Purpose: This study was to assess the extents of the release of metals from the non-precious alloys used for dental casting by measuring the differences in the extents of the release of metals by types of alloys, pH level and elapsed time. Methods: Uniform-sized specimens(10 each) were prepared according to the Medical Device Standard of the Korea Food and Drug Administration(2010) and International Standard Organization(ISO22674, 2006), using four types of alloys(one type of Ni-Cr and one type of Co-Cr used for fixed prosthesis, and one type of Ni-Cr and one type of Co-Cr used for removable prosthesis). A total of 12 metal-release tests were performed at one-day, three-day, and two-week intervals, for up to 20 weeks. The metal ions were quantified using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer. Results: The results showed that the extent of corrosion was higher in the ascending order of Jdium-$100^{(R)}$, Bellabond-$Plus^{(R)}$, Starloy-$C^{(R)}$, and Biosil-$F^{(R)}$. The lower the pH and the longer the elapsed time were, the greater the increase in metal corrosion. At pH 2.4, the release of Ni from Jdium-$100^{(R)}$, a Ni-Cr alloy, was up to 15 times greater than the release of Co from the Co-Cr alloy from two weeks over time, indicating that the Ni-Cr alloy is more susceptible to corrosion than the Co-Cr alloy. Conclusion: It is recommended that Co-Cr alloy, which is highly resistant to corrosion, be used for making dental prosthesis with a non-precious alloy for dental casting, and that non-precious alloy prosthesis be designed in such a way as to minimize the area of its oral exposure. For patients with non-precious alloy prostheses, a test of the presence or absence of periodontal tissue inflammation or allergic reaction around the prosthesis should be performed via regular examination, and education on the good management of the prosthesis is needed.
Obesity-induced inflammation plays a crucial role in obesity-related pathologies such as type II diabetes and atherosclerosis. Adipose tissue macrophages and the cell-derived proinflammatory chemokines are key components in augmenting inflammatory responses in obesity. Anthocyanins such as cyanidin and $cyanidin-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside$ (C3G) are known to elicit anti-inflammatory activities by suppressing the production of proinflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and nitric oxide in LPS-stimulated macrophages. In the present study, we investigated whether cyanidin and C3G have the potential to suppress the inflammatory responses of adipose cells. Cyanidin and C3G not only suppressed the migration of RAW 264.7 macrophages induced by mesenteric adipose tissue-conditioned medium, but also inhibited the activation of the cells to produce inflammatory chemokines such as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and macrophage inflammatory protein-related protein-2 (MRP-2) in a dose-dependent manner. Cyanidin and C3G also inhibited the release of MCP-1 and MRP-2 from adipocytes and/or macrophages. These findings suggest that cyanidin and C3G may suppress the inflammatory responses of adipose tissue in obesity.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health behavior of shipbuilding company workers in some regions in a bid to provide information on the oral health plans for industrial fields. Methods : The subjects in this study were 310 workers in 10 shipbuilding companies and suppliers in Jeolla Namdo Province, on whom a self-administered survey was conducted. Results : 1. Concerning general information about the subjects who participated in the research, gender was possessed 94.8% by men and 5.2% by women. Age was the largest in 31~40 years old with 44.2%. Marital status was the largest in the married with 64.5%. It was the largest in under high school graduate with 71.9% for academic background, in 2,000,000 won~3,000,000 won with 49.0% for monthly family income, and in cooking with 33.9% for work field. 2. Research subjects' toothbrushing time was indicated to be the largest in after having breakfast. It was indicated to be twice a day with 41.3% for toothbrushing frequency. 90.3% of the respondents are not using auxiliary oral hygiene devices. 3. Recognition on periodontal health status was found larger in workers whose response was that their own periodontal health status is 'healthy' than workers who responded that their status is 'not healthy.' Workers, who don't have subjective symptom on periodontal status, were indicated to be larger. 4. Ratio of subjects with tooth scaling experience accounted for 59.7%. The ratio of tooth scaling experience was indicated to be different depending on academic background and monthly family income. Conclusions : Academic credential, monthly family income and the line of work were identified as the main factors to affect oral health care of the shipbuilding workers. Oral health education and dynamic implementation of corporate oral health promotion which are designed to meet the needs of workers are required.

