The Impact of An Interaction between Product Quality and Perceived Risk on Seller Profit

  • Purpose: This study examines the effect of full information disclosure on seller profit when there exists information asymmetry between sellers and buyers, focusing on the risk averseness of buyers. By investigating the interaction between product quality and perceived risk through online sales data, we attempt to figure out the incentive structure of full information disclosure specifically when buyers are risk-averse, so that we can suggest more feasible information disclosure strategy to sellers. Research design, data and methodology: Our empirical model analyzes the sales data of collectible goods from a major online seller using Poisson regression. In our model, we have specifically considered risk-averseness of buyers by estimating the interaction effect between the product quality and perceived risk on seller profit, aiming for a more precise empirical analysis on sellers' incentive structure of full disclosure. Results: Our empirical analysis strongly supports the effect of interaction between product quality and perceived risk, showing that the incentive for full disclosure is much stronger when product quality is higher, and vice versa. Therefore, sellers are strongly encouraged to voluntarily reveal product weaknesses when their product quality is higher than average, while it is more profitable to hide any product defects when quality claim is lower than average. Conclusions: This study supports the related literature by confirming economic incentives for full disclosure, and also supplements and strengthens previous studies by presenting that the effect of interaction between product quality and perceived risk strongly affects seller profit. Our unique finding supports both mandatory disclosure and voluntary disclosure arguments and presents practical implications to marketing managers by suggesting that seller's incentive for revealing weaknesses depends on the level of seller's product quality.

Investigation of Consumers' Attitudes toward Product Liability (소비자의 제조물책임에 대한 태도)

  • This research explores the consumer perspective on several questions relating to product liability. The purpose of this study was (1) to assess consumers' attitudes level toward product liability, and (2) to identify respondents' socio-economic and consumer related variables that influence attitudes toward product liability. Data were collected from questionaires with 319 adults who were residents of Seoul. This paper presents the results of general agreement(2.59-3.58 by 4 point likert) concerning important issues related product liability. The attitudes toward product liability were significant partly according to education level, job, monthly family income, consumer education experience, the experience of reading journals, consumer information contact frequency and product safety orientation.

  • The exchange of model design data among heterogeneous CAD systems is very difficult because each CAD system has different data structures suitable for its own functions. STEP represents product information in a common computer-interpretable form that is required to remain complete and consistent when the product information is needed to be exchanged among different computer systems. However, STEP has complex architecture to represent point, line, curve and vectors of element. Moreover it can't represent geometry data of feature based models. In this study, a structure of XML document that represents geometry data of feature based models as neutral format has been developed. To use the developed XML document, a converter also has been developed to exchange modules so that it can exchange feature based data models among heterogeneous CAD systems. Developed XML document and Converter have been applied to commercial CAD systems.

A study on the construction of the quality prediction model by artificial neural intelligence through integrated learning of CAE-based data and experimental data in the injection molding process (사출성형공정에서 CAE 기반 품질 데이터와 실험 데이터의 통합 학습을 통한 인공지능 품질 예측 모델 구축에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, an artificial neural network model was constructed to convert CAE analysis data into similar experimental data. In the analysis and experiment, the injection molding data for 50 conditions were acquired through the design of experiment and random selection method. The injection molding conditions and the weight, height, and diameter of the product derived from CAE results were used as the input parameters for learning of the convert model. Also the product qualities of experimental results were used as the output parameters for learning of the convert model. The accuracy of the convert model showed RMSE values of 0.06g, 0.03mm, and 0.03mm in weight, height, and diameter, respectively. As the next step, additional randomly selected conditions were created and CAE analysis was performed. Then, the additional CAE analysis data were converted to similar experimental data through the conversion model. An artificial neural network model was constructed to predict the quality of injection molded product by using converted similar experimental data and injection molding experiment data. The injection molding conditions were used as input parameters for learning of the predicted model and weight, height, and diameter of the product were used as output parameters for learning. As a result of evaluating the performance of the prediction model, the predicted weight, height, and diameter showed RMSE values of 0.11g, 0.03mm, and 0.05mm and in terms of quality criteria of the target product, all of them showed accurate results satisfying the criteria range.

  • The purposes of this study was to find out 1) the difference in the importance degree of store attribute according to interaction between fashion product types and task situations, 2) the difference in the importance degree of store attribute according to the patronized store types on the basis of fashion product types. The subjects were female adults who lived in Seoul. The sampling method was quota sampling. The data was obtained from 391 questionnaires. The data were analyzed using frequency, one-way ANOVA, Duncan test, and two-way ANOVA by means of SPSS. The results were as follows; 1. According to fashion product types and task situations, there were significant differences in factors of product features, services, physical environments of the store, and price. 2. According to interaction between fashion product types and task situations, there were significant differences in factors of product features, services, physical environments of the store, and price. 3. There were significant differences in factors of product features, services, physical environments of the store, and location of store according to patronized store types, when a consumer purchased a suit, casual wear and inner wear.

