Effect of Acetic Acid on Bacteriocin Production by Gram-Positive Bacteria

  • Acetic acid is indirectly involved in cell center metabolism, and acetic acid metabolism is the core of central metabolism, affecting and regulating the production of bacteriocin. Bacteriocin is a natural food preservative that has been used in the meat and dairy industries and winemaking. In this paper, the effects of acetic acid on bacteriocin produced by Gram-positive bacteria were reviewed. It was found that acetic acid in the undissociated state can diffuse freely through the hydrophobic layer of the membrane and dissociate, affecting the production, yield, and activity of bacteriocin. In particular, the effect of acetic acid on cell membranes is summarized. The link between acetic acid metabolism, quorum sensing, and bacteriocin production mechanisms is also highlighted.

  • Development of village chicken production can be a sustainable way of helping to meet the welfare needs of rural populations and raise their living standards. There is a dearth of information on research conducted to characterize, understand and develop the village chicken production systems in Zimbabwe. This review focuses on constraints, opportunities and research needs for the improvement of village chicken productivity in Zimbabwe. Village chicken production in Zimbabwe is extensive and dominated by indigenous chickens that exhibit remarkable adaptation to local environments. The multitude functions of village chickens, which include the provision of high quality protein meat and eggs, cash through sales and socio-cultural roles, are discussed in detail. Human gender aspects in village chicken production are highlighted. The factors that hamper village chicken productivity are reviewed together with opportunities and research needs. The major constraints include shortage of feed, poor health and housing management. Any improvements in these constraints may lead to sustainable increase in village chicken productivity.

패션소품생산 분야의 국가직무능력표준(NCS) 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the National Competency Standards of Fashion Accessories Production)

  • This study analyzed the process of development and verification of standards through the competency analysis of fashion accessories products in the development of 'National Competency Standards'(NCS), which was carried out in 2013 for the fashion industry. The NCS for fashion accessories production was developed through three Focus Group Interviews (FGIs) and fashion accessories production was defined as "the process of design, development and manufacture intended to produce items that improve the degree of completion of fashion products that are produced from textile fabric, knitted fabric, leather and other materials such as bags, belts, hats, gloves, scarves, neckties and socks with the exception of clothes". The competency unit for fashion accessories production was analyzed in 11 categories: development of design; development of materials; production of prototype samples; calculation of cost; determination of mass production model and price; planning of main manufacture process; ordering of materials; planning for mass production; preparation for mass production; mass production; and inspection of completed products, and the verification was carried out on development outcomes through a survey carried out of on-site personnel. This study recommends the following direction for future improvements based on an analysis of the development process of the NCS for fashion accessories production. First, future development of standards should first provide a rational category system for each area of fashion good production based on the production process, which should be followed by a detailed competency survey. Second, in order to ensure a more efficient verification survey, an expert for each competency unit should be designated for the develop standard to induce a more sincere response. Also the questionnaire should require supplementation in order to collect the various additional opinions of experts of the field. Finally, this study concludes that it is urgent to procure an education infrastructure and specialized professors in order to apply the competency standard for fashion accessories production to the education sector. This study also concludes that the government will be required to provide systematic and consistent support aimed at supplementing development and forming a firm collaborative working environment for the industry and academia in order to improve the current education environment and build a more field-oriented education environment.

초등학생의 가상현실 콘텐츠 제작 교육에 관한 연구 (A Study on Elementary Students' Virtual Reality Content Production Education)

  • 본 연구는 초등학교 수업에 가상현실을 도입하고 가상현실 콘텐츠를 제작하는 교육을 통해 가상현실 콘텐츠 제작을 수업을 진행한 반과 적용하지 않은 반의 수업 차이를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 K. A. P. 설문조사지를 작성하였고, 설문 진행 후 가상현실 콘텐츠 제작 교육의 효과를 분석하였다. 가상현실 콘텐츠 저작도구로는 코스페이시스를 활용하였다. 블록리(blockly) 기반 프로그램으로 코딩을 할 수 있어 학생들이 기능을 익히기에 어렵지 않았다. 현장 분석 결과 실천 영역에서 성과가 나타났다. 이 수업 운영 경험을 바탕으로 가상현실을 활용한 수업을 초등학교 현장에 적용하고 연구하는 방법을 제시한다.

