In this study, we analyzed the structural characteristics of soot, which is one of the anticipated regulatory substances of the IMO, and used a novel classification method to distinguish between exhaust soot and engine soot in marine engines. As an extension of a recent study on exhaust soot recycling, annealing was performed at 2,000 ℃ on engine soot to determine whether it could be recycled. Soot samples before and after annealing were analyzed using HR-TEM and Raman spectroscopy. The HR-TEM results showed that exhaust soot and engine soot had similar nanostructures; the exhaust soot has a spherical primary particle with a chain-like structure, whereas engine soot particles have amorphous structures. The Raman spectroscopy showed a D-peak and a G-peak for both exhaust soot and engine soot. However, the G/D ratio indicated that the value of exhaust soot was relatively higher than that of engine soot, which implies that the exhaust soot has a more graphitized structure. The analysis of annealed engine soot confirmed that graphitization proceeded without any problems, similar to the exhaust soot. This confirmed that both exhaust soot and engine soot generated by marine diesel engines could be recycled as graphite materials.

This study was carried out to find out the way to build a comprehensive wetland ecosystem database using the technique of remote sensing and geographic information system. A Landsat TM image taken in May 17, 1997 was used for the primary source for the image analysis. Field surveys were conducted March to September of 1998 to help image analysis and examine the results. An actual wetland vegetation map was created based on the field survey. A Landsat TM image was analyzed by unsupervised and supervised classification methods and finally categorized into such 5 classes as Phragmites australis community, mixed community, sand beach, Scirpus trigueter community and non-vegetation intertidal area. Wetland basemap was developed for the overall accuracy assesment in wetland mapping. Vegetation index map of wetland vegetation was developed using NDVI(normalized difference vegetation index). The map of wetland productivity was developed based on the productivity of Phragmites australis and the relationship to the proximity of adjacent water bodies. The map of potential vegetation succession map was also developed based on the experience and knowledge of the field biologists. Considering these results, it is possible to use the remote sensing and GIS techniques for producing wetland ecosystem database. This study indicated that these techniques are very effective for the development of the national wetland inventory in Korea.
The graying of populations is emerging as an international issue around the world, and this is a problem that is rapidly advancing in Korea as well, signaling the need for financial preparations for the aged. For this purpose, various retirement pension systems are being employed as preparatory measures for the nation's elderly. Using data from 1474 people in the 2007 panel study of National Security for the Retired, the present work attempts to look at satisfaction rates with regard to public pension receipts for the national pension and special occupational pensions according to general characteristics and factors related to the preparation for an aging society. Satisfaction with retirement pension receipts according to the type of pension was high for special occupation retirement pensions, individual retirement pensions and the national retirement pension, in that order. Looking at satisfaction rates based on the general characteristics of pension recipients, the study revealed that for the national pension, satisfaction was highest for groups with above-average physical and psychological health, groups who think appropriate living expenses for the elderly are lower, groups in which a partner also earns income, and groups who had amply prepared for their expected living expenses in later life. Regarding special occupation retirement pensions, satisfaction was high for groups over the age of 70, groups with good psychological health, and groups sufficiently prepared for their living expenses in later expenses, compared to groups for which these factors did not apply. In terms of the relative influences impacting retirement pension recipient satisfaction, satisfaction with the national pension was highest when the primary source to cover elderly living expenses was a resource other than income earned by the recipient and their partner and/or income received from children. Concerning special occupation retirement pensions, satisfaction was highest among those whose education terminated before middle school, and for those in good physical health. Based on the above results, it is vital that plans exist for preparing sufficiently for the living expenses of the elderly and for facilitating the physical and psychological health of pension recipients. Plans are also necessary to, ensure that citizens are provided with easily accessible educational programs and activities regarding general installment savings and deposits, stocks and bonds, real estate investments, individual retirement pensions, private insurance, severance pay pensions, and public pensions.
