  • Intramolecular excimer formation with the fluorescent probe 1,3-di(1-pyrenyl)propane (Py-3-Py) was used to investigate the effects of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 1-pentanol, 1-hexanol, 1-heptanol, 1-octanol, 1-nonanol and 1-decanol on the lateral diffusion of synaptosomal plasma membrane vesicles isolated from bovine cerebral cortex (SPMV). The n-alkanols increased the excimer to monomer fluorescence intensity ratio (I'/I) of Py-3-Py in the SPMV. In a dose-dependent manner, n-alkanols increased lateral diffusion of hydrocarbon region of bulk (inner+outer monolayers) SPMV lipid bilayers, and the potencies of n-alkanols up to l-nonanol increased with carbon chain length. It appears that the potencies in bilayer fluidization due to the lateral diffusion increase by 1 order of magnitude as the carbon chain length increases by two carbon atoms. The cut-off phenomenon was reached at 1-decanol, where further increase in hydrocarbon length resulted in a decrease in pharmacological activity.

  • Since the quality of final products is significantly affected by the homogeneity of powder mixture, the powder blending process has been regarded as one of the critical pharmaceutical unit processes, especially for solid dosage forms. Accordingly, the monitoring to determine a blending process' end-point based on a faster and more accurate in-line/on-line analysis has attracted enormous attentions recently. Among various analytical tools, NIR (near-infrared) spectroscopy has been extensively studied for PAT (process analytical technology) system due to its many advantages. In this study, NIR spectroscopy was employed with an optical fiber probe for the in-line monitoring of fluid-bed blending process. The position of the probe, the ratio of binary powder mixture, the powder size differential and the back-flush period of the shaking bag were examined as principal process parameters. During the blending process of lactose and mannitol powders, NIR spectra were collected, corrected, calibrated and analyzed using MSC and PLS method, respectively. The probe position was optimized. A reasonable end-point was predicted as 1,500 seconds based on 5% RSD value. As a consequence, it was demonstrated that the blending process using a fluid-bed processor has several advantages over other methods, and the application of NIRS with an optical fiber probe as PAT system for a fluid-bed blending process could be high feasible.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric errors, thermally-induced errors, and the deterioration of the machine tools. Geometric and thermal errors of machine tools should be measured and compensated to manufacture high quality products. In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. In this study, the compensation device and temperature-based algorithm have been presented in order to compensate thermal error of machine tools under the real-time. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses, a designed spherical ball artifact, and five gap sensors. In order to compensate thermal characteristics under several operating conditions, experiments performed with five gap sensors and manufactured compensation device on the horizontal machining center.

  • Parametric studies based on laboratory pilot tests were performed to investigate the relationships between electrical resistivity and properties of contaminated soils. Three kinds of sandy soils sampled and leachate from an industrial waste landfill were mired to model the contaminated soils. Electrical resistivity of soils was measured by using a simulated resistivity cone penetrometer probe. In the experiments. the electrical resistivity was observed by changing the water content, void ratio, unit weight, degree of saturation, and concentration of the leachate. The test results show that the electrical resistivity of soils depends largely on the water content and the electrical property of pore water rather than unit weight and types of soils.

This paper models of the thermal errors for error analysis and develops on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric error are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses and a designed spherical ball artifact (SBA). Experiments, performed with the developed measurement system, show that the system provides a high measuring accuracy, with repeatability of $\pm$2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in X, Y and Z directions. It is believed that the developed measurement system can be also applied to the machine tools with CNC controller. In addition, machining accuracy and product quality can be improved by using the developed measurement system when the spherical ball artifact is mounted on the modular fixture.

