  • Wash primer was applied to cargo tank of Membrane-LNG Carrier (M-LNGC) for corrosion resistance and high bond-strength with the mastic. However, a lack of bond-strength verification at high thickness wash primer coating resulted in strict coating thickness control. Therefore wash primer was controlled below DFT(Dry Film Thickness) $30{\mu}m$. In order to develop the wash primer satisfying GTT (GAZ TRANSPORTAION TECHNIGAZ) standard even at high thickness, we evaluated coating properties such as wash primer/mastic bond-strength, corrosion resistance, as well as workability for the newly formulated wash primer materials. The newly formulated wash primer had high bonding-strength to mastic even at high thickness and had proper corrosion resistance and workability suitable to yard condition.

  • Characteristics of polyaniline anti-corrosive coatings with various primer coating resins(epoxy resin, urethane resin, and others) and top coating resins(epoxy and acrylic urethane resins) were investigated through adhesion, acid resistance, alkaline resistance, water resistance, and anti-corrosion tests. As a result, the anti-corrosive properties of the prepared coatings using polyaniline varied with the types of primer and top coating resins. In this condition, the properties of adhesion, chemical resistance, and water resistance were found to be very satisfactory when using emeraldine base (EB) of polyaniline blended with single-packaged urethane and acrylic urethane resins as the primer coatings, and using acrylic urethane resin as the top coatings. Also, the anti-corrosive function of these anti-corrosive coatings was well preserved for 1000 hr in the salt spray experiment.

  • Multi-nozzle spray painting procedure of the inorganic zinc shop primer was established in order to obtain uniform film thickness. The shop primer paint prevents the corrosion of steel block during shipbuilding. When the dry film thickness of shop primer is insufficient, rust will be generated on the steel block. Otherwise, thick coating of shop primer may be a problem of weld defect. So, it is important to obtain the uniform film thickness of shop primer. The uniformity of dry film thickness is affected by spray speed, distance from spray gun to target surface and overlapping span of spray path. In order to uniformly maintain coating thickness of shop primer, the coating procedure was established based on the correlation of shop primer spray variables.

  • It was intended to evaluate whether the primer affects the physical performance of the waterproofing membrane coating. For this end, the physical performance change of the urethane waterproofing membrane coating was evaluated for urethane-based and polymer-based primers. As a result of the evaluation, it was confirmed that the type of primer may affect the physical performance of the waterproofing membrane coating. In particular, a difference in performance of more than 100% was confirmed in tensile strength and percentage elongation. Through these results, it was confirmed that the selection of the primer was important. In the future, follow-up studies on various waterproofing membrane coatings are needed.

  • In construction of new ships and large steel bridges in Korea, pre-construction primers (PCP), also known as shop primer, are routinely used and retained as an integral part of the protective coating system. Retention of PCP's can significantly reduce building schedule and cost. Retaining PCP through the so-called "sweep blasting" procedure eliminates or minimizes the necessity of a second blast operation, thus shortening overall schedule as well as reducing labor cost and hazardous waste disposal cost. This study evaluates the feasibility of retaining PCP as the part of primer for high performance protective coating systems applied to ships' hull, bottom and ballast tanks. Upon proving that the retention of the PCP is a viable option, the process of coating application can he improved significantly in terms of cost and working schedule of new ships and large steel bridges. Results indicate that use of the PCP via sweeping blasting in conjunction with standard high performance protective coating systems does not degrade the overall performance of the coating systems. At the same time, it is also highly recommended that the secondary surface preparation should consist of grit blasting of weld burnt and other damaged areas to SSPC SP-IO grade (Sa 2.5 Gr.), Near White Blast Cleaning with proper application and attention to detail.

  • Implementing flexible production systems in domestic and foreign automotive design parts assembly has increased demand for automation and power reduction. Consequently, transition to a hybrid production method is observed where multiple vehicles are assembled in a single assembly line. Multiple robots, 3D vision sensors, mounting positions, and correction software have complex configurations in the automotive glass mounting system. Hence, automation is required owing to significant difficulty in the assembly process of automobile parts. This study presents a primer lighting and inspection algorithm that is robust to the assembly environment of real automotive design parts using high power 'ㄷ'-shaped LED inclined lighting. Furthermore, a 2D camera was developed in the primer coating inspection system-the core technology of the glass mounting system. A primer application demo line applicable to the actual automobile production line was established using the proposed high power lighting and algorithm. Furthermore, application inspection performance was verified using this demo system. Experimental results verified that the performance of the proposed system exceeded the level required to satisfy the automobile requirements.

  • Embedded sensors were used as an in-situcorrosion-sensing device for aircraft and vehicular structures protected by organic coatings. Results are presented changes associated with a standard Airforce aircraft coating and a standard Army vehicle coating were monitored by embedded sensors. These coatings consisted of a polyurethane topcoat and an epoxy primer, however are formulated to provide different characteristics. The ac-dc-ac testing method was used to accelerate the degradation of these coatings while being immersed in a NaCl medium. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical noise measurement experiments were used to monitor the induced changes. A comparison of the results between coatings subjected to the ac-dc-ac exposure and coatings subjected to only constant immersion in the NaCl medium is presented. The results were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ac-dc-ac method at accelerating the degradation of an organic coating without observably changing the normal mechanism of degradation. The data highlights the different features of the coating systems and tracks them while the coating is being degraded. The aircraft coating was characterized by a high-resistant topcoat that can mask corrosion/primer degradation at the primer/substrate interface whereas the vehicle coating was characterized by a low-resistant topcoat with an effective corrosion inhibiting primer. Details of the ac-dc-ac degradation were evaluated by using an equivalent circuit to help interpret the electrochemical impedance data.

  • Scientific methods that measure the physical demand requirements of a construction operation have not been arrived at maturity in construction community. It is attributed to the difficulty involved in performing controlled experiments on the operation and its' volatile jobsite environment. This paper presents a method that measures the physical demand requirement of the waterproofing activity and verifies the differences between various operations (e.g., a primer painting and a polyurethane coating) consisting of the activity. Two hypotheses, which are involved in the operations, are summarized as follows: [Hypothesis 1] when one performs the same amount of work; the one's average heart rate required for the polyurethane coating operation is higher than that required for the primer painting operation. [Hypothesis 2] when one performs the same amount of work, the one's break time required for the polyurethane coating operation is longer than that required for the primer painting operation.

  • Recently, circuit printing technology has been considered as a promising alternative to conventional PCB fabrication, for it can greatly reduce the manufacturing costs. Even though printed circuit has many advantages over typical subtractive technology such as fewer processes, it has some disadvantages. The major problems are low adhesion and poor resolution. Efforts to overcome these problems have been mainly focused on ink developments with a limited success. And surface treatments showed some improvements. Therefore, various plasma treatments and primer coatings on plastic substrates have been tested. Plasma treatments using hydrocarbon gases including methane and propane improved the pattern quality of the inkjet printed circuit, which are further improved upon heating of substrate. On the other hand, there is little effect on the adhesion, which is improved only by a special primer coating. The adhesion of inkjet printed circuit has been increased more than 10 times upon treatment. As for the screen printed circuits, the overall effects are less significant since there is some organic binder in the ink. Nonetheless, the treatment has strong positive effects on pattern quality and adhesion. The adhesion of 1 kgf/cm2, which is comparable with those of the conventional PCB circuits, is possible through primer coating for both screen and inkjet printed circuits. The resulting circuit also showed good thermal, mechanical and electrical properties.
