To investigate an effect of ethanol pretreatment on the bromobenzene metabolism, the brornobenzene (400 mg/kg body wt. i. p.) was given 3 times at intervals of one day to the male rats orally pretreated with 5% ethanol throughout 2 months. In the ethanol pretreated rats, liver injuries were not demonstrated on the basis of the liver weight per body weight, serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity and histopathologic findings. By the bromobenzene treatment, ethanol pretreated rats showed the more decreased levels of serum ALT and liver weight/body weight(%), and decreased degree of liver damage on histopathological observation than the control group. The ethanol pretreated rats showed the more increased activities of hepatic aniline hydroxylase, glutathione Stransf erase (GST) and the more decreased contents of glutathione than the control. Concomitantly the ethanol pretreated rats showed the more decreased contents of hepatic glutathione and increased activities of GST by the bromobenzene treatment. Above results indicate that ethanol pretreatment enhance the metabolizing ability of bromobenzene in rats.

To investigate the effects of pretreatment and substrate bias on the characteristics of the diamond thin films, the thin films were deposited on the p-type Si(100) wafer by MPECVD using mixtures of $H_2$, $CH_4$, and $O_2$ gases. Deposition was carried out at the substrate temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ and at the pressure of 40torr. The effect of the pretreatment on the film formation was the examined by using SiC and diamond powders as abrasive powders. Furthermore, the substrate bias effect on the formation of the diamond film was also examined. The highest nucleation density was observed for the pretreatment with 40~60$\mu\textrm{m}$ size of diamond powders and a negative bias potential(-50V). Many defects and(111) twins in the diamond films were observed.
Glucocorticoids are known to have anti-inflammatory effect. To investigate whether corticosterone pretreatment enhances or not lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of inflammatory mediators, RAW 264.7 cells were pretreated with various concentrations of corticosterone for 24 h and then cultured without corticosterone in the presence or absence of LPS. Our results demonstrated that LPS remarkably increased production of TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-6, IL-$1{\beta}$, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and NO (nitric oxide). Corticosterone pretreatment significantly attenuated LPS-induced production of TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-$1{\beta}$, and VEGF, while significantly enhanced IL-6 and NO. These findings suggest that corticosterone pretreatment may contribute to LPS-induced inflammatory responses in macrophages via pro- and anti-inflammatory imbalance of inflammatory mediators.
The effect of pretreatment on indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrodes has been rarely studied, although that on metal and carbon electrodes has been enormously done. The electrochemical and surface properties of ITO electrodes are investigated after 6 different pretreatments. The electrochemical behaviors for oxygen reduction, $Ru(NH_3){_6}^{3+}$ reduction, $Fe(CN){_6}^{3-}$ reduction, and p-hydroquinone oxidation are compared, and the surface roughness, hydrophilicity, and surface chemical composition are also compared. Oxygen reduction, $Fe(CN){_6}^{3-}$ reduction, and p-hydroquinone oxidation are highly affected by the type of the pretreatment, whereas $Ru(NH_3){_6}^{3+}$ reduction is almost independent of it. Interestingly, oxygen reduction is significantly suppressed by the treatment in an HCl solution. The changes in surface roughness and composition are not high after each pretreatment, but the change in contact angle is substantial in some pretreatments.
Recently ZnO epitaxial layers have been widely studied as a semiconductor material for optoelectronic devices. Sapphire and silicon are commonly selected as substrate materials for ZnO epitaxial growth. In this communication, we report the effect of the ECR plasma pretreatment of sapphire and silicon substrates on the nucleation in the ZnO ALE (atomic layer epitaxy). It was found that ECR plasma pretreatment reduces the incubation period of the ZnO nucleation. Oxygen ECR plasma enhances ZnO nucleation most effectively since it increases the hydroxyl group density at the substrate surface. The nucleation enhancing effect of the oxygen ECR plasma treatment is stronger on the sapphire substrate than on the silicon substrate since the saturation density of the hydroxyl group is lower at the sapphire surface than that at the silicon surface.

The effect of forming a passivation layer was investigated in superconformal Cu gap-filling of the nano-scale trench with atomic-layer deposited (ALD)-Ru glue layer. It was discovered that the nucleation and growth of Cu during metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) were affected by hydrogen plasma treatments. Specifically, as the plasma pretreatment time increased, Cu nucleation was suppressed proportionally. XPS and Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy indicated that hydrogen atoms passivate the Ru surface, which leads to suppression of Cu nucleation owing to prevention of adsorption of Cu precursor molecules. For gap-fill property, sub 60-nm ALD Ru trenches without the plasma pretreatment was blocked by overgrown Cu after the Cu deposition. With the plasma pretreatment, superconformal gap filling of the nano-scale trenches was achieved due to the suppression of Cu nucleation near the entrances of the trenches. Even the plasma pretreatment with bottom bias leads to the superconformal gap-filling.

