Research on the Influences of New Product Design and New Product Development Process Management on New Product Development Performance in Taiwan's Industries

  • This study aims to probe into the influence of new product design and new product development process management on development performance. The research finding demonstrates that product design reveals positive and significant influence on new product development performance. Through statistical analysis, this study finds that companies in Taiwan value new product design. When companies value it more, they tend to have better new product development performance. With regard to the relation between new product development process management and new product development performance, the empirical results demonstrate that companies would pay more attention on new product development process management. With regard to new product idea and assessment, concept design and development, product function test and mass production in the market, through statistical analysis, this study finds that companies that value process management of new product development tend to have better new product development performance. As to the influence of new product design and new product process management on new product development performance, statistical analysis result demonstrates that the integration between new product design valued by companies in Taiwan and development process management would lead to significantly positive influence on new product development performance of the companies.

  • The current market preassure of least environmental effects of products needs companies to consider whole life cycle of their products during their design phase. To support the integrated and collaborative development of the products, this paper proposed product data model for extended Product Data Managemen (PDM) that can support integrated design of product, manufacturing process, and customer services, based on the consistent and comprehensive PDM databases. The product data model enables design, manufacturing, and service engineers to express their products and services efficiently, with sharing consistent product data, engineering changes, and both economical and environmental evaluations on their design alternatives. The product data model was implemented with a prototype PDM system, and validated through an example product. The result shows that the PDM based on the proposed product data model can support the integrated design for products, manufacturing process, and customer services, and provide an environment of collaborative product development for design, manufacturing and service engineers.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study user's involvement in new product development (NPD). It seeks to identify the factors involving user and design practices in the design process of new product development. A survey was conducted on 20 respondents consisting of designers involved in product development from various industries. The study focused on the early activities of the product design process which is called product specification. The analysis performed considers the importance of involving users in design decision. The outcome of this research is the significance of involving users and its effect on product development activities. The research also provides a model for an integrated user, designer and product knowledge activity in the product development process.

  • This paper describes a step-by-step method to minimize design iterations in a process of product design change. In the design process, two components are coupled if a change of a component can require the other components change, and design iterations are generated by the coupling. The design iteration is one of main factors that increase design effort. In this study, three matrices are used to solve the design iteration of automatic transmission lever, Requirement-Engineering matrix, Engineering-Components matrix, and DSM(Design Structure Matrix). Firstly, with the DSM, the product architecture and conceptual design process are proposed from product function analysis. Secondly, with the QFD, the Requirement-Engineering matrix and Engineering-Components matrix present the relationship among customer requirements, engineering issues, and product components.   • The necessity of imformation on product design process is increased in recently years, because a product can be called a mass of information and becomes more complex as long as technology is developed. But the present product development method is like a relay race. In this sequential process, information is transferred from one department to other departments like \"over the wall\". And communication gaps among departments are generated, so imformation cannot be controlled very well. Therefore it is needed to innovate the design process. The information system proposedin this study is an application software which can be useful for integrated product design process. It has been developed primarily for use in IBN PC and windows environment. It comprises four functional modules; functions of handing the overall project information (document, ideaskech, rendering, drawing); functions of decision making production problems in design project process; functions of groupware which can link with other departments; functions of comprehensive database with production.roduction.

  • In this study, an overall product design process will be presented by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) and robust design. From the conceptual design stage, the logical methods are used to select the appropriate concepts satisfying the customer requirements and the other conditions. The next phase is the embodiment design phase in which the deterministic and robust design approach are used to obtain the improvement in product design. Typically, this approach is applied for developing the simple bookshelf design. The results show the efficient approach which can be supported to develop the new product.

  • Small and medium enterprises have various problems that is the distributed process state, the method of receipt from custom, documentation change and so on related to the existing product design process. For that reason they require systematic analysis and smooth progress f3r each product design process. The solution is in this issue development of design management system far collaborative engineering. The aim of this system is to analyze the wrong existing process and to standardize product design process. Since this system is a server on web based Database with web identification, the client can overcome the limit of time, place and resource duplication. As a result product design process gets the greatest of efficiency in the various aspects.

The Mediating Effects of the Process Design Capability and Product Interior Design Capability on the Relationship between SMEs' External Information Network Diversity and Their New Technology Development Capability

  • New technology development capability plays a key role in making small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) increase their innovation performance, such as in product or process innovation. To examine the influencing factors of SMEs' new technology development capability, this study empirically analyzes the mediating effects of SMEs' process design capability and product interior design capability on the positive association between their external information network diversity and new technology development capability. This study performs the ordinary least squares regression on a sample of 2,000 South Korean SMEs. Results reveal that SMEs' process design capability fully mediates, and product interior design capability partially mediates the positive association between the external information network diversity and new technology development capability.

자연스러운 동작 분석을 통한 냉장고 Half Guard 조립체의 인간공학적 개선 (An Analysis of Natural Motion for Product Design : Refrigerator Half Guard Installation Part Design)

  • Ergonomic product design considering users' natural use motion is of importance to improve the usability and satisfaction of a product. A five-step process of product design was developed in the present study by measuring and analyzing users' natural product-use motion with a motion capture system. The developed process was applied to ergonomic design improvement of a half guard installation part of refrigerator; new guard designs (diagonal and arc shape) were developed with the process and evaluated in terms of validity during the development as two measures (task satisfaction and similarity of natural motion). According to the evaluation result, the satisfaction at putting in- and out-task of new guard designs ($6.3{\pm}0.5$ points) was significantly higher than that of existing guard designs ($3.3{\pm}1.0$ points); the difference between natural motion and product-use motion in new guard designs ($1.0{\pm}0.3cm$) was significantly less than that of existing guard designs ($2.0{\pm}0.2cm$). The proposed process of natural motion analysis and product design is applicable to ergonomic product design and evaluation.

  • This paper presents a design methodology for developing a new push scooter. A case study is clone with effective planning processes to ensure the product quality under the different phases of a product design process. Parametric model based design process simulation and optimization is implemented by using ANSYS application tool. The relationship matrix and decision matrix are drawn by using several methods. The simulation results for deterministic design and robust design are compared. This entire design process phase can support the design and quality improvements for a new product development.
