  • As a class of materials, Ni-base superalloys are among the most difficult metal alloys to forge together with refractory metals and cobalt-base superalloys. The mechanical properties of Ni-base superalloys depend very much on grain size and the strengthening phases, $\gamma$' ($Ni_3$(Al,Ti)-type) and $\gamma$".($Ni_3$Nb-type). Especially, the control of grain size remains as a sole means for the control of mechanical properties. The grain size and distribution changes of the wrought superalloys during hot working and heat treatment are mainly controlled by the recrystallization and grain growth behaviors. In this presentation, prediction technology of grain size through the computer-aided process design, and numerical modeling for predicting the microstructure evolution of Ni-base superalloy during hot working were introduced. Also, some case studies were dealt with actual forming processes of Ni-base superalloys.

  • Nowadays, the trend to a lightweight design accelerates the use of advanced high strength steel (AHSS) in automotive industry. Springback phenomena is a hot issue in the sheet metal forming, especially bending process using AHSS. Several analytical methods for that have been proposed in recent years. Each of method has their advantages and disadvantages. There are only a few optimal solutions which can minimize the two objectives simultaneously. In this study, an effective method optimized the multi objective value. The method by the design of experiments(DOE) and artificial neural network(ANN) was presented to compensate springback of bending parts. This method was applied to L and V bending process. The effective method could be optimized to multiple object. It was confirmed that the proposed method was more efficient than traditional manual FEA procedure and the trial and error approach for springback compensation.

  • Magnesium alloys are used in electronic devices such as laptops due to their lightweight features as well as vibration absorption and electromagnetic shielding properties. However, the precision of electronics is limited by the large number of small and precise ribs, the cost-effective manufacture of which requires appropriate technology. Plate forging is an efficient manufacturing process that can address these challenges. In this study, plate forging of magnesium alloys was investigated specifically for the fabrication of laptop cover. The plate forging process with back-pressure was used for near-net shape formation. Finite element analysis was used to select appropriate variables for back-pressure formation to generate ribs of various sizes and shapes without defects. The reliability of the analysis was verified to manufacture the prototype. The effect of back-pressure can be verified via fabrication of prototypes as well as structure and forming analysis based on finite element method. The process design factor of back-pressure increases formability without defects of under-filling and flow-through. Moreover, the tensile strength was maintained even after high temperature plate forging at 370 ℃, and the elongation was improved.

  • Hot closed-forging process and the die used for forming an automotive flange were analyzed from the viewpoints of heat transfer, grain-flow lines, and stresses to obtain a forged product without defects such as surface cracks, laps, cold shots, and partial filling. The forging process including up-set, pre-forging, final forging and pressing forces was investigated using finite element analysis. The influence of the preform die and the ratio of the heights of the upper die to lower die on the forging process and die were investigated and a die shape ($10^{\circ}$ for the preform die, and 1.5:1 ratio for the final die) suitable to achieve successful forging was determined on the basis of a parametric study. All parametric design requirements such as strength, full filling, and a load limit of 13,000 KN were satisfied for this newly developed flange die. New dies and flanges were fabricated and investigated. Defects such as partial filling and surface cracks were not observed.

  • In the present study about extru-bending of angle product, the bending of extruded angle products with the $'\Lambda'$ section and 'ㄱ', section can be obtained using two extrusion billets by the hot metal extru-bending machine with the two punches moving in the different velocity. The bending curvature can be controlled by the different velocity of billets through the two-hole container. This paper describes simulations and experiments of extru-bending process that can make bending during extruding by the difference of stem velocities. And they are applied to two kinds of dies, that is, one of them is conical dies with symmetry $'\Lambda'$ section and the other one is conical dies with asymmetry 'ㄱ' section. The results of the forming simulation by $DEFORM^{TM}-3D$ and results of experiments show that the bending phenomenon at the die exit during extrusion can be obtained with two extrusion billet by the two stems moving in the different velocity. And it was known that it is possible to design the structure of conical cavity of extrusion dies and to control the curvature of product through the simulation and experiment of extru-bending process.

  • Thickness profiled blank is designed using optimization techniques for maximizing the bulged heights during the free bulging of Inconel 718. The thickness of the blank was described by the Bezier curve and the locations of the control points were used as the design variables for optimization. The maximization of the bulged heights within the limited strain range served as the objective function and constraints for optimization. The equivalent static loads method for non-linear static response structural optimization (ESLSO) was used and the result of the optimization revealed 22 increased bulged heights. A free bulging test using a blank with an optimized profile was conducted to verify the optimization process. The results were compared with those of numerical analysis in terms of bulged height and deformed shape.

  • A range of techniques have been being developed to remove the volatile organic compounds from paining processes. High temperature decomposition of harmful VOCs using arc plasma has recently been proposed, and this work analyzed the extreme hot process by computer-aided fluid dynamics prior to the reactor design. Numerical simulations utilized the conservation equations of mass and momentum. The simulation showed that the fluid flowed down along the inner surface of the centrifugal reactor by forming intensive spiral trajectories. Although the high temperature gas generated by plasma influences the bottom of the reactor, no heat transfer in radial direction appeared. The decomposition efficiency of a typical VOCs, toluene, was found to be a maximum of 67% across the reactor, which was similar to the value (approximately 70%) for the lab-scale test.
