Research on the Influences of New Product Design and New Product Development Process Management on New Product Development Performance in Taiwan's Industries

  • This study aims to probe into the influence of new product design and new product development process management on development performance. The research finding demonstrates that product design reveals positive and significant influence on new product development performance. Through statistical analysis, this study finds that companies in Taiwan value new product design. When companies value it more, they tend to have better new product development performance. With regard to the relation between new product development process management and new product development performance, the empirical results demonstrate that companies would pay more attention on new product development process management. With regard to new product idea and assessment, concept design and development, product function test and mass production in the market, through statistical analysis, this study finds that companies that value process management of new product development tend to have better new product development performance. As to the influence of new product design and new product process management on new product development performance, statistical analysis result demonstrates that the integration between new product design valued by companies in Taiwan and development process management would lead to significantly positive influence on new product development performance of the companies.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study user's involvement in new product development (NPD). It seeks to identify the factors involving user and design practices in the design process of new product development. A survey was conducted on 20 respondents consisting of designers involved in product development from various industries. The study focused on the early activities of the product design process which is called product specification. The analysis performed considers the importance of involving users in design decision. The outcome of this research is the significance of involving users and its effect on product development activities. The research also provides a model for an integrated user, designer and product knowledge activity in the product development process.

  • In order to keep and increase a competitive potential, industrial enterprises have to reduce their costs for product development as well as shorten lead time in product development processes. Moreover they have to respond to market factors and conditions such as increasing demands for functionality and individuality of products, short product life cycles, high pressure on prices and time to market. The improved functional requirement in connection with high time and cost pressure lead to high risk in product development. Technological fine improvements in connection with high time and cost pressure lead to high development risk. To cope with these challenges many enterprises have to collaborate globally. The collaborative engineering in product development is aimed to create distributed collaborative corporations and to facilitate the management of design conflicts. This paper provides a methodology for analyzing collaborative design process as well as the tools and the framework to support collaborative product development. The methodology can identify the interdependences among design tasks and teams. The tools and framework are implemented to facilitate the management of product development process.

The Mediating Effects of the Process Design Capability and Product Interior Design Capability on the Relationship between SMEs' External Information Network Diversity and Their New Technology Development Capability

  • New technology development capability plays a key role in making small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) increase their innovation performance, such as in product or process innovation. To examine the influencing factors of SMEs' new technology development capability, this study empirically analyzes the mediating effects of SMEs' process design capability and product interior design capability on the positive association between their external information network diversity and new technology development capability. This study performs the ordinary least squares regression on a sample of 2,000 South Korean SMEs. Results reveal that SMEs' process design capability fully mediates, and product interior design capability partially mediates the positive association between the external information network diversity and new technology development capability.

제품, 공정, 서비스 통합 설계를 지원하는 제품자료모델 (Product Data Model for Supporting Integrated Product, Process, and Service Design)

  • The current market preassure of least environmental effects of products needs companies to consider whole life cycle of their products during their design phase. To support the integrated and collaborative development of the products, this paper proposed product data model for extended Product Data Managemen (PDM) that can support integrated design of product, manufacturing process, and customer services, based on the consistent and comprehensive PDM databases. The product data model enables design, manufacturing, and service engineers to express their products and services efficiently, with sharing consistent product data, engineering changes, and both economical and environmental evaluations on their design alternatives. The product data model was implemented with a prototype PDM system, and validated through an example product. The result shows that the PDM based on the proposed product data model can support the integrated design for products, manufacturing process, and customer services, and provide an environment of collaborative product development for design, manufacturing and service engineers.

  • This paper presents a design methodology for developing a new push scooter. A case study is clone with effective planning processes to ensure the product quality under the different phases of a product design process. Parametric model based design process simulation and optimization is implemented by using ANSYS application tool. The relationship matrix and decision matrix are drawn by using several methods. The simulation results for deterministic design and robust design are compared. This entire design process phase can support the design and quality improvements for a new product development.

Improving Development Process for Product Safety

  • In designing and evaluating a new product, the company needs to give thought to the entire spectrum of produceability, usability, and ultimate reliability, as well as safety of users. For each design review(DR) stage, a formal, systematic, documented review and evaluation of a product design is conducted to assure that the product is safe and reliable, that costs and materials have been optimized, and that the design complies with its specifications and requirements. This paper presents how to improve development process for product's safety and reliability. The process requires gathering the appropriate information, determining the limits of the product, estimating risk associated with the task-hazard combinations, and reducing risk according to a prioritized procedure.

