Assessment of Input Impedance of an Axial Slot Antenna on a Sectoral Cylindrical Cavity Excited by Probe using Method of Moments

  • This paper presents the assessment of input impedance of a sectoral cylindrical cavity-backed slot antenna excited by a probe. This antenna is proposed to be an element of array that can be assembled to be the antenna for UHF TV broadcasting system. The integral equations are derived based on boundary conditions of the proposed structure and are expressed in terms of dyadic Green's functions and unknown currents. The unknown current densities are solved by the Method of Moments and the input impedance is derived subsequently. Numerical results show the variation of input impedance, for the specified dimensions of the antenna, as a function of frequency. This result is validated by measurement and found that the result is sufficiently accurate. The result from this study is useful for the design of a sectoral cylindrical cavity-backed slot antenna excited by a probe.

Approximation Equation for Broad Bandwidth Antenna Design Using CMMS

  • This paper proposes an approximate equation for broad bandwidth conditions in an antenna feeding probe design with a cylindrical magneto material structure (CMMS). The bandwidth calculation has been conducted according to the relation between the distance ($r_m$) between the magneto material and feeding probe, and the magneto material thickness ($t_m$) for a given ${\mu}_r$. The bandwidth of a proposed antenna with CMM feeding structure is improved about 182 %, when ${\mu}_r=20+j0.001$, in comparison with the bandwidth of an antenna without CMMS. The maximum error extent between the bandwidth calculated by the approximation equation and by the numerical calculation of the proposed antenna is about $\pm$3.2 % for ${\mu}_r=10+j0.001$. The approximation equation proposed in this study can solve the conventional problem of the complex process and the long time required for reiterative calculation, and allow simple and precise design with prediction. The accuracy of an approximated equation is compared with the results calculated by a commercial tool and verified by reasonable agreement between them.

A Broadband Microstrip Array Antenna for 3G Smart Antenna System Testbed

  • A compact and broadband $4\times1$ array antenna was developed for 3G smart antenna system testbed. The $4\times1$ uniform linear away antenna was designed to operate at 1.885 to 2.2GHz with a total bandwidth of 315MHz. The array elements were based on the novel broadband L-probe fed inverted hybrid E-H (LIEH) shaped microstrip patch, which offers 22% size reduction to the conventional rectangular microstrip patch antenna. For steering the antenna beam, a commercial variable attenuator (KAT1D04SA002), a variable phase shifter (KPH350SC00) with four units each, and the corporate 4-ways Wilkinson power divider which was fabricated in-house were integrated to form the beamforming feed network. The developed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 17.32% $(VSWR\leq1.5)$, 21.78% $(VSWR\leq2)$ with respect to center frequency 2.02GHz and with an achievable gain of 11.9dBi. The design antenna offer a broadband, compact and mobile solution for a 3G smart antenna testbed to fully characterized the IMT-2000 radio specifications and system performances.

PCS 기지국용 U-슬롯 어레이 안테나 설계 (Design of U-slot Array for OCS Base Station)

  • 본 논문에서는 PCS 기지국요 U-슬롯 어레이 안테나 설계가 실행 및 연구되었다. U-슬롯 안테나는 안테나의 부피가 작은 단층 형태이나 기생 패치를 이용하는 설계보다 더넓은 대역폭을 얻을 수 있으며 probe 급전의 경우에 17%이상의 대역폭을 얻을 수 있다. 설계도니 U-슬롯 어레이 안테나는 PCS 주파수 대역에서 12dB이상의 평균 이득과 안정적인 복사패턴을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서 U-슬롯 어레이 안테나의 설계를 통하여 PCS를 기지국용 안테나로의 이용 가능성을 제시하였다.

Broadband Characterization of Circularly Polarized Waveguide Antennas Using L-Shaped Probe

  • This paper introduces a technique to obtain the broadband characteristics of circularly polarized antennas using an L-shaped probe. A waveguide antenna is suitable for obtaining high gain and handling convenience in some applications; however, the asymmetrical structure of the L-shaped probe results in cross-polarization and frequency dependence on the field distribution of higher-order modes (HOM). In addition to the basic characteristics of a waveguide antenna with an L-shaped probe, the author discusses some techniques to reduce the HOM and cross-polarization. As a result, the 3-dB axial ratio (AR) is obtained with the fundamental mode even when the frequency is expanded to the region for HOM of TM. This reduction is mainly due to the cutoff structure to the TM mode around the short wall of the waveguide. Furthermore, some aperture modification techniques can reduce the cross-polarization in a wide range of angles in the radiation pattern. Such techniques and their mechanisms are discussed in this paper. The obtained performance shows that the proposed antennas have a wide range of angles of 3-dB AR in the radiation pattern, broadband characteristics in impedance and AR, and low variation in group velocity.

  • 프로브로 급전되는 마이크로스트립 안테나의 경우 급전점에서 급격히 변하는 전류 성분들이 존재하게 되는데, 이러한 성분들은 패치와 프로브 간의 전류의 연속성을 보장해 줄 수 있는 어태치먼트 모드를 사용하여 정확하게 표현될수 있다. 본 논문은 프로브 급전구조를 정확하게 모델링 할 수 있는 어태치먼트 모드를 사용하여 레이돔이 올려진 원형 마아이크로스트립 안테나를 해석하여 반사 계수 및 이득 변화의 영향을 분석하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 유한요소법(FEM. Finite Element Method)을 적용하여 coaxial feeding 구조를 가진 접지면 위에 부착된 직육면체형 세라믹 유전체 안테나를 해석하였다. 제안된 프로그램의 타당성을 검증하기 위하여 시제품을 제작하여 안테나 특성의 설험 값과 본 프로그램의 해석치를 비교하였으며 잘 일치함을 확인할 수 있었다. 이로써 본 유한요소 프로그램을 검증할 수 있었고, coaxial feeding 구조를 가진 접지면 위에 부착된 임의의 3차원 안테나 구조불 해석에도 확장이 가능함을 알 수 있었다.

Broadband Stacked Patch Antenna with Low VSWR and Low Cross-Polarization

  • A low cross-polarization broadband stacked patch antenna is proposed. By means of the stacked patch configuration and probe-fed strip feed technique, the VSWR 1.2:1 bandwidth of the patch antenna is enhanced to 22% from 804 MHz to 1,002 MHz, which outperforms the other available patch antennas (<10%). Furthermore, the antenna has a cross-polarization level of less than -20 dB and a gain level of about 9 dBi across the operating bandwidth. Simulation results are compared with the measurements, and a good agreement is observed.

근역장의 효율적 측정을 위한 광대역 프로브의 설계 및 제작 (Design and Fabrication of Wideband Probe for Efficient Near Field Measurement)

  • 본 논문에서는 근역장 측정에 사용되는 이중 리지드 도파관 구조 광대 역 프로브를 설계 및 제작하였다. 광대역 임피던스 정합을 위해 구형 도파관 내에 지수함수 테이퍼 리지를 삽입시킨 구조를 이용하여 구현하였다. 프로브는 $VSWR\leq2.2$를 기준으로 하한 주파수 8.2 GHz에서 상한 주파수 18 GHz까지 2.2:1의 대 역비를 갖는 광대역 특성을 보였으며 대역폭 내에 왜곡 없는 안정된 복사 패턴을 가지면서 4.5 dBi 이상의 이득을 가졌다. 설계한 광대역 프로브를 이용하여 근역장 측정 시스템을 적용하여 정확한 측정 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.