광어 종자생산업체의 수익성 분석 (Profitability Analysis of Flatfish Fry Production Farms)

  • This study is aimed to analyze the profitability of flatfish fry production farms in the Republic of Korea. The continuous and stable production of flatfish fries is one of important factors that increases the possibility of flatfish aquaculture's success. It is also the basis of aquaculture industry that estimates the quantity and quality of fishery products from aquaculture. Based on the surveyed data, production values and costs of flatfish fry production are estimated and compared to determine the profitability of flatfish fry production by farm. Results show that average return on sales of farms is 21.2%(12.4~26.3%), indicating that flatfish fry production would be profitable under the current production and market conditions. Sensitivity analyses of main variables (survival rate and selling price) indicate that the profitability of flatfish fry production farms can be significantly decreased when the survival rate and selling price would be slightly decreased.

The Integrins Involved in Soybean Agglutinin-Induced Cell Cycle Alterations in IPEC-J2

  • Soybean agglutinin (SBA) is an anti-nutritional factor of soybean, affecting cell proliferation and inducing cytotoxicity. Integrins are transmembrane receptors, mediating a variety of cell biological processes. This research aims to study the effects of SBA on cell proliferation and cell cycle progression of the intestinal epithelial cell line from piglets (IPEC-J2), to identify the integrin subunits especially expressed in IPEC-J2s, and to analyze the functions of these integrins on IPEC-J2 cell cycle progression and SBA-induced IPEC-J2 cell cycle alteration. The results showed that SBA lowered cell proliferation rate as the cell cycle progression from G0/G1 to S phase (P < 0.05) was inhibited. Moreover, SBA lowered mRNA expression of cell cycle-related gene CDK4, Cyclin E and Cyclin D1 (P < 0.05). We successfully identified integrins ${\alpha}2$, ${\alpha}3$, ${\alpha}6$, ${\beta}1$, and ${\beta}4$ in IPEC-J2s. These five subunits were crucial to maintain normal cell proliferation and cell cycle progression in IPEC-J2s. Restrain of either these five subunits by their inhibitors, lowered cell proliferation rate, and arrested the cells at G0/G1 phase of cell cycle (P < 0.05). Further analysis indicated that integrin ${\alpha}2$, ${\alpha}6$, and ${\beta}1$ were involved in the blocking of G0/G1 phase induced by SBA. In conclusion, these results suggested that SBA lowered the IPEC-J2 cell proliferation rate through the perturbation of cell cycle progression. Furthermore, integrins were important for IPEC-J2 cell cycle progression, and they were involved in the process of SBA-induced cell cycle progression alteration, which provide a basis for further revealing SBA anti-proliferation and anti-nutritional mechanism.

Assessing agricultural competitiveness of cities and counties in Gyeongbuk

  • The government of Gyeongbuk in Korea increased the financial input in the agricultural sector by 43% from 2008 through 2012. However, the productivity of the agricultural sector in Gyeongbuk rose only about 3.6% during the same period. This study evaluated the agricultural competitiveness of each city or county in Gyeongbuk using six evaluation indices (scale, productivity, finance input, location quotient, technical education, and total) and investigated the relationship between the indices and total values of agricultural productions. The results show that Sangju, Gyeongju, Andong, Uiseong, and Seongju have high competitiveness for the scale index. For the productivity index, Gimcheon, Mungyeong, Ulleung, Yeongju, and Seongju were highly evaluated. For the location quotient index, Yeongcheon, Uiseong, Cheongdo, Seongju, and Sangju have high competitiveness. Uiseong, Yeongdeok, Cheongsong, Gunwi, and Yeongyang were highly evaluated for the agricultural finance input index. For the agricultural technical education index, Chilgok, Sangju, Mungyeong, Uiseong, and Gyeongju have high competitiveness. Finally, Sangju, Euiseong, Yeongcheon, Gyeongju, and Andong were highly evaluated for the total competitive index, while Yeongdeok, Yeongyang, Goryeong, Uljin, and Cheongsong have a low competitiveness for the total competitive index. This study also found that out of five indices, scale, location quotient, and technical education indices have a positive and statistically significant effect on the total values of agricultural production. However, we did not find any statistically significant effect of the productivity and finance input indices on the total values of agricultural production. Hence, we can conclude that the government should focus their agricultural policy on scale, location quotient and education to improve total agricultural production.