The catalytic combustion of benzene, toluene and xylene over Pt-based catalyst was investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor system with atmospheric pressure to recycle the waste industrial catalyst for the processes of removing volatile organic compounds. According to the pretreatment condition, the properties of the waste Pt-based catalyst were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction) and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Toller). In the carte of air pretreatment, 20$0^{\circ}C$ was found to be optimal, and increasing pretreatment temperature resulted in the reduction of the catalytic activity. When Pt-based catalyst pretreated at 20$0^{\circ}C$ by alto was retreated by hydrogen, the catalytic activity increased by increasing treatment temperature. In the case of HNO$_3$aqueous solution pretreatment, the catalytic activity decreased by increasing the concentration of HNO$_3$aqueous solution. The catalytic activity was seen to observe the following sequence : benzene > toluene > xylene.

The present study was undertaken in order to elucidate the effects of pretreatment with nicotinamide on changes in the hepatic metabolizing enzyme system inducted by streptozotocin (STZ). In rats, STZ(50mg/kg) administered by tail vein caused a significant rise in hepatic aniline hydroxylase and a decrease in aminopyrine N-demethylase when compared to control (p<0.05). Pretreatment with nicotinamice inhibited these effects (p<0.05). Similarly, STZ induced changes in hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450 activity were inhibited by pretreatment with nicotinamide (p<0.05). However, changes in UDP-glucuronyl transferase and sulfortransferase activity were not significantly different(p>0.05). Pretreatment with nicotinamide also prevented STZ induced increases in glutathion S-tranferase activity when compared to the control(p<0.05). There results suggest that nicotinamide pretreatment suppresses STZ-induced changes in the hepatic metabolizing enzyme system.

Panax notoginseng (Buck) F.H chen. root (PNS) is used as a therapeutic agent to stop haemorrhages and a tonic to promote health in Korean and Chinses medicine. The pharmacokinetic profiles of the main PNS are still not accurately investigated. Our preliminary aim is to elucidate the pharmacokinetics features of the PNS in rats. Objective of this study is to determine whether PNS affects hepatic microvascular dysfunction elicited by gut ischemia and reperfusion (I/R), since gut I/R causes hepatic microvascular dysfunction, and to investigate the role of nitric oxide (NO). No has been found to be a modulator of the adhesive interactions between platelet and endothelial cells. Male Wistar rats were exposed to 30 min of gut ischemia followed by 60 min of reperfusion. Intravital microscopy was used to monitor the number of non-perfused sinusoids (NPS). In another set of experiments, PNS (1 g/kg pre day intragastrically) was administered to rats for 7 days. In some experiments, dexamethasone (ST) (2 mg/kg per day intravenously) was administered. In control rats, gut I/R elicited increases in the number of NPS, and plasma TNF-${\alpha}$ and ALT activities, and these changes were mitigated by the pretreatment with PNS. Pretreatment with an No synthase inhibitor diminished the protective effects of PNS on the increase in NPS and plasma TNF-${\alpha}$ levels, but not its effect on the increase in plasma ALT activities. Pretreatment with PNS increased plasma nitrite/nitrate levels. The responses caused by gut I/R were attenuated by the pretreatment with ST. Pretreatment with an NO synthase inhibitor did not affect the effect of ST. These results suggest that PNS attenuates the gut I/R-induced hepatic microvascular dysfunction and inflammatory responses such as TNF-${\alpha}$ production in the early phase via enhancement of NO production, and sequential hepatocellular damage via its anti-inflammatory effect like corticosteroid effect.
Inoculated anthers of Capsicum annuum L. were subjected to 4 and 32$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment and their influence on the microspore viability, early cytological changes and the induction frequency of microspore embryo was investigated. Viability of freshly isolated microspores was between 62 and 64%. During temperature pretreatment, microspore viability showed a rapid decrease and this tendency enhanced with the 32$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment. Irrespective of temperature pretreatment, microspore viability declined to nearly zero after nine days. Before temperature pretreatment, most of the microspores in anthers were at late uninucleate stage. Several types of multinuclear microspores appeared from the 2 day after culture onwards, together with many degenerated and non-induced microspores. The 32$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment gave higher proportions of embryogenic microspore than other treatment. However, the temperature pretreatment had no clear effect on the frequencies of symmetrical binucleate rnicrospore. The multinucleate grains might originate either by symmetrical or asymmetrical division. After 2 days of pretreatment at 25 and 32$^{\circ}C$ , degenerated microspore increased above 50%. In contrast, during 4$^{\circ}C$ treatment, nucleus of most microspores remained intact for 14 days. The 32$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment produced more embryos than 4$^{\circ}C$ treatment. The most effective period of 32$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment was 4 days. In contrast, effective period of 4$^{\circ}C$ pretreatment was 2 days and longer time had deleterious effect on induction of microspore embryo.
