  • The paper presents the mechanism of secondary flows and the associated total pressure losses occurring in turbine cascades with turning angle of about 127 and 77 degree. Velocity and pressure measurements are taken in seven traverse planes through the cascade passage using a prism type five hole probe. Oil-film flow visualization is also conducted on blade and endwall surfaces. The characteristics of the limiting streamlines show that the three dimensional separation is an important flow feature of endwall and blade surfaces. The larger turning results in much stronger contribution of the secondary flows to the loss developing mechanism. A large part of the endwall loss region at downstream pressure side is found to be very thin when compared to that of the cascade inlet and suction side endwall. Evolution of overall loss starts quite early within the cascade and the rate of the loss growth is much larger in the blade of large turning angle than in the blade of small turning angle.

  • This paper proposes a specific sensor-design strategy and the possibility of improving the sensing performance, which can be obtained by replacing part of the existing plasmonic sensor based on the Kretschmann configuration method with an effective refractive-index layer. By replacing the metal layer with an effective refractive-index layer composed of gold and the material to be sensed, an improvement in the detection performance, accompanied by an increase in the sensed incident angle, is observed, and the gold-composition ratio that demonstrates the best result is presented. Subsequently, an increase in the sensed incident angle generated in the previous step can be suppressed by randomly etching a portion of the prism adjacent to the metal layer in a sub-wavelength scale. Finally, this study analyzes the optimization of the metal-layer thickness in a given sensor structure. An effective refractive thin-film surface plasmon resonance sensor design that can achieve optimal sensing performance is then proposed.

  • The crystals of group-Ⅲ nitride semiconductors with wurtzite structure exhibit a strong polarity. Especially, GaN has characteristics of different growth rate, anisotropic electrical and optical properties due to the polarity. In this work, GaN epilayer was grown and the polarities of the crystals were observed by the chemical wet etching and SP-EFM. GaN thin films were deposited on c-plane A1₂O₃ substrate under the variations of growth conditions by HVPE such as the deposition temperature of the buffer layer, the deposition time, the ratio of Group-V and Ⅲ and the deposition temperature of the film. The adquate results were obtained under the conditions of 500℃, 90 seconds, 1333 and 1080℃, respectively. It is observed that the GaN layer grown without the buffer layer has N-polarity and the GaN layer grown on the buffer layer has Ga-polarity. Fine crystal single particles were grown on c-plane A1₂O₃ and SiO₂, layer. The external shape of the crystal shows {10-11}{10-10}(000-1) planes as expected in the PBC theory and anisotropic behavior along c-axis is obvious. As a result of etching on each plane, (000-1) and {10-11}planes were etched strongly due to the N-polarity and {10-10} plane was not affected due to the non-polarity. In the case of the crystal grown on c-plane A1₂O₃, two types of crystals were grown. They were hexagonal pyramidal-shape with {10-11}plane and hexagonal prism with basal plane. The latter might be grown by twin plane reentrant edge (TPRE) growth.

  • The possibility of replacing the condensing-prism film used in conventional backlight units with a light-guide plate engraved with a submicrometer-periodic diffraction grating was investigated. The optimal period for the diffraction grating was determined through simulation and experiment, and the transmission-mode efficiency of the diffraction grating was calculated in terms of the polar angle and azimuthal angle of the incident light. In addition, the effects of the two methods of optimizing the polar angle and the directional angle were compared by simulation, by suggesting the shape and configuration of the light-guide plate, so that more light could be extracted by diffraction. By using a ray-tracing program, the luminance angular distribution of the light-guide plate engraved with the diffraction grating was calculated and compared to the luminance angular distribution for each actual prototype.

  • A application possibility of photoresist flexible film for optical waveguide is proposed and described. The optical waveguide dimensions that is consists of Mach-zehnder interferometric and single channel waveguide based on the single-mode conditions in LiNbO$_3$ device was utilized and fabricated by wet etching technique. This Polymer material for core layer is SU-8/5O(Microchem.) and its refractive index from prism couping method was measured about 1.59 thickness about 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at wavelength 0.6328${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. From the results, this work can show the possibility of fabricating a flexible optical waveguide in the field of integrated optics.

