  • OFDM system has a disadvantage of sensitiveness about the effect of the frequency offset caused by the discord of oscillators in transmitter and receiver. The frequency offset can be divided into integral part and decimal part. Although the frequency offset of integral part do not effect orthogonality between subcarriers, it makes the bit error probability become to 0.5 because of circular transient among transmitted data symbols. This paper proposes a new estimation scheme of the frequency offset of integral part by Maximum Likelihood (ML) demanding only one training symbol in multipath fading channel environment. This proposed scheme not only can reduce the number of training symbol but do not increase the complexity and it shows the better performance by simulation.

  • In this paper, performance of OFDM systems with turbo code is analyzed and simulated in a satellite broadcasting channel. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. The satellite channel is modeled as a combination of Rayleigh fading with shadowing and Rician fading channels. As turbo decoding algorithms, MAP (maximum a posteriori), Max-Log-MAP, and SOVA (soft decision Viterbi output) algorithms are chosen and their performances are compared. From simulation results, it is demonstrated that Max-Log-MAP algorithm is promising in terms of performance and complexity. It is shown that performance is substantially improved by increasing the number of iterations and interleaver length of a turbo encoder. The results in this paper can be applied to OFDM-based satellite broadcasting systems.

  • In this paper, we look into a Jong Nang Channel which is the origin of digital communications and has been used in Jeju Island since AD 1234. It is one kind of communication ways which informs people of whether a house owner is in one's house or not using its own protocol. It is comprised of three timber and two stone pillars whose one side has three holes respectively. In this paper, we analyze the Jong-Nang Channel both in the light of logic and bit error probability. In addition, we compare it with a conventional binary erasure channel when some errors occur over them respectively. We also show that a capacity of NOR channel approaches Shannon limit.

  • In the field of visible light communication (VLC), light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used for transmitting data via visible light. In this study, we analyze pulse dual slope modulation (PDSM) as a means of delivering information in VLC. PDSM involves the modulation of symmetrical slope pulses to encode binary 0s and 1s, and owing to the moderately increasing and decreasing pulse shapes that are created, this method enables more spectral efficiency than the variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) technique currently adopted in IEEE 802.15.7. In particular, PDSM allows for the avoidance of intra-frame flicker by providing idle pulses in a spectrum-efficient way. A simple detection scheme is proposed for PDSMsignals, and its bit error rate (BER) is analyzed mathematically at varying slopes to validate the process through simulation. The BER performance of PDSM detection using dual sampling is compared to the performances of PDSM and VPPM using correlation detection. It is found that, when the probability of idle pulse transmission is less than 0.08 and higher than 0, the BER of dual sampling PDSM is lower than that of PDSM using correlation detection over the entire light intensity range.

  • The paper studies characteristics of the minimum mean-square error symmetric scalar quantizers for the generalized gamma, Bucklew-Gallagher and Hui-Neuhoff probability density functions. Toward this goal, asymptotic formulas for the inner- and outermost thresholds, and distortion are derived herein for nonuniform quantizers for the Bucklew-Gallagher and Hui-Neuhoff densities, parallelling the previous studies for the generalized gamma density, and optimal uniform and nonuniform quantizers are designed numerically and their characteristics tabulated for integer rates up to 20 and 16 bits, respectively, except for the Hui-Neuhoff density. The assessed asymptotic formulas are found consistently more accurate as the rate increases, essentially making their asymptotic convergence to true values numerically acceptable at the studied bit range, except for the Hui-Neuhoff density, in which case they are still consistent and suggestive of convergence. Also investigated is the uniqueness problem of the differentiation method for finding optimal step sizes of uniform quantizers: it is observed that, for the commonly studied densities, the distortion has a unique local minimizer, hence showing that the differentiation method yields the optimal step size, but also observed that it leads to multiple solutions to numerous generalized gamma densities.

  • In this paper, a performance of a decorrelating detector for a multirate MC(multi-carrier) DS/CDMA system is analyzed and simulated in a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel. The performance is compared with that of single rate MC-DS/CDMA system in term of bit error probability. Variable Spreading Length (VSL) is employed for MC-DS/CDMA system as multirate transmission scheme. From simulation result, it is shown that Decorrelator for multirate MC-DS/CDMA achieves high BER performance as well as that of single rate case.

  • In this paper, we analyzed performance of vehicle detection for ITS (Intelligent Transport System) applications. We simulated the vehicle detection at Hi-Pass System is based on DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication). DSRC is a wireless network using ITS, including GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites in conjunction with the national transportation system. The system performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. In the simulation, the vehicle speed is set at 60 km/h and carrier frequency is 5.8 GHz. Wireless channel is modeled as the Rician fading channel. In the transmitter, the ASK (amplitude shift keying) modulation scheme is applied. From simulation results, we confirmed that performance of applied Alamouti scheme is better than other systems.

  • S(Synchrous)-DMT(Discrete Multi Tone) is an emerging cable modem technology applicable to the upstream channel for high speed multimedia communication. In this paper we analyze the transmitting and receiving process of S-DMT scheme and derive bit error probability of S-DMT scheme in the $\varepsilon$-mixture impulse noise model which appropriately reflects impulse noise model which approproately reflects impulse noise characteristics of upstream channel. The analysis results show a good match with the simulation results. We also compare Eb/No gain performance of S-DMT with TDMA in 16-, 32-, 64-QAM.

  • In this paper, multiuser detector (MUD) based on radial basis function (RBF) is proposed and simulated for a multicode direct sequence/code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) system in a multipath fading channel. The performance of RBF-based MUD is compared with that of many suboptimal multiuser detectors in terms of bit error probability. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the RBF-based MUD outperforms decorrelating detector, and achieves near-optimum performance under various environments. The results in this paper can be applied to design of MUD for a multicode DS/CDMA system.

  • In this paper, the network performance of a turbo coded optical code division multiple access (CDMA) system with cross-layer, which is between physical and network layers, concept is analyzed and simulated. We consider physical and MAC layers in a cross-layer concept. An intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical system employing pulse position modulation (PPM) for satellite broadcasting communications is considered. In order to increase the system performance, turbo codes composed of parallel concatenated convolutional codes (PCCCs) is utilized. The network performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability (BEP). From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding and decoding complexity. Also, it is confirmed that the performance of such an optical CDMA network can be substantially improved by increasing the interleaver length and the number of iterations in the decoding process. The results of this paper can be applied to implement the satellite broadcasting communications.