Objectives : We supposed that identifying the influencing factors on DMFT index in the primary school children in Pocheon be indispensible for the primary school children's oral health program establishment in Pocheon. So, to prepare the basic materials for the primary school children's oral health program establishment in Pocheon, we analyzed the associated factors which could have an influence on the primary school children's DMFT index in Pocheon. Methods : We selected 3,676 primary school children in Pocheon, whose age were from 6 to 11, and surveyed those children by a questionnaire and the oral examination based on WHO's oral health survey method. Data were analyzed with a $x^2$-test and multiple regression analysis using SPSS $15.0^{(R)}$. Results : The results of oral survey in the primary school children in Pocheon revealed as follows: DMFT index, National Health Oral health survey of 2006 people nationwide in the results when compared to younger grade children and older grade in the low and the higher. Subjective oral health awareness, high of viscosity junk food snacks, fruit, gender, dental visits and humidity, oral health education classes, including the variable of attitude was 6(p<0.05). Their higher awareness of dental health, oral health education classes ever the more positive attitude to DMFT index was statistically significant(p<0.05). Solid in the habit of eating junk food snacks to the students of a liquid relative to student intake was higher DMFT index indices(p<0.05). Conclusions : We could reason that one's oral health recognition and behavior should have a relationship with his(her) DMFT index.

Aptamers are composed of single-stranded oilgonucleotides that can selectively bind desired molecules. It has been reported that RNA or DNA could act as not only a genetic messenger but also a catalyst in metabolic pathways. RNA aptamers (average sizes 40-50 bp) are smaller than antibodies and have strong binding capacities to target molecules, similar to antigenantibody interactions. Once an aptamer was selected, it can be readily produced in large quantities at low cost. The objectives of this study are to screen and develop aptamers specific to oral pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Streptococcus mutans. The bacterial cell pellet was fixed with formaldehyde as a target molecule for the screening of aptamers. The SELEX method was used for the screening of aptamers and a modified western blot analysis was used to verify their specificities. Through SELEX, 40 kinds of aptamers were selected and the specificity of the aptamers to the bacterial cells was confirmed by modified western blot analysis. Through the SELEX method, 40 aptamers that specifically bind to oral pathogens were screened and isolated. The aptamers showed possibility as effective candidates for the detection agents of oral infections.

The aim of the present study was to determine whether serotonergic drugs could reverse lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anorexia in rats. LPS ($500{\mu}g$/kg body weight) and all serotonergic drugs, except for 8-OH-DPAT (subcutaneous), were injected intraperitoneally into Sprague-Dawley rats. Without the LPS injection, 8-OH-DPAT (1A agonist), metergoline (1/2 antagonist), and mianserin (2A/2C antagonist) exerted no effects on food intake at any of the doses tested, but ketanserin (2A antagonist) caused an increase of food intake at 4 mg/kg. RS-102221 (2C antagonist) reduced food intake at 2 and 4 mg/kg. LPS reduced food intake 1 hour after injection, and food intake remained low until the end of measurement period (24 hours) (p<0.05). Pretreatment of rats with 8-OH-DPAT partially recovered of cumulative food intake at all measured times (2, 4, 6, 8, and 24 hours after LPS injection). Pretreatment with metergoline resulted in a partial recovery of cumulative food intake at 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours, but not at 24 hours. Ketanserin caused partial recovery at 2 and 4 hours only. Mianserin and RS-102221 had no effects on LPS-reduced food intake. A variety of serotonergic drugs ameliorated anorexic symptoms, which suggesting that the serotonin system plays a role in LPS-induced anorexia.