교육이 소비의 효율성에 미치는 영향 -가계생산활동 이론의 응용- (The Effect of Education on Efficiency in Consumption -An Application of the Household Production Function Approach-)

  • This study attempts to shed some lights on an effect of consumer education by using the formal education as a proxy variable and measuring the effect of the formal education on consumer behavior. This study utilizes economic theories and develops a theory to analyze the effect. Within the conceptual framework employed in this study, it is hypothesized that education raises productivity in the nonmarket sector and thereby affects consumer behavior in the same manner as money income affects behavior. the data are taken from the self-administered questionnaires among 553 housewives in July 1987. the procedure used is to fit separate engel curves for the expenditures on various goods by the weighted regression technique. The empirical results support the hpothesis. Therefore, this study shows positive effects of education on the productivity of household production functions. This result implies that consumer education would enhance efficiency in consumer behavior significantly.

애니메이션 제작을 통한 미디어 리터러시 교육 방향 연구 (A Study on the direction of Media Literacy education based on the development of animation)

  • 본 연구는 애니메이션 제작을 통한 차세대 미디어 리터러시 교육 프로그램 개발을 목표로 그 방향성을 제시하고자 하였다. 선행 연구를 통한 미디어 리터러시 교육 목표 설정과 애니메이션 제작 과정을 연계하여 총 4단계의 교육 프로그램을 구성하였다. 첫 번째, 미디어 접근역량 강화를 위한 애니메이션 제작 도구 습득 단계. 두 번째, 창의적 제작 역량 강화를 위한 애니메이션 제작 실습 단계. 세 번째, 비판적 이해력 함양을 위한 결과물 발표 및 토론 단계. 네 번째, 사회적 소통 역량 강화를 위한 사회적 공유 단계이다. 교육 프로그램의 실제 적용을 위해 한서대학교 애니메이션 여름 캠프를 위한 교육 모형으로 제작되어 충청도 지역 79명의 중학생에게 교육되었다. 애니메이션 제작을 기반으로 한 교육과정을 통해 학생들의 비판적 분석 능력이 향상되었고 능동적인 참여자로 바뀌는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 향후 다양한 미디어를 활용한 교육 프로그램 개발의 지속적인 연구가 필요할 것이다.

Efficient and Cost-Reduced Glucoamylase Fed-Batch Production with Alternative Carbon Sources

  • Glucoamylase is an important industrial enzyme. Glucoamylase production by industrial Aspergillus niger strain featured with two major problems: (i) empirical substrate feeding methods deteriorating the fermentation performance; and (ii) the high raw materials cost limiting the economics of the glucoamylase product with delegated specification. In this study, we first proposed a novel three-stage varied-rate substrate feeding strategy for efficient glucoamylase production in a 5 L bioreactor using the standard feeding medium, by comparing the changing patterns of the important physiological parameters such as DO, OUR, RQ, etc., when using different substrate feeding strategies. With this strategy, the glucoamylase activity and productivity reached higher levels of 11,000 U/ml and 84.6 U/ml/h, respectively. The performance enhancement in this case was beneficial from the following results: DO and OUR could be controlled at the higher levels (30%, 43.83 mmol/l/h), while RQ was maintained at a stable/lower level of 0.60 simultaneously throughout the fed-batch phase. Based on this three-stage varied-rate substrate feeding strategy, we further evaluated the economics of using alternative carbon sources, attempting to reduce the raw materials cost. The results revealed that cornstarch hydrolysate could be considered as the best carbon source to replace the standard and expensive feeding medium. In this case, the production cost of the glucoamylase with delegated specification (5,000 U/ml) could be saved by more than 61% while the product quality be ensured simultaneously. The proposed strategy showed application potential in improving the economics of industrial glucoamylase production.
