  • Parallel implementation and performance assessment of the grid assembly in a structured chimera grid approach is studied. The grid assembly process, involving hole cutting and searching donor, is parallelized on the PC cluster. A message passing programming model based on the MPI library is implemented using the single program multiple data(SPMD) paradigm. The coarse-grained communication is optimized with the minimized memory allocation because that the parallel grid assembly can access the decomposed geometry data in other processors by only message passing in the distributed memory system such as a PC cluster. The grid assembly workload is based on the static load balancing tied to flow solver. A goal of this work is a development of parallelized grid assembly that is suited for handling multiple moving body problems with large grid size.

오일시일의 동적거동에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Dynamic Behaviour of Oil Seals)

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on the dynamic behaviour of rubber oil seals when the interferences between the shaft and the seal lip as well as the dynamic eccentricities are present. The micro-separation of the sealing gap was observed with the aid of an image processing apparatus. The temperature of the seal lip edge, friction torque and the dynamic sealing gap profile are experimentally investigated for the initial interference and the shaft eccentricity. The data was simultaneously measured under the operation conditions. Experimental results show that, as the shaft speed is increased, the leakage of sealed fluids is increasing for a certain range of shaft speeds. The test data indicates that the shaft eccentricity clearly produces the gap separation between the shaft and the seal lip which is unable to follow the radial displacement of shaft as the shaft speed increases.

  • A polishing method using magnetorheological (MR) fluid has been developed as a new precision technique to obtain a fine surface. The process uses a MR fluid that consists of magnetic carbonyl iron (CI) particles, nonmagnetic polishing abrasives, water and stabilizers. But the CI particles in MR fluids cause a severe corrosion problem. When coated with Xanthan gum, the CI particles showed long-term stability in corrosive aqueous environment. The surface roughness obtained from the MR polishing process was evaluated. A series of experiments were performed on fused silica glass using prepared slurries and various process conditions, including different polishing times. Outstanding surface roughness of Ra=2.27nm was obtained on the fused silica glass. The present polishing method could be used to produce ultra-precision micro parts.

  • The discrete element method is a numerical model capable of describing the mechanical behaviour of assemblies of discs and spheres. The method is based on the use of an explicit numerical scheme in which the interaction of the particles is monitored contact by contact and the motion of the particles modelled particle by particle. In this paper, A two-dimensional model for computing contacts and motions of granular particles of unform, inelasticity is presented. And, code is developed. The primary aim of this paper is to approv computational result of continuum alaysis which is on processing. The end of this paper, that code is tested with several examples.

  • Thermocapillary convection is a surface tension driven flow due to a temperature gradient along an interface. It occurs during a crystal-growth process and therefore understanding the convection is important to material processing in microgravity. Although modelling of the float-zone crystal-growth process has been of interest for a few decades, most studies of liquid bridges assumed non-deformable flat surfaces. In reality, the surface profile, g(t,z), is unknown and should be obtained as a solution to the coupled transport equations along with the surface force balance. Here we report on a numerical study of axisymmetric thermocapillary convection in liquid bridges with deformable surfaces. The interface is determined as part of the complete solution. The influence of the capillary number (Ca), Reynolds number (Re), Prandtl number (Pr) and aspect ratio(Ar) on the dynamics is explored.

CFD Study on Particle Effect and Erosion in the Axial Compressor Blades and Shroud of Turbomachinery

  • Fly ash enters axial compressor when a turbomachinery is operated in an adverse environment. We have numerically investigated erosion of the blade and shroud in the turbulent compressor passage flow under the influence of gas-particle two-phase interaction. There have appeared quasi-three dimensional calculations on this subject but not the complete three-dimensional gas-particle interaction as done in the present work. Lagrangian particle tracing technique is used on the base of parallel processing for efficient calculation. Accuracy of the present code is tested using the benchmark lPL nozzle. In the DFVLR compressor blades, we have shown that a large number of particles passing through the tip clearance make impact on the blade tip and on the shroud. Higher degree of erosion is resulted by the heavier particles due to the centrifugal force.

  • A new design approach for a delicate treatment of complex geometries such as a wing/body configuration is arranged using overset mesh technique under large scale computing environment for turbulent viscous flow. Various pre- and post-processing techniques which are required of overset flow analysis and sensitivity analysis codes are discussed for design optimization problems based on gradient based optimization method (GBOM). The overset flow analysis code is validated by comparing with the experimental data of a wing/body configuration (DLR-F4) from the 1st Drag Prediction Workshop (DPW-I). In order to examine the applicability of the present design tools, careful design works for the drag minimization problem of a wing/body configuration are carried out by using the developed aerodynamic shape optimization tools for the viscous flow over multiple-body aircraft geometries.

  • In this paper development of on-line data visualization program is described and some examples of data postprocessing are shown. The program is written in JAVA language and runs as a JAVA applet on the web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. Remote users can use the program to visualize and analyze their own flow data by accessing the program server through the internet and loading data files in proper formats from their local computers. This paper describes briefly about algorithms for data visualization, structure and available functions of the program, and web sever system. The mechanism of how the JAVA applet can access and process local data files and relevant coding techniques are explained as well. Also explained is what is required for the remote users and client computers to access the program on-line. Some visualization examples performed on a local computer are illustrated by accessing the server remotely.

  • CFD code that simulates stator-rotor interactions is developed applying parallel computing method. Modified Multi-Block Grid System which enhances perpendicularity in grid and is appropriate in parallel processing is introduced and Patched Algorithm is applied in sliding interface which is caused by movement of rotor. The experimental model in the turbo-machine is composed of 11 stators and 14 rotors. Analyses on two test cases which are one stator - one rotor model and three stators - four rotors model are performed. The results of the two cases have been compared with the experimental test data.