In this study, recognized building-related health symptoms of various workers in dental college hospitals are surveyed and analyzed in order to improve indoor environment at dental college hospitals. We conducted a questionnaire survey for 682 workers in three dental college hospitals located in Seoul from Sep. 20 to Oct. 8, 2004. Most workers at dental hospitals complained about noise, poor ventilation, dusty environment, and air dryness. SBS symptoms score for subjects was 1.43${\pm}$0.74 (often feel) and major symptoms was throat, CNS, eye, and nose symptoms. Recognized Building-related health symptoms are significantly related to tasks, working experience, job-satisfaction, indoor environment recognition index, medical history, used to special material, and number of dental unit chair. Also working places and ventilation are significantly related to the symptom. Based on the results, it can be said that special dental treatment causes undesirable environment such as noise, dust, and bad odor. It is also related to recognized building related health symptoms reported by workers at dental hospitals. So managemental efforts are needed to improve indoor environment which is related by dental treatment.
Cancer registration, an important component of cancer surveillance, is essential to a unified, scientific and public health approach to cancer prevention and control. India has one of the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in the world. A good surveillance system in the form of cancer registries is important for planning and evaluating cancer-control activities. Cancer registration in India was initiated in 1964 and expanded since 1982, through initiation of the National Cancer Registry Program (NCRP) by the Indian Council of Medical Research. NCRP currently has twenty-six population based registries and seven hospital based registries. Yet, Indian cancer registries, mostly in urban areas, cover less than 15% of the population. Other potential concerns about some Indian registries include accuracy and detail of information on cancer diagnosis, and timeliness in updating the registry databases. It is also important that necessary data collection related quality assurance measures be undertaken rigorously by the registries to ensure reliable and valid information availability. This paper reviews the current status of cancer registration in India and discusses some of the important pitfalls and issues related to cancer registration. Cancer registration in India should be complemented with a nationwide effort to foster systematic investigations of cancer patterns and trends by states, regions and sub populations and allow a continuous cycle of measurement, communication and action.

The preventive effect of Salvia miltiorrhiza extracts (SM) with or without high molecular weight soluble kitosan (K) on the progress of bone loss induced by ovariectomized (OVX) was studied in rats. From light microscopic analyses in histochemistry data, trabecular bone area in OVX rats was significantly decreased compared with that in sham rats. The decrease was regulated by administration of SM and especially the combination of SM and K (SM + K) for 7 weeks. In addition, the numbers of osteoblasts and osteoclasts were regulated in SM + K-administered rats but not different from those in either SM or K-administered rats. In OVX rats, free Triiodothyronine ($T_3$) and Thyroxine ($T_4$) were similar to control, ruling out the involvement of abnormal thyroid hormone. Although serum calcium is similar among all the groups, estrogen level was higher especially in SM+K-administered rats. These results strongly suggest that SM+K are effective in preventing the development of bone loss induced by OVX in rats.
This study compared and analyzed changes to the mechanical characteristics to nonprecious metal alloy for porcelain fused to metal crowns when it's repetitively used without the addition of new alloy. Metal samples were made with the Verabond V nonprecious metal alloy. Those samples to measure tensile and yield strength were made in the standardized design(ISO 22674), those to measure bond strength in the $25mm{\times}3mm{\times}0.5mm$ format, and those to measure hardness in the $10mm{\times}10mm{\times}1mm$ format. A ceramic to measure bond strength was made at the center of the metal sample in the length of $8{\ss}{\AE}$ by using Noritaker Super Porcelain EX-3. Ten samples were prepared for one, three and five repetitions of casting each. The test results were as follows: 1. The more casting was repeated, the more significantly tensile strength dropped. 2. The more casting was repeated, the more significantly yield strength dropped. 3. Repetitive casting didn't cause significant changes to bond strength. 4. The Vickers hardness significantly fell with increasing repetitions of casting. There were no changes to bond strength observed with the increasing number of repeating casting. But tensile strength, yield strength, and Vickers hardness decreased. Those results indicate that repeated casting can affect durability and that careful attention should be paid by avoiding repetitive use or excessive increase of uses when no new alloy is added.
