  • As senile diseases increase with the aged increasing rapidly in an aging society, implementation of the aged long-term care insurance have an effect on the aged care and treatment. Though a decrease in prevalence rate can reduce social costs, the significance of that is overlooked. Especially, a program for a slight Alzheimer's disease and senile demetia in the spot of care facilities and welfare organs is nothing or a few programs which use only fragmentary techniques. So, In this paper, we propose a five-senses stimulation program for preventing senile dementia disease. It includes twenty processes stimulating five senses through proper harmony of senile dementia disease prevention techniques - hand exercises(sense of touch), remembrance therapy(sense of sight), cure recreation(sense of taste), music therapy(sense of hearing), gardening remedy(sense of smell).

Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to evaluate the depression levels. Results : The intervention group showed a significant change in cognitive function and depression after the intervention (p<.05). There was a statistically significant change in cognitive function and depression between the intervention and control groups (p<.05). • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of forest healing programs with walking, sightseeing, and forest scent among six healing forest treatments using forest environment on the cognitive function, depression, and quality of life of elderly living alone. The subjects of the study were 17 senior citizens living in Samcheok and complaining of severe depression and forgetfulness. They were divided into two groups, and each group participated in the six sessions of the weekly forest healing program. All of them were surveyed of a Korean version of the MMSE-K, BDI (Beck Depression Inventory Korean Version), and SF-36 (Short Form 36 health survey questionnaire) with the questionnaire designed for the one-group pre-post test to examine changes in cognitive function, depression, and quality of life. The results showed that the mental status, depression level, and quality of life of respondents were significantly higher after healing programs. These results suggest that participation in healing program activities using forest environment can improve cognitive function, relieve depression and improve quality of life for senior citizens living alone. Therefore, inducing older adults who live alone and avoid outside activities to participate in the regular forest healing program will contribute to the prevention of dementia due to age and environment.

  • The study aimed to identify risk factors for falls as well as hospitalization status according to disease and demographic characteristics of demented inpatients by investigating the in-depth Injury Patient Surveillance System data collected by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(KCDC). Older adults over 60 years old who were diagnosed with dementia were included(n=1,732). Their data were analyzed after being assigned to either a fall group or a non-fall group. STATA was used for statistical analyses, such as frequency analysis, chi-square (χ2) test, and logistics regression. It was found that 8.0% of the demented inpatients experienced falls. According to the analysis on category of fall and non-fall group were statistically significant difference in age and Charlson Comorbidity Index(CCI) and bone density deficiency. Based on the logistic regression analysis of factors affecting falls, older adults over 80 are 2.386 times more likely to fall and based on a target with a CCI of 0, the risk of falls is 0.421 times lower, finally based on those without bone density disorder, the fall risk for those with bone density disorder was 3.581 times higher. Therefore, we expect that the important about the factors relating to falls identified in this can not only be found valuable for educating inpatients with dementia and care-givers, but also be used as reference that supports clinical professionals to make decisions on falls management for patients with dementia.