  • A daylighting system includes three parts; light collector, light transformer and light distributor. A DBLP(Double blind light pipe) daylighting system consists of a double blind light collector, a mirror duct type light transformer and a prism film light pipe distributor. The double blinds for a light collection are used to track the sun's altitude and azimuth movements throughout the day. Behind both sets of blinds is the light transformer, which is based on a rectangular cone shaped light duct. The light transformer was designed to efficiently deliver the light into the light pipe within a 30 degree radial spread for the efficient light into the distributor. In this study, DBLP system efficiency was simulated, evaluated and optimized by Tracepro as a popular ray trace light design simulation program. The results indicated that DBLP system efficiency evaluated a maximum 22.4% in case of Spring/Fall season solar noon time. While the overall average system efficiency in the morning and afternoon is evaluated about 10%.

  • Silicon dioxide thick film using silica optical waveguide cladding was fabricated by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition(PECVD) method, at a low temperature ($320^{\circ}$C) and from $(SiH_4+N_2O)$ gas mixtures. The effects of deposition parameters on properties of $SiO_2$ thick films were investigated by variation of $N_2O/SiH_4$ flow ratio and RF power. After the deposition process, the samples were annealed in a furnace at $1150^{\circ}$C, in N2 atmosphere, for 2h. As the $N_2O/SiH_4$ flow ratio increased, deposition rate decreased from 9.4 to 2.9 ${\mu}m/h$. As the RF power increased, deposition rate increased from 4.7 to 6.9 ${\mu}m/h$. The thickness and the refractive index measurements were measured by prism coupler. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS) and Fourier Transform-infrared Spectroscopy(FT-IR) were used to determine the chemical states. The cross-section of films was observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).

  • Nowadays, TFT-LCD is widely used as display unit of many digital devices. And, the backlight unit(BLU) is used as a light source of TFT-LCD module. In the backlight unit, the most important component is a light guide, which guides the input light to the TFT-LCD module uniformly. Recently, many researchers have focused on improving the efficiency of BLU by changing the design and structure of a light guide. In the present paper, a series of simulation was performed to find the optimal luminance distribution of emanated light from the given geometry as the first step. From the results of simulations for the light guide with given V-groove pattern, the emanated light from it is mostly affected by the groove angle. In the case of acute angle, about 74 degrees was found as optimal angle to satisfy the restrictions of angular luminance distribution, FWHM, the maximum luminance, etc. However, as far as the average luminance value was concerned, the case of 120 degrees(abtuse angle) was found to be the best while prism films were added to the BLU. As a next step the light guide samples of 74 and 120 degrees were manufactured by DSF method, which was recently proposed by the authors. Of course, most of design parameters were chosen by the aid of simulation results. Finally, the results of average luminance values were compared between the simulation and DSF molded samples.

  • We precisely measured and analyzed the dynamics of peptide-antibody interactions, using an ellipsometric biosensor based on a silicon substrate. To reduce the signal error due to the imperfect flatness of the substrate for extremely low concentrations of peptide, we fabricated the biosensor with a silicon substrate coated with Dextran SAM, instead of a glass prism coated with a thin metallic thin film. At an injection speed of $100{\mu}l/min$ of buffer liquid, we detected the dynamics of antibody-Dextran SAM or peptide-antibody fixed on biosensor, respectively. We detected the dynamics of antibody-Dextran SAM interactions down to a low concentration of 5 ng per liter, and we precisely measured the dynamics of association and dissociation of peptide and antibody down to 100 nM of peptide. We obtained the rate constants for association and dissociation from fitting the data by using deduced dynamical equation. As a result, we obtained an equilibrium constant for dissociation of 97 nM of peptide-antibody complex, which belongs to Class I.
