  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the landscape image and visual preference for ridges of the Seongpanak district at Mt. Hallasan. For this, the evaluation of the artificial and natural landscape is compared through the medium of color slides. Data is analyzed through the descriptive statistics and spatial image is analyzed by factor analysis algorithm. Principle component analysis and Varimax Method are applied to extraction and factor rotation respectively. The results of this study can be summarized as follows : General visual imagesthe Seongpanak district at Mt. Hallasan are clean, beautiful and attractive. The degree of visual preference increased commensurately with the lower rate of artificial factors. Landscape Factors covering the spatial image are found to be 'aesthetic value', 'spatial scale', 'natural quality', and 'topography' factor, which account for 57.6% of the total variants. The aesthetic value variable is the most important factor in visual preference and the unnatural factors are found to present negative elements with visual preference.

  • Cathodic protection is widely recognized as the most cost effective and technically appropriate corrosion prevention methodology for the port, offshore structures, ships. When applying the cathodic protection method to metal facilities in seawater, on the surface of the metal facilities a compound of calcium carbonate($CaCO_3$) or magnesium hydroxide($Mg(OH)_2$) films are formed by $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions among the many ionic components dissolving in the seawater. And calcareous deposit films such as $CaCO_3$ and $Mg(OH)_2$ etc. are formed by the surface of the steel product. These calcareous deposit film functions as a barrier against the corrosive environment, leading to a decrease in current demand. On the other hand, the general calcareous deposit film is a compound like ceramics. Therefore, there may be some problems such as weaker adhesive power and the longer time of film formation uniting with the base metal. In this study, we tried to determine and control the optimal condition through applying the principle of cathodic current process to form calcareous deposit film of uniform and compact on steel plate. The quantity of precipitates was analyzed, and both the morphology, component and crystal structure were analyzed as well through SEM, EDS and XRD. And based on the previous analysis, it was elucidated mechanism of calcareous deposit film formed in the sacrificial anode type (Al, Zn) and current density (1, 3, $5A/m^2$) conditions. In addition, the taping test was performed to evaluate the adhesion.

  • Benthic macro- invertebrates were collected in a 200 m reach located in the $3^{rd}$ order Yangjae Stream, a tributary of the Han River, Seoul, from April 1996 to March 1998. Although species richness was relatively low due to organic pollution, community abundance patterns appeared to be different depending upon location of the sampling sites. At the sample sites in the straight zone with high water velocity and large substrates, species richness was high and species relatively less-tolerant to organic pollution was additionally present. At the sample sites in the pool zone with lower velocity and high sedimentation, species richness was low and a few tolerant species to organic pollution were abundantly collected. The principle component analysis indicated that some sample sites in the straight zone appeared to be related to water velocity and shear velocity, and associated with diverse taxa less tolerant to organic pollution. Additionally the sample site transplanted with large substrates was associated wit]h hydraulic characters such as substrate diversity and roughness, and was related to species indicating partial recovery of water. The sample sites located at the pool zone tended to be associated with organic matter that had sedimented on to the substrates and the taxa tolerant to organic pollution, including Oligochaeta and Chironomus.