서비스디자인 프로세스를 활용한 UX중심 오피스 전화기 디자인개발 프로세스 연구 (A Study on UX-centered Smart Office Phone Design Development Process Using Service Design Process)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 서비스디자인 프로세스를 활용한 제품디자인 개발 프로세스를 체계화하여 실무에서 활용할 수 있도록 '서비스디자인 방법론을 활용한 제품디자인 개발 프로세스'를 제안하는 데 목적을 두고 연구를 진행하였다. 일반 가정용 전화기에 비해 스마트화 되어가는 사무환경을 고려한 오피스 전화기에 대한 사용성(Usability) 연구가 부족한 상황에서, 이 연구를 통해 단순 제품 개발이 아닌 제품기반 서비스디자인적 관점으로 확장하여 스마트 사무환경에서의 오피스 전화기 제품디자인을 통해 새로운 사용자 경험 가치 제공과 서비스 연계 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 본 연구의 방법으로는 서비스디자인 프로세스를 활용하여 UX중심의 사용자 니즈 도출 및 사용자 경험 가치를 구현하는 제품디자인 개발에 중점을 두었다. 특히, 제품 개발과정에서 사용자 니즈와 경험 가치 요소를 좀 더 체계적으로 도출하고, 제품기반 서비스가 융합된 아이디어를 발굴하기 위해 서비스디자인 프로세스를 접목하였다. 이를 위해 서비스디자인 분야에서 널리 활용되고 있는 '더블 다이아몬드 디자인 프로세스 모델'을 채택하였다. 또한 실제 사용자 및 다양한 분야의 인력들이 참여하는 Work Flow를 통해 사용성 개선방안, 사용자 경험(UX) 가치 요소 및 제품-서비스 연계 아이디어를 도출할 수 있도록 제품디자인 개발 프로세스를 구축하였다. 본 연구의 결과로서, 더블 다이아몬드 디자인 프로세스에 기반하여 '문제발견(Discover)' 정보수집 단계에서는 국내외 오피스 전화기 시장을 중심으로 디자인 트렌드를 파악하였다. '정의(Define)' 분석·도출 단계에서는 사용자 관찰 및 인터뷰, 사용성 설문조사를 통해 사용자 니즈를 분석하고, 디자인 요구조건 및 사용자 경험 이슈를 도출하였다. 사용자 유형 분석을 통해 퍼소나(Persona)를 설정하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 사용자 시나리오를 제시하였다. '발전(Develop)' 발전·개발 단계에서는 디자인 구체화를 위한 아이디어 워크숍과 콘셉트 렌더링을 진행하였으며, 사내 다양한 분야의 인력이 참여하여 디자인 선호도 및 사용성 개선방안을 도출하여 디자인 방향을 설정하였다. '전달(Deliver)' 개선·프로토타입 개발·평가 단계에서는 디자인 프로토타입 목업을 제작하여 사외 디자인전문가 자문을 통한 디자인 및 사용성 평가를 진행하였다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 기존의 제품디자인 개발 프로세스와 서비스디자인 프로세스가 접목된 제품디자인 개발 프로세스 모델을 구축하였다는데 의의가 있다. 궁극적으로 향후 I사 제품이 서비스 융합을 통해서 사용자 경험 가치를 구현하고, 이를 통해 새로운 비즈니스 모델을 만들어갈 수 있도록 서비스디자인기반 제품디자인 개발 프로세스를 제안하였다.

제품디자인을 위한 실무적 관리프로세스 제안 (A Proposal of Practical Management Process for Product Design)

  • 최근 제품개발의 추세는 디자인전문회사가 클라이언트와 협력하여 초기 제품기획단계부터 최종생산까지의 모든 과정을 함께 진행하는 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 최근의 추세에 맞도록 개선된 실무적 관리 프로세스를 제시하기로 한다. 기존의 프로세스들은 제품디자인 개발과정을 시장조사부터 디자인, 설계, 생산 등의 단계로 요약하여 언급해 왔기 때문에 최근의 추세에 맞추기 위해서는 제품디자인 개발의 모든 단계들을 설명하는 확대된 프로세스가 필요하다. 제품디자인 개발의 모든 과정은 초기 Initial Meeting의 단계에서 출발하여 계약, Kick-Off Meeting, 시장조사, 디자인컨셉 설정, Idea Sketch, Rendering 디자인 도면, 디자인 목업, 디자인 매뉴얼, 기구 설계, ES 목업, 금형 설계 및 제작, 시 사출, 양산, 특허 출원까지의 프로세스들을 포함한다. 따라서, 하나의 제품디자인개발 프로세스를 진행하고 관리하기 위해서는 모든 단계들에 대한 충분한 이해 및 지식이 있어야 한다. 본 프로세스의 장점은 1)제품개발과정을 이해하고, 2)최종디자인과 양산제품이 일치하고, 3)시장조사로 정확한 디자인정보를 수집하고, 4)완성도 높은 제품디자인을 제시하는 데 있다. 본 실무적 관리프로세스는 제품디자인 개발과 관련된 모든 과정들을 분석함으로써 개선된 체계를 제안하며, 제품디자인개발의 다양한 환경 속에서 응용될 수 있다.

PDM 소프트웨어와 3D 프린팅을 활용한 제품개발 수업 운영 사례 (Product Development Class using Product Data Management Software and 3D Printing)

  • This paper proposes a framework of engineering education for product development processes based on product data management (PDM) software and 3D printing. The PDM software supports the product development process-oriented educational coursework, collaborative team projects and project-based learning environment. The 3D printing supports the prototyping step in the product development process and helps participants consider physical realization of their designs during the product design and development phases. The framework was implemented in an introductory course for engineering students to product design and development, and author found that it is important to support rich communication among participants including lecturers, teaching assistants and students to enhance the quality of education and to overcome the burden of learning various computer-aided tools and 3D printing techniques needed for the framework.