The Determinants of Export Pattern in Manufactures of Meat and Fish Products (우리나라 육류가공업 및 수산물가공업의 수출결정요인 분석)

  • This study focused on manufactures of meat and fish products among food manufactures, made a time series data for the period from 1983 to 2002, and applied the data to Hecksher-Ohlin model to analyze the elements of pattern of export in food processing industries of Korea. The results are as follows; First, the average annual growth rate of constant exports has increased for meat product and fish product industries in Korea. But, for fish product industries, it has decreased at large since the mid-1990s. Second, the average annual growth rate of physical capital index has increased for meat product and fish product industry, The rate has been more higher for fish product industry than for meat product industry. Third, the average annual growth rate of labor index has decreased for both meat and fish products industries. Fourth, physical capital index has had no significant impact on constant exports for meat product industry, while labor index has had a significant impact on it. Fifth, physical capital index has had a significant impact on constant exports for fish product industry, while labor index has had no significant impact on it.

Centrality of Visual Product Aesthetics: The Relationships with Innovativeness and Consumer Independent Judgment Making (시각제품에 대한 심미적 성향: 혁신성과 독립적 의사결정과의 관계)

  • This study tested the validity of a three-factor model of the centrality of visual product aesthetics developed by Bloch, Brunel, and Arnold (2003) and explored the relationships between the centrality of visual product aesthetics and the relevant constructs. It was hypothesized that the path relationships including innovativeness and consumer independent judgment making are relevant constructs of the centrality of visual product aesthetics. Data were gathered by surveying university students in the Seoul metropolitan area (using convenience sampling) and 322 questionnaires were used in the statistical analysis. Correlation analysis, factor analysis, and regression analysis were conducted to analyze the data. The findings show the validity of the three factors (value, acumen, and response intensity) of the centrality of visual product aesthetics. Tests of the hypothesized path show that innovativeness influences the centrality of visual product aesthetics both directly and indirectly through consumer independent judgment making. Innovativeness positively influenced consumer independent judgment making and the three factors of the centrality of visual product aesthetics, whereas consumer independent judgment negatively influences the response intensity factor of the centrality of visual product aesthetics. The implications of these findings and suggestions for future study are also discussed.

The Effect of Consumer Involvement on the Clothing Product Performance Recognized by Consumer (소비자관여가 소비자가 인지한 의류제품의 성과에 미치는 영향)

  • Consumer involvement is one of the most important concepts in target marketing. Marketing managers seeking repeat business and a long term relationship with their consumers must understand the process underlying product evaluation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to find out the relationships between consumer involvement and product performance. Judgement sampling method through survey was utilized to collect the data and the subjects were 614 university students. Factor analysis, reliability test, and regression were used to analyze the data. The research results showed that there were three dimensions of product performance, so called, ‘aesthetic’, ‘utilitarian’, and ‘socio-interactive’. Consumer involvement was positively related to all dimensions of product performance. Understanding of the relationship between consumer involvement and product performance would contribute to build useful marketing strategies.

Semi-empirical model to determine pre- and post-neutron fission product yields and neutron multiplicity

  • Post-neutron emission fission product mass distributions are calculated by using pre-neutron emission fission product yields (FPYs) and neutron multiplicity. A semi-empirical model is used to calculate the pre-neutron FPY, first. Then the neutron multiplicity for each fission fragment mass is used to convert the pre-neutron FPY to the post-neutron FPY. In doing so, assumptions are made for the probability for a pre-emission fission fragment with a mass number A* to decay to a post-emission fragment with a mass number A. The resulting post-neutron FPYs are compared with the data available. The systems where the experimental data of not only the pre- and post-neutron FPY but also neutron multiplicity are available are the thermal neutron-induced fission of 233U, 235U and 239Pu. Thus, we applied the model calculations to these systems and compared the calculation results with those from the GEF and the data from the ENDF and the EXFOR libraries. Both the pre- and post-neutron fission product mass distributions calculated by using the semi-empirical model and the neutron multiplicity reproduce the overall features of the experimental data.

Differences in Perceived Financial Risk according to Price Discounts and Product Types of Consumers in Korea and Thailand

  • Purpose - The objective of this study is to investigate the differences and interaction effects on the perceived financial risk between Korean and Thai consumers according to the types of product(utilitarian and hedonic) and price discount (bundle and 50%off). Research design, Data and Methodology - This paper sets up 6 research subjects. Data collection was carried out in Korea and Thailand. Data was made of 154 Korean and 147 Thai consumers. As for the independent variables for this study, consumer types are composed of Korean and Thai consumers, price discount types were bundle(1+1) and 50% off price, and product types consist of utilitarian and hedonic product. The dependent variable is perceived as a financial risk. Each question is measured as a Likert-type five-point scale. Results - According to the price discount and product type, perceived financial risk of Thai consumers is confirmed to be a larger one than that of Korean consumers. Also, there are interaction effects in the perceived financial risk. Conclusion - Our findings can be used as useful information for global retail markets as marketing strategies in future Korean enterprise through a comparative study on Korean and Thai consumers.
