  • This paper introduces the five-step methodology for identifying information needs and assessing instrument availability during the course of severe accidents in nuclear power plants. The methodology is applied to the Yonggwang (YGN) 3&4 to shed light on accident management. It constructs three safety objective trees to prevent the reactor vessel failure, to prevent the containment failure, and to mitigate the fission product release from the containment. The study assesses information needs and instrument availability under severe conditions for preventing the reactor vessel failure of YGN 3&4, and recommends additional instrument that m8y prove to be of vital importance in managing the accident.

  • Acrolein (ACR) is a well-known carbonyl toxin produced by lipid peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which is involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). In Alzheimer's brain, ACR was found to be elevated in hippocampus and temporal cortex where oxidative stress is high. In this study, we evaluated oxidative modification of cytochrome c occurring after incubation with ACR. When cytochrome c was incubated with ACR, protein aggregation increased in a dose-dependent manner. The formation of carbonyl compounds and the release of iron were obtained in ACR-treated cytochrome c. Reactive oxygen species scavengers and iron specific chelator inhibited the ACR-mediated cytochrome c modification and carbonyl compound formation. Our data demonstrate that oxidative damage of cytochrome c by ACR might induce disruption of cyotochrome c structure and iron mishandling as a contributing factor to the pathology of AD.

  • Reliable prediction of nuclear fuel rod behavior of nuclear power reactors constitutes a basic demand for steady-state calculations, design purposes, and fuel performance assessment. Perfect design of fuel rods as the first barrier against fission product release is very important. Simulation of fuel rod performance with a code or software is one of the fuel rod design steps. In this study, a software program called MARCODE is developed in MATLAB environment that can analyze the temperature distribution, gap conductance value, and fuel and clad displacement in both solid and annular fuel rods. With a comparison of the maximum fuel temperature, fuel average temperature, fuel surface temperature, and gap conductance in solid and annular fuel, the effects of a central hole on the fuel temperature distribution are investigated.

  • Pay off reel is the device to release in the form of coil. Every time the device becomes a hassle to exchange, each diameter of two forms has been applied to the coil reel. There is the change of reel diameter of the sleeve portion to be the part of segment geometry. This unit is conducting on 3-dimensional modeling design. The basic strength and deformation of the device could be checked in advance by the basis of 3-d modeling data to perform simulations. The production of each part can be completed and assembled. Conducted for the final product which is tested and measured, all items are satisfied within the limits of targets. Due to the development of this device, the efficiency on operations can be increased and the production time becomes shortened.

  • In continuing our search for biologically active compounds from Korean Compositae medicinal plants, we investigated the constituents of the aerial parts of Lactuca indica L. and isolated a phenylpropanoid derivative from its MeOH extract. The chemical structure was characterized by spectroscopic methods, including 1D and 2D NMR to be di-E-caffeoyl-meso-tartaric acid (1). Compound 1 was isolated for the first time from this plant. In this paper, we suggest that the NMR assignment at C-2 of (+)-taraxafolin-B should be corrected. In the human HBV-transfected liver cell line HepG2.2.15, the compound 1 effectively reduced HBV DNA level in the release of mature HBV particles from HepG2.2.15 cultivation.

  • Beauveria bassiana, one of the most common entomopathogenic fungi, has been isolated, pre defined and characterized in-house from soil of tea cultivation area. Experiments have been performed to verify the presence of chitinase as intracellular metabolite and its release as extracellular product rendering the spores with biopesticide activity. Although there are many responsible enzymes for the pest killer action of B. bassiana, binding property of chitinase depending on presence as well as absence of serine supplemented in the media has been studied with respect to the production and kinetics. A programmed investigation conclusively indicates that the isolated spore (hyphae) of B. bassiana has been metabolically enriched with the enzyme chitinase in presence of an externally added amino acid serine with its inhibitory kinetics.

  • Eucommiae Cortex (EC), bark of Eucommia ulmoides, has been known as a traditional medicine to regulate hypertension and immune system. Because silk of gum in the EC blocks the release of active ingredients, EC generally has been utilized after processing with carbonization or salt-water to breakdown it. This study aimed to investigate the differences of non-processed EC and processed EC on antioxidant and anticancer properties. Antioxidant capacity was assessed by measuring the content of total polyphenols, reducing power, and ABTS radical scavenging effect. And anticancer effects were examined by evaluating the viability of pancreatic cancer cells and wound healing ability. The results demonstrated that processed EC contained more content of polyphenols and exhibited more potent reducing power and radical scavenging effect than non-processed EC. In addition, processed EC more efficiently inhibited proliferation and migration of pancreatic cancer cells. These results suggest that processing of medicinal plants can improve the biological properties such as antioxidant or anticancer activity, which may lead to the development of herbal medicine treatment technology.

  • Recently, public and national institutions establish secure system with installed and operational by IT products for security. They required the Common Criteria for assurance of IT products. However, many company hard to decide when IT products release and develop investment because of cost and spend-time problem. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze domestic and international IT products evaluation services, and proposes simplification IT products evaluation service compared with previous services.

  • Dysregulation of inflammation induced by noninfectious stress conditions, such as nutrient deprivation, causes tissue damage and intestinal permeability, resulting in the development of inflammatory bowel diseases. We studied the effect of autophagy on cytokine secretion related to intestinal permeability under nutrient deprivation. Autophagy removes NLRP3 inflammasomes via ubiquitin-mediated degradation under starvation. When autophagy was inhibited, starvation-induced NLRP3 inflammasomes and their product, IL-1β, were significantly enhanced. A prolonged nutrient deprivation resulted in an increased epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), leading to intestinal permeability. Under nutrient deprivation, IL-17E/25, which is secreted by IL-1β, demolished the intestinal epithelial barrier. Our results suggest that an upregulation of autophagy maintains the intestinal barrier by suppressing the activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes and the release of their products, including pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-17E/25, under nutrient deprivation.
