  • Deterministic and probabilistic approaches to the design of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system for water reclamation are reviewed and discussed. The high inactivation of TC, FC and E. coli by UV disinfection was demonstrated and the inactivations of TC, FC and E. coli were 97%, 98% and 99%, respectively. Within the range of 0.3-4.5mWs/cm, the effect of UV does on the inactivation ratio was not observed. However, in the highest wattage of UV lamp, 39W, the inactivation ratio of TC, FC and E. coli was 100%, regardless of the UV does so the UV density was more effective on inactivation ratio of TC, FC and E. coli rather than UV does. Under the 0.4 mWs/cm and 16W of UV lamp, the effect of dissolved organic matter and turbidity on the inactivations of TC, FC and E. coli could not be observed in this study within the range of 0-60mg/L and 0-40 NTU respectively.

  • There are a lot of raw materials, work-in-processes and finished goods in manufacturing industry. Here, the less stock of materials and work-in-processes manufacturing industry has, the worse the rate of the production is. Inversely, the more manufacturing industry has, the more expensive the cost to support them is. Thus, it is important for us to balance them efficiently. In general, inventory problems are to decide appropriate times to produce goods and to determine appropriate quantities of goods. Therefore, inventory problems require as more useful information as possible. For example, there are demand, lead time, ordering point and so on. In this paper, we deal with an optimal ordering policy on both way substitutable two-commodity inventory control system. That is, there is a problem of how to allocate the produced two kinds of goods in a factory to m areas so as to minimize the total expected inventory cost. The demand of each area is probabilistic, and we adopt the exponential distribution as a probability density function of demand. Moreover, we provide numerical examples of the problem.

  • In this paper, we proposes a method that analyzes the characteristics and patterns of color juxtaposition based on the color wheel used by pointillism painter and an algorithm that generates pointillistic images by applying obtained analysis data. In order to analyze color juxtaposition of pointillism, we extract the stroke colors of real painting and find the most similar probability density functions(PDFs) through applying good-of-fit tests for the probabilistic distribution of stroke colors. By performing the juxtaposition of color based on the found PDFs, we can convert input image to pointillistic image effectively. It can be seen that this study shows reliability in the use of data obtained from actual paintings and that leads to perform a reasonable work.

  • Responses of marine vehicles and ocean structures in a seaway can be predicted by applying the probabilistic approach. When we consider a linear system, the responses in a random seaway can be evaluated through spectral analysis in the frequency domain. But when we treat nonlinear system in irregular waves, it is necessary to get time history of waves. In the previous study we introduced one-directional waves (long crested waves)as wave environment and carried out calculations and experiments in the waves. But the real sea in which marine vehicles and structures are operated has multi-directional waves (short crested waves). It is important to get a simulated random sea and analyse dynamic problems in the sea. We need entire sample function or probabillty density function to infer statistical value of random process. However if the process are ergodic process, we can get statistical values by analysis of one sample function. In this paper, we developed the simulation technique of multi-directional waves and proved that the time history given by this method keep ergodic characteristics by the statistical analysis.

  • In compressed color images, colors are usually represented by luminance and chrominance (YCbCr) components. Considering characteristics of human vision system, chrominance (CbCr) components are generally represented more coarsely than luminance component. Aiming at possible recovery of chrominance components, we propose a model-based chrominance estimation algorithm where color images are modeled by a Markov random field (MRF). A simple MRF model is here used whose local conditional probability density function (pdf) for a color vector of a pixel is a Gaussian pdf depending on color vectors of its neighboring pixels. Chrominance components of a pixel are estimated by maximizing the conditional pdf given its luminance component and its neighboring color vectors. Experimental results show that the proposed chrominance estimation algorithm is effective for quality improvement of compressed color images such as JPEG and JPEG2000.

  • Material of boat hull has been used mainly with FRP composite materials until now. FRP boat hull manufacturing began to be restricted after the 2000's under international regulation on ocean environment safety. Shipyard on a small scale has manufactured polyethylene canoe and kayak hulls. Polyethylene has the melting point lower than the existing hull materials. Thermal stress occurs on outer hull surface when the polyethylene boat hull is exposed to sunlight. If it happens everyday, boat hull undergoes fatigue damage due to thermal fatigue. Therefore, this study presents the statistical fatigue life estimation on the HDPE boat hull subject to repeated thermal stress under three point bending condition.

  • All contemporary seismic Codes have adopted smooth design acceleration response spectra, which have derived by statistical analysis of many elastic response spectra of natural accelerograms. The above smooth design spectra are characterized by two main branches, an horizontal branch that is 2.5 times higher than the peak ground acceleration, and a declining parabolic branch. According to Eurocode EN/1998, the period range of the horizontal, flat branch is extended from 0.1 s, for rock soils, up to 0.8 s for softer ones. However, from many natural recorded accelerograms of important earthquakes, the real spectral amplification factor appears to be much higher than 2.5 and this means that the spectrum leads to an unsafe seismic design of the structures. This point is an issue open to question and it is the object of the present study. In the present paper, the spectral amplification factor of the smooth design acceleration spectra is re-calculated on the grounds of a known "reliability index" for a desired probability of exceedance. As a pilot scheme, the seismic area of Greece is chosen, as it is the most seismically hazardous area in Europe. The accelerograms of the 82 most important earthquakes, which have occurred in Greece during the last 38 years, are used. The soil categories are taken into account according to EN/1998. The results that have been concluded from these data are compared with the results obtained from other strong earthquakes reported in the World literature.

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of steel towers has become a hot research topic. From the literature, it is impractical and impossible to develop a "general" method that can detect all kinds of damages for all types of structures. A practical method should make use of the characteristics of the type of structures and the kind of damages. This paper reports a feasibility study on the use of measured modal parameters for the detection of damaged braces of tower structures following the Bayesian probabilistic approach. A substructure-based structural model-updating scheme, which groups different parts of the target structure systematically and is specially designed for tower structures, is developed to identify the stiffness distributions of the target structure under the undamaged and possibly damaged conditions. By comparing the identified stiffness distributions, the damage locations and the corresponding damage extents can be detected. By following the Bayesian theory, the probability model of the uncertain parameters is derived. The most probable model of the steel tower can be obtained by maximizing the probability density function (PDF) of the model parameters. Experimental case studies were employed to verify the proposed method. The contributions of this paper are not only on the proposal of the substructure-based Bayesian model updating method but also on the verification of the proposed methodology through measured data from a scale model of transmission tower under laboratory conditions.

  • An epoxy coating applied to the concrete surface of a containment building deteriorates in hazardous environments such as those containing radiation, heat, and moisture. Unlike metals, the epoxy coating on a concrete liner absorbs and discharges moisture during the degradations process, so it has a different density and volume during service. In this study, acoustic impedance was adopted for characterizing the degradation of a glass-reinforced epoxy coating using the acoustic reflection coefficient (reflectance) on a rough epoxy coating. For estimating the acoustic reflectance on a wavy epoxy coating surface, a probabilistic model was developed to represent the multiple irregular reflections of the acoustic wave from the wavy surface on the basis of the simulated annealing technique. A number of epoxy-coated concrete specimens were prepared and exposed to accelerated aging conditions to induce an artificial aging degradation in them. The acoustic impedance of the degraded epoxy coating was estimated successfully by minimizing the error between a waveform calculated from the mathematical model and a waveform measured from the surface of the rough coating.
