  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of using the relapse prevention program for adult substance addicts. Based on the results from the study of educational needs for the relapse prevention program among substance addicts the 10-session-relapse prevention program was developed. Then the researcher conducted the relapse prevention program for 15 adult methamphetamine addicts from Aug. 3 1999 to Sep. 4 1999 at the probation office in Suwon, South Korea. For examining the effectiveness of using that relapse prevention program the Social Adjustment Scale-Self Report(SAS-SR), McMullin Addiction Thought Scale(MAT), and Self Esteem Rating Scale(SERS) were used whether or not their social adjustment level, self-esteem level, and addiction thought level were improved. This study employed one group pre-post test research design as a quantitative purpose and in-depth interview as a qualitative purpose. For a qualitative purpose in-depth interview was conducted in not only between sessions but also after sessions dealing with their current life problems. For a quantitative purpose the analysis strategy employed here was frequency and t-test. Results shows that addicts who took the relapse prevention program consistently reported the improvement of their social adjustment level, self-esteem level, and addiction thought level although there were no statistically significant between pre and post tests. The implication of study findings will be discussed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a suicide prevention nursing competency program for visiting nurses, and to examine the effect of this program on suicide prevention-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Methods: A total of 66 visiting nurses were recruited from 10 public health centers and divided equally into the experimental and control group. For the experimental group, the suicide prevention nursing competency program was provided twice a week for 120 minutes across 3 weeks. Participants were asked questions related to suicide prevention knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors at pre, post, and 1 month after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a t-test, repeated measure ANOVA, and Friedman test. Results: There were significant differences in knowledge and behaviors at the measured time periods, and significant differences in attitudes and behaviors between the two groups. There were also significant interactions between groups and times in attitudes and behaviors. These results suggest that the effects of the program were persistent until the 1-month follow-up. Conclusion: The developed suicide prevention nursing competency program is effective in evidence-based education for visiting nurses to increase suicide prevention-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.

  • Purpose: This study was to develop a smoking prevention educational program and to verify the effects of the program as an intervention to prevent smoking among high school students. Method: This study was designed by using a nonequivalent Quasi-experimental control group pretest-posttest. The instruments used in this study were scale on smoking prevention knowledge and attitude. The experimental group received 8 smoking prevention educational classes, each lasting 50-minutes every week. The collected data was analyzed by real number and percentage, Chi-Square test, t-test, ANCOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, Cronbach's α, using the SPSS WIN 11.0 program. Result: 1) After the completion of the smoking prevention education program, the experimental group's smoking knowledge scores(16.05±3.40) were higher than the control group's scores(14.39±3.81). Mean scores of smoking knowledge were statistically significantly different between the experimental group and the control group(F=38.700, p=.000). 2) After the completion of the smoking prevention education program, the experimental group's smoking prevention attitude scores were 47.52±5.30 and the control group's scores were 47.l0±5.54. Mean scores of attitude toward smoking prevention were statistically significantly different between the experimental group and the control group. 3) The relationship between smoking knowledge and attitude toward smoking prevention indicated positive correlation though the degree of positive correlation was low. Conclusion: Smoking prevention educational program which included self-search, smoking influence, adolescent smoking, family smoking, secondary smoking, self assertion using refusal skill was proved to be effective as an intervention for smoking prevention in high school students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study were to develop a respiratory communicable disease prevention program for preschoolers and measure it's effects. Method: The respiratory communicable disease prevention program for preschoolers consisted of texts, cartoons, photographs, discussions, demonstrations, puzzle games, die games, compensation/reinforcement, and token economy which were directed under the systematic design of instruction by Dick %amp; Carey. This study was a quasi experimental study under the nonequivalent control group with pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this study were 45 preschool children who are attending 3 different district nursery schools and they were matched by the age, pretest knowledge, and pretest behavior. The instrument used in this study was criterion referenced test items that were developed by a researcher for evaluating the subject's knowledge, attitude, and behavior about respiratory communicable disease prevention. A pretest was administered a week before treatment. Experimental group Ⅰ was administered by the treatment of respiratory communicable disease prevention program. Experimental group Ⅱ was administered by above program with token economy program. The posttest was conducted on the eighth day. The third test for behavior was completed 15th day. To determine the effect of the program, the data were analyzed by the SAS 6.12 program with Kruskal Wallis test, ANCOVA, ANOVA, Duncan's test and paired t-test. Result: 1) There was a significant difference in knowledge between the experimental groups and control group(F=5.89, P=0.0197). 2) There was a significant difference in attitude between the experimental groups and control group(F=3.29, P=0.0469). 3) There was a non-significant difference in behavior between the experimental groups and control group(F=0.00, P=0.9512). 4) In the experimental groupⅡ, there was highly significant increase in behavior after token economy(t=4.5252, P=0.0005). Conclusion: It was found that the respiratory communicable disease prevention program for preschool children was effective in changing the preschoolers' knowledge and attitude on the respiratory communicable disease prevention, but not enough for changing the preschoolers' behavior. Token economy was improved as an effective and strong method for inducing desirable changes of preschoolers' behavior.