  • We investigated to assess the relationships between the major nutrients and phytoplankton dynamics during the spring season in 2010 and 2011 at 23 stations in Jinhae Bay, Korea. The bay is divided into four different zones based on pollutant sources and geographical characteristics. Nutrient limitation (>80%) was significant in Zone II, which is located in central bay and is influenced by the water well mixed from outer bay. The limited nutrient was followed in Zone III and IV that was occupying between 17% and 83%. However, the low levels are being kept below 35% in Zone I, which is characterized by the semi-enclosed eutrophic area of Masan and Haegam bays. Based on the PCA (principle component analysis) analysis, the nitrogen (N) sources in 2010 were particularly dominant and it may be due to the water mixing and wastewater formed from bottom layers and sewage. In 2011, major nutrients including nitrogen, silicon and phosphorus were dominant in the bay and are supplied by the river discharge after rainfalls with low salinity conditions. In particular, the N nutrients being supplied in 2010 are correlated with pennate diatoms Pseudo-nitzchia spp. and is not related to the phytoplankton population densities in 2011. The present study suggests that N sources play an important role in the proliferation of diatom, and the rapid nutrient uptakes by them are potential nutrient limitation factors in the bay.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the fragrance characteristics of Cymbidium 'Saelbit' and 'Midan' according to floral organs. As test materials, full bloom flowers were divided into four organs: sepal, petal, labellum, and column. Using the gas chromatography (GC) based electronic nose, fragrance patterns, intensity, and volatile components were analyzed. Principle component analysis (PCA) and discriminant factorial analysis (DFA) plots by electronic nose data showed that volatiles of both cultivars have a distinct difference in fragrance patterns according to the floral organs, and the value of fragrance distance and pattern discrimination index (PDI) between samples was significantly high between control and sepals in both cultivars. Among the main fragrance components, several components including nootkatone were detected in both cultivars and all floral organs. However, few components such as decane were found in specific cultivar or floral organs. These results will provide useful information to select suitable materials with desired fragrance and to enhance the utilization of domestic Cymbidium cultivars. In addition, considering the recent negative perception of artificial ingredients and the growing demand for natural materials, continuous researches on scent properties of promising cultivars are required.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm for open/closed eye detection based on modified Hausdorff distance. The proposed algorithm consists of two parts, face detection and open/closed eye detection parts. To detect faces in an image, MCT (Modified Census Transform) is employed based on characteristics of the local structure which uses relative pixel values in the area with fixed size. Then, the coordinates of eyes are found and open/closed eyes are detected using MHD (Modified Hausdorff Distance) in the detected face region. Firstly, face detection process creates an MCT image in terms of various face images and extract criteria features by PCA(Principle Component Analysis) on offline. After extraction of criteria features, it detects a face region via the process which compares features newly extracted from the input face image and criteria features by using Euclidean distance. Afterward, the process finds out the coordinates of eyes and detects open/closed eye using template matching based on MHD in each eye region. In performance evaluation, the proposed algorithm achieved 94.04% accuracy in average for open/closed eye detection in terms of test video sequences of gray scale with 30FPS/$320{\times}180$ resolution.

  • As the society's expectations of business have drastically amplified in recent years, an increasing number of companies have devoted their resources and managerial attention to corporate social responsibility. However, little information bas been reported on consumers' expectations on social responsibility of restaurant companies. This research studied the consumer's perception on the socially responsible business practices of restaurant companies. The research also investigated if the customer's expectations differ based on the types of restaurants. Overall, it was found that the consumers strongly feel the necessities of restaurants' socially responsible activities and publicity of those activities (4.08 and 4.05, respectively, out of 5). They also responded that the socially responsible behaviors of restaurants somewhat affect their purchase decisions (3.74 out of 5). As a result of a principle component analysis, five types of socially responsible activities(i.e., philanthropic responsibility, economic responsibility, community responsibility, environmental protection responsibility, and consumer protection responsibility) were extracted. In addition, the results showed that the consumer's expectations toward socially responsible activities of restaurants differ based on the types of restaurants (multivariate F=4.616, p=0.000).

  • In this study, a novel land-cover classification framework for multi-temporal SAR data is presented that can combine multiple features extracted through data transforms and multiple classifiers. At first, data transforms using principle component analysis (PCA) and 3D wavelet transform are applied to multi-temporal SAR dataset for extracting new features which were different from original dataset. Then, three different classifiers including maximum likelihood classifier (MLC), neural network (NN) and support vector machine (SVM) are applied to three different dataset including data transform based features and original backscattering coefficients, and as a result, the diverse preliminary classification results are generated. These results are combined via a majority voting rule to generate a final classification result. From an experiment with a multi-temporal ENVISAT ASAR dataset, every preliminary classification result showed very different classification accuracy according to the used feature and classifier. The final classification result combining nine preliminary classification results showed the best classification accuracy because each preliminary classification result provided complementary information on land-covers. The improvement of classification accuracy in this study was mainly attributed to the diversity from combining not only different features based on data transforms, but also different classifiers. Therefore, the land-cover classification framework presented in this study would be effectively applied to the classification of multi-temporal SAR data and also be extended to multi-sensor remote sensing data fusion.