This study attempts to evaluate the Korean terrestrial television networks‘ internet site effectiveness, specifically in addressing user motivations and user evaluations and in gauging the broadcasters' feedback. The result shows that the primary motive for using a broadcaster's internet homepage was to obtain information. Overall, the users tended to be dissatisfied with the services, especially with regards to its navigational structure and design and with the insufficient number of appropriate content items. The reason cited highest for dissatisfaction was the fee-based services. Among the three networks, Seoul Broadcasting System, the sole commercial network, received the most complaints from the respondents in this respect. The study results reveal that broadcasters' feedback systems to users were deemed responsive and timely, but a true interactivity between the broadcasters and the viewers was lacking. In conclusion, network televisions' internet sites and increased content access through them have provided a platform for increased communication with their viewers, however, these sites are not yet being fully utilized as effective interactive communication feedback channels but more as a unidirectional information source. In addition, the network television services seem to be lacking in providing users with efficient navigational structure, good design, or adequate content level and quality. Thus, to better serve the public, it is recommended that they improve internet homepage usability by assessing and applying qualitative researches regarding the users.

This research aimed to develop teaching-learning plans applying character education components and STAD cooperative learning strategy focusing on the 'Housing and residential environment' unit in accordance with the 2009 revised Technology·Home Economics curriculum. In order to achieve the purpose of the research, this study was conducted in order of analysis, design, development, and evaluation. The results of this study is as follows. First, at the analysis stage, relevant literature, Technology·Home economics curriculum, and the contents of "housing and residential environment" unit from 12 textbooks published by 12 publishers were analyzed. Second, at the design stage, teaching-learning plans, teaching materials, and learning activity sheets applying character education components and STAD cooperative learning strategy were designed to increase the interest degree of the learner and character of middle school students. Third, at the development stage, a total of 8 classes of teaching-learning plan was developed. In the evaluation stage, the primary and secondary validity evaluation procedures were done by Home Economics education professors and Home Economics teachers. Teaching-learning plans and learning activity sheets were revised and complemented based on the feedback from the first validity evaluation. As a result of secondary validity evaluation, it can be seen that the teaching-learning plans and learning activity sheets developed in this research are reasonable and suitable for improving character of middle school students. It is expected that these teaching materials applying STAD and character education components will be utilized as a helpful source for curriculum developers and in-service teachers.
In order to understand the processes involved in the petrogenesis and the differentiation of the primary magma spectrum, a petrological and geochemical properties were investigated for the Chonju and the Sunchang foliated granites, which are located in the southwestern part of the Okchon zone and extends up to the northwestern boundary of the Ryongnam massif as two subparallel batholiths. Major element analyses show that the Chonju and Sunchang foliated granites are classified petrologically into a weakly to strongly peraluminous or calc-alkaline, but do not fit neatly into either of the I/S-type or magnetite/ilmenite-series classification schemes for granites, although the I-type and magnetite-series characteristics seem to be predominant based on the major element chemistry. In normative compositions, the Chonju granite is petrographically evolved from granodiorite to granite, whereas the Sunchang granite is from granodiorite to quartz monzodiorite. It seems to suggest a difference of the magmatic evolution processes such as crustal assimilation and/or fractional crystallization in magma. The REE patterns of both batholiths show high similarity and strongly fractionated REE distributions which show high $(Ce/Yb)_N$ ratios and little or no Eu anomalies. These REE patterns correspond broadly to those seen in the pre-Cretaceous granitoids of Korea. Apparently, the evidences obtained from the bulk compositions strongly suggest that the two foliated granitoids were formed by partial meltings of a relatively restricted and similar, may be common, source material which contains a continental crust component having an igneous composition, and have undergone a similar magmatic differentiation processes.
Duibaejae basalts from Goseong, Gangwon-do, are divided into the lower basalt and the upper basalt depending on the properties, such as occurrence, mineral compositions, and major and trace compositions of the basalts. The lower basalts have characteristics of agglomerate rocks as well as contain, crustal and mantle xenoliths, and olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase xenocrysts. The upper basalts with columnar joints contain relatively more mantle xenolith and olivine xenocryst than the lower basalts. The major and trace element compositions suggest that the composition of the upper basalts is close to primary magma composition. Enrichment and depletion patterns of the trace and the rare-earth elements of the lower basalts are similar to those of the upper basalts, whereas the lower basalts are more LREE enriched than the upper basalts. The source magmas of the lower and upper basalts from Duibaejae volcanic edifice were generated from about 0.8-1.2% and 3.7-4.0% batch melting of garnet peridotite, respectively. The abundance of granite xenolith, and plagioclase and quartz xenocrysts with reaction rim indicates that the lower basalts, compared with upper basalts, might have been assimilated with the crustal materials during ascending to surface.