  • The high-temperature oxidation behavior of Cr-Mo steel AISI 4115 in air at different temperatures (600, 850, 950℃) for 120 min was studied by mass gain analysis, phase analysis (optical microscopy, electron probe micro-analysis, x-ray diffraction) and hardness measurement of each iron oxide-phase. The oxidation scales that formed on oxidation process consisted outer layer (Hematite), middle layer (Magnetite) and the inner layer (Chromite). In the case of 850 and 950℃, the oxidation mass gain per unit area of AISI 4115 steel increased according to the logarithmic rate as atmospheric pressure increased. Especially, It has been observed that with an increase in the atmospheric pressure at 600℃, the oxidation mass gain per unit area changed from a linear to logarithmic relationship.

  • The arrangement of encapsulated Ar atoms in the molecular-dimensioned cavities of fully dehydrated zeolite A of unit-cell composition $Cs_3Na_8HSi_{12}Al_{12}O_{48}$ ($Cs_3$-A) has been studied crystallographically to probe the confinement effect of guest species in microporous environment. Atoms of Ar were encapsulated in the cavities of $Cs_3$-A by treatment with 410 atm of Ar at $400^{\circ}C$ for two days, followed by cooling at room temperature. The crystal structure of $Cs_3Na_8H$-A(4Ar) ($P_e$ = 410 atm, $a=12.245(2){\AA}$, $R_1=0.0543$, and $R_2=0.0552$) has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique in the cubic space group $Pm\bar{3}m$ at 21 (1) $^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. Encapsulated Ar atoms are distributed in three crystallographic distinct positions: 1.5 Ar atoms per unit cell opposite 6-rings, 1.5 opposite four-rings in the large cavity, and finally 1.0 in the sodalite-unit. The possible structures of argon clusters, such as $Ar_2$, $Ar_3$, and $Ar_4$, are proposed.

  • This study has been conducted to improve the conventional compaction management method by measuring the water content and dry unit weight of soil using the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) method. In order to verify the measured value of the developed flat TDR system, laboratory tests were conducted on six soils. Also, based on laboratory experiments, field tests were conducted to evaluate the applicability of the developed flat TDR system. Also, a comparison experiment was conducted with the Purdue TDR system. In addition, FE analysis was done to confirm the influence range of the Flat probe. As a result, it was confirmed that the influence range was about 10 cm. As a result of laboratory experiment, the water content ratio showed an error of about 0.4% on the average, and in the case of dry unit weight, it showed an error of about 1.6%. For the field test, the water content ratio and unit weight showed an error of 0.8% and 2.5%, respectively. Through the experimental results, it was confirmed that the measured value of the Flat TDR system is more accurate than that of the conventional TDR system.

  • Transfer of an electron from one site to another in a molecular or between molecules and/or electrodes is one of the most fundamental and ubiquitous processes in chemistry, biology and physics. In this study fusion proteins composed by green fluorescent protein(GFP) and cytochrome b562 were used in fabricating molecular array as an electron sensitizer and electron acceptor, Protein formation onto the substrate was performed by the self-assembly technique. The fusion protein film were analyzed using scanning probe microscope(SPM), Surface Plasmon Resornance(SPR) and hybrid STM/I-V. The results suggest that the proposed molecular photodiode can be used as a basic unit of the memory device.

  • It has been known that eater-side corrosion of fuel rods in nuclear reactor is accompanied with the metallic loss of wall thickness and hydrogen pickup in the fuel dadding tube. The fuel dad corrosion is one of the major factors to be controlled to maintain the fuel integrity during reactor operation. An oxide later thickness measuring device equipped with ECT probe system was developed by KAERI, and whose performance test was carried out in NDT(Non-destructive Test) hot-cell or PIE(Post Irradiation Examination) Facility. At first, the calibration/performance test was executed for the unirradiated standard specimen rod fabricated with several kinds of plastic thin films whose thickness ore predetermined, and the result of which showed a good precision within 10% of discrepancy. And then, hot test us peformed for the irradiated fuel rod selectively extracted from J44 fuel assembly discharged from Kori Unit-2. The data obtained with this device were compared with the metallographic result obtained from destructive examination in PIEF hot-cell on the same fuel rod to verify the validity of the measurement data.
