyte dispersion, and therefore electrical performance and long term reliability of the cells.

  • Chitin and chitosan has been almost neglected until 1960s, although they are the second largest biomass on earth. Their major use were as a natural flocculant for waste-water treatment, and partially used in the areas of food, feed industry, cosmetics and medicine. Possible sources of chitin among biomass were tested, and antibacterial activity and viscosity-concentration relation- ship of diluted acidic solution were examined.

  • This study presents a developmental pattern of technological capability of catching-up players in terms of production, investment, innovation and networking capability. In order to do this, the study develops an analytical framework and examines the experience of the Korean semiconductor industry. Although the presented pattern in the study is not a general pattern for all catching-up players, this pattern implies one of the useful dynamic strategies for catching-up players in developing countries. In addition, this study discusses its contributions and further research areas in the last part of the paper.

  • Protogyny is known in 14 families of fishes, 11 of which inhabit coral reef areas. The wrasses (Labridae) comprise a large and well-known family of coral reef fishes that exhibit sequential hermaphroditism. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the allomeoic growth patterns of several morphometric characteristics, including those used commonly to distinguish sexes of cocktail wrasse, pteragogus aurigarius (Richardson) and to assess their effectiveness in discriminating between males and females. • In this paper, methods of human figure representation in computer graphics are described. Many applications of the human figure representation are found in areas including industry, advertisement, and cartoon production and further research for the methods that show the human figure more realistically is ex- pected. Two analytic methods for human model, kinematics and dynamics, are ex- plained and the characteristics of the man-machine interface systems that include human figure representation are presented. Various techniques of the human figure representation based on kinematics or(and) dynamics are discussed and representation methods of human body segments such as hand, face, spine are introduced in this paper.

  • The Container crane is mainly used in the harbor. But in spite of this wide use, it is a fact that there are still areas for automation, concerning the operator and the control system. If the encoding function is enhanced, then control effect can be increased to some extent. Since the distance from the hoist to the trolley cam be measured, the moving distance from the loading and unloading can be minimized. If this is applied to the real system, hazard elements can be eliminated and in given time since more unloading can be done, congestion can be reduced.

  • This study assesses groundwater vulnerability to contaminants in industrial and residential/commercial areas of the city of Changwon, using DRASTIC technique and groundwater data. The DRASTIC technique was originally applied to situations in which the contamination sources are at the ground surface, and the contaminants flow into the groundwater with infiltration of rainfall. Mostly the industrial area has higher DRASTIC indices than the residential/commercial area. However, a part of the residential/commercial area having much groundwater production and great drawdown is more contaminated in groundwater than other industrial and the residential/commercial areas even if it has lowest DRASTIC indices in the study area. It indicates that groundwater contamination in urban areas can be closely related to excessive pumping resulting in a lowering of the water level. The correlation coefficient between minimum DRASTIC indices and the degree of poor water quality for 10 districts is as low as 0.40. On the other hand, the correlation coefficients between minimum DRASTIC indices and the groundwater discharge rate, and between minimum DRASTIC indices and well distribution density per unit area are 0.70 and 0.87, respectively. Thus, to evaluate the potential of groundwater contamination in urban areas, it is necessary to consider other human-made factors such as groundwater withdrawal rate and well distribution density per unit area as well as the existing seven DRASTIC factors.