Regional cancer epidemiology is an important basis for determining the priorities for cancer control in different countries worldwide. There is no reliable information about the pattern of head and neck cancer in western Nepal and hence an attempt was here made to evaluate the situation based on hospital data, which provide the only source in the western region of Nepal. A clinicopathological analysis of head and neck cancers treated between 2003 and 2006 in Manipal Teaching Hospital affiliated to Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, Western Development Region, Nepal was performed. A total of 105 head and neck cancer cases were identified with a male to female ratio of 1.8:1. The median ages of male and female patients were 62 and 64 years, respectively. Ninety-seven (92.4%) of the cancer patients were suffering from carcinoma, three (2.9%) had blastoma, three (2.9%) had sarcoma, and two (1.9%) had lymphoma. The majority (61.9%) of carcinoma cases were squamous cell carcinoma followed by anaplastic carcinoma (7.2%). Of the carcinoma cases, the most common site of primary lesion was larynx (19.6%), followed by the thyroid (14.4%), the tongue and hypopharynx with 10.3% cases each. Comparative analysis among males and females did not reveal any sex difference in type of head and neck cancers. The head and neck cancer pattern revealed by the present study provides valuable leads to cancer epidemiology in western Nepal and useful information for health planning and cancer control, and future research in western Nepal.

Due to the climate changes in Korea, the numbers of both torrential rain events and drought periods have increased in frequency. Water management practice against water shortage and flooding is one of the key interesting for field crop cultivation, and groundwater often serves as an important and safe source of water to crops. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of groundwater table levels on soil water content and soybean development under two different textured soils. The experiment was conducted using lysimeter located in Miryang, Korea. Two types of soils (sandy-loam and silty-loam) were used with three groundwater table levels (0.2, 0.4, 0.6m). Mean soil water content during the soybean growth period was significantly influenced by groundwater table levels. With the continuous groundwater level at 0.2m from the soil surface, soil water content was not statistically changed between vegetative and reproductive stage, but the 0.4 and 0.6m groundwater table level was significantly decreased. Lower chlorophyll content in soybean leaves was found in shallow water table treatment in earlier part of the growing season, but the chlorophyll contents were non-significant among water table treatments. Groundwater table level treatments were significantly influenced on plant available nitrogen content in surface soil. The highest N contents were observed in 0.6m groundwater table level. It is probably due to the nitrogen loss by denitrification as the result of high soil water content. The length and dry weight of primary root was influenced by groundwater level and thus the highest length and dry weight of root were observed in 0.6m water table level. This result showed that soybean root growth did not extend below the groundwater level and increased with the depth of groundwater table level. The results of this study show that the management of groundwater level can influence on soil characteristics, especially on soil water content, and it is an important practice of to reduce yield loss caused by the water stress during the crop growing season.
A mean characteristic remanent magnetization was obtained for the first time in Korea from volcanic and pyroclastic sedimentary rocks distributed in Haenam Area, located in southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula. The age of the prevailing rocks in this area belongs mostly to Late Cretaceous, with a few exceptions of Early Cretaceous, mainly based on K/Ar whole rock age dating. Characteristic remanent magnetizations of these have both normal and reverse polarities with antipodal direction, which were interpreted to be the primary remanent magnetizations obtained by the ambient Earth's magnetic field at the time of formation of the concerned rocks. The source magnetic minerals of the remanent magnetization has been identified as magnetite. The mean direction of characteristic remanent magnetization obtained from the Late Cretaceous rocks in this study is Dm/Im=21.4 supper(o)/57.1 supper(o) (${\alpha}_{95}=13.4^{\circ}$, k=350.0). The paleomagnetic pole position calculated from this result for the Late Cretaceous, is $72.5^{\circ}N/199.9^{\circ}E$ (dp/dm= $14.2^{\circ}/19.5^{\circ}E$), which matches well with those of 80 Ma ($76.2^{\circ}N/198.9^{\circ}E$) and 90 Ma ($76.2^{\circ}N/200.1^{\circ}E$) of the Eurasian Continent's APWP (Apparent Polar Wander Path). This result strongly indicates that the studied area, belonging to the Eurasian Continent, have suffered very little geotectonic movement after the Late Cretaceous. The deflection of declination of remanence from Early Cretaceous rocks in the study area may indicate that the micro-block was counterclockwisely rotated with vertical axis between the late of Early Cretaceous and the early of Late Cretaceous.
