  • Product opportunity analysis in product planning is to analyze the feasibility for success over the detail product concept, and to grasp the new possible market based on exploring the trends of market and product itself. Therefore, the correct analysis and insight with various data of product and market is needed for product opportunity analysis. As product environment changes rapidly, it is especially important to collect more plentiful informations, and to put these information to practical use pertinently. It is consequently indispensible to clarify the types of information to be needed and to construct product database. However, there has no meaning to gather simple information which is lying here and there. Product database has to be systematically organized and each product information is to be transformed into contextual one. This study clarifies a conceptual framework of product design database based on product attributes and develops prototype of product database for product planning. Case study of camera is exemplified for analyzing the product trends and exploring product opportunity with developed product database.

  • A product family design has received much attention over the last several decades, since a product family-based development shortens lead-times and reduces cost, as well as increases efficiency and effectiveness of the product realization process. It is challenging work, however, to define the product family design in the heterogeneous product development environments, due to myriads of products related information described in different ways across products in any companies. In this paper, we provided a way of defining product family design framework using formal concept analysis and ontology language. Based on this, the specific product family can be derived by ontological reasoning, and the new product concept can be also expanded in the framework. The proposed framework is formalized using OWL (Web Ontology Language) and implemented in $Prot{\acute{e}}g{\acute{e}}$. Actual product family design algorithm is carried out using FaCT++ engine, a plug-in to $Prot{\acute{e}}g{\acute{e}}$, and the benefits of the proposed method are also demonstrated through a case study.

  • The purpose of the study was to provide useful implications for management of dessert cafe by discovering selection attributes for product satisfaction and long-term orientation. Using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 220 Version, the collected data from customers of dessert cafe in Seoul and metropolitan areas were analyzed for frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and covariance structure analysis. As results of hypothesis verification, firstly, service standard and product diversity had a significant effect on product satisfaction of dessert cafe. Secondly, tastes and nutrients influenced positively long-term orientation of dessert cafe. Meanwhile, service standard, mood, and product diversity did not have a significant effect on long-term orientation. Thirdly, product satisfaction affected positively long-term orientation. The results of the study provided useful implications for management of dessert cafe.

  • In recent years, the diminishing of operation and maintenance cost using advanced maintenance technology is attracting many companies' attention. Especially, the heavy machinery industry regards it as a crucial problem since a failure of heavy machinery requires high cost and long downtime. To improve the current maintenance process, the heavy machinery industry tries to develop a methodology to predict failure in advance and to find its causes using usage data. A better analysis of failure causes requires more data so that various kinds of sensor are attached to machines and abundant amount of product usage data is collected through the sensor network. However, the systemic analysis of the collected product usage data is still in its infant stage. Many previous works have focused on failure occurrence as statistical data for reliability analysis. There have been less works to apply product usage data into root cause analysis of product failure. The product usage data collected while failures occur should be considered failure cause analysis. To do this, this study proposes a methodology to apply product usage data into failure cause analysis. The proposed methodology in this study is composed of several steps to transform product usage into failure causes. Various statistical analysis combined with product usage data such as multinomial logistic regression, T-test, and so on are used for the root cause analysis. The proposed methodology is applied to field data coming from operated locomotive and the analysis result shows its effectiveness.

  • This study assessed and analysed a result of a product design experiment through Product Data Analytics (PDA), to find reasons for failure of some projects in the experiment. PDA is a computer-based data analysis that uses Product Data Management (PDM) databases as its operational databases. The study examines 20 product design projects in the experiment, which are prepared to follow same product development process by using an identical PDM system. The design result in the PDM database is assessed and analysed by On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) and data mining tools in PDA. The assesment and analysis reveals the lateness in creation of 3D CAD models as the main reason of the failure.

  • This study proposes a methodology to analyse social networks among participating design engineers during product development projects. The proposed methodology enables product development managers or the participating design engineers to make a proper decision on product development considering the performance of participating design engineers. It considers a product development environment where an integrated product data management (PDM) system manages the product development data and associated product development processes consistently in its database, and all the design engineers share the product development data in the PDM database for their activities in the product development project. It provides a novel approach to build social networks among design engineers from an operational product development data in the PDM database without surveys or monitoring participating engineers. It automatically generates social networks among the design engineers from the product data and relationships specified by the participants during the design activities. It allows analysts to gather operational data for their analysis without additional efforts for understanding complex and unstructured product development processes. This study also provides a set of measures to evaluate the social networks. It will show the role and efficiency of each design engineers in the social network. To show the feasibility of the approach, it suggests an architecture of social network analysis (SNA) system and implemented it with a research-purpose PDM system and R, a statistical software system. A product configuration management process with synthetical example data is applied to the SNA system and it shows that the approach enables analysts to evaluate current position of design engineers in their social networks.

  • Platform-based product family design is recognized as an effective method to satisfy the mass customization which is a current market trend. In order to design platform-based product family successfully, it is the key work to define a good product platform, which is to identify the common modules that will be shared among the product family. In this paper the clustering analysis using dendrogram is proposed to capture the common modules of the platform. The clustering variables regarding both marketing and engineering sides are derived from the view point of top-down product development. A case study of a cordless drill/drive product family is presented to illustrate the feasibility and validity of the overall procedure developed in this research.

  • In this study, graph product rules are applied to the dynamic analysis of regular skeletal structures. Graph product rules have recently been utilized in structural mechanics as a powerful tool for eigensolution of symmetric and regular skeletal structures. A structure is called regular if its model is a graph product. In the first part of this paper, the formulation of time history dynamic analysis of regular structures under seismic excitation is derived using graph product rules. This formulation can generally be utilized for efficient linear elastic dynamic analysis using vibration modes. The second part comprises of random vibration analysis of regular skeletal structures via canonical forms and closed-form eigensolution of matrices containing special patterns for symmetric structures. In this part, the formulations are developed for dynamic analysis of structures subjected to random seismic excitation in frequency domain. In all the proposed methods, eigensolution of the problems is achieved with less computational effort due to incorporating graph product rules and canonical forms for symmetric and cyclically symmetric structures.
