This study was performed to estimate the anchorage behavior for Bi Prestressed Concrete Girder(Bicon girder) which could introduce effectively prestressed forces into concrete girders. A bicon girder is manufactured by means of introducing pure bending moment that prestress simultaneously the compressive member(steel bar) and the tensile member(steel tendon). Therefore, the steel bar and the steel tendon must be unified in both ends and compressive and tensile force be offset. Anchorage dimension of 6 test specimens was designed under PTI specification which defined maximum stress and deformation to estimate structural behavior. Test results showed that the stress and the deformation of anchorage were within limits if the steel bar behaviored elastically.

This study is to investigate the ultimate shear load of prestressed girder made of Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC). Nine girders were tested until failure in shear. An analytical model to predict the ultimate shear load was formulated based on the Two Bounds Theory. A fiber reinforcing model was constituted based on the random assumption of steel fiber uniform distribution. The predicted values were compared with the conventional predictions and the test results. The proposed equations for computing the ultimate shear strength can be used for the ultimate failure status analysis, which could also be utilized for numerical limit analysis of prestressed UHPFRC girder. The established fiber reinforcing theoretical model can also be a reference for micro-mechanics analysis of UHPFRC.

The development of external prestressing methods has been one of the major trends in the concrete bridge constructions over the past decades. One of the promising methods to enhance the flexural strength of a externally prestressed girder is to place the tendons with large eccentricities. The test results in this study showed that the external prestressing of a composite girder increased the range of the elastic behavior, reduced deflections, increased ultimate strength, and added to the redundancy by providing the multiple stress paths. This study was conducted on the concrete bridges reinforced by the continuous girders and the external prestressing.

One of the main objectives of this study is to propose a realistic limit state model for reliability-based safety assessment of precast segmental prestressed concrete box girder bridges, considering 1) combined effects of bending, shear and torsional forces, and 2) the difference between transverse reinforcments of box girder. A improved limit state model is derived from a modified interaction equation compared with the Bruno's equation. A Drectional sampling algorithm is used for reliability analysis of the proposed model.

Studying the structural behavior of prestressed segmented girders is quite important due to the large use this type of solution in viaducts and bridges. Thus, this work presents a nonlinear three-dimensional structural analysis of an externally prestressed segmented concrete girder through the Finite Element Method (FEM), using a customized ANSYS platform, version 14.5. Aiming the minimization of the computational effort by using the lowest number of finite elements, a new viscoelastoplastic material model has been implemented for the structural concrete with the UPF customization tool of ANSYS, adding new subroutines, written in FORTRAN programming language, to the main program. This model takes into consideration the cracking of concrete in its formulation, being based on fib Model Code 2010, which uses Ottosen rupture surface as the rupture criterion. By implementing this new material model, it was possible to use the three-dimensional 20-node quadratic element SOLID186 to model the concrete. Upon validation of the model, an externally prestressed segmented box concrete girder that was originally lab tested by Aparicio et al. (2002) has been computationally simulated. In the discretization of the structure, in addition to element SOLID186 for the concrete, unidimensional element LINK180 has been used to model the prestressing tendons, as well as contact elements CONTA174 and TARGE170 to simulate the dry joints along the segmented girder. Stresses in the concrete and in the prestressing tendons are assessed, as well as joint openings and load versus deflection diagrams. A comparison between numerical and experimental data is also presented, showing a good agreement.
Prestressed composite girders provide efficient composite action by applying prestress to the sub-encasing concrete. In this study, an enhanced prestressed composite girder with forms suspended from the steel girder is utilized. Long-term behavior of the prestressed composite girder is estimated using age-adjusted effective modulus method, which is verified experimentally using measurements obtained from an in-service bridge. Then, parametric study is carried out to investigate the influences caused by ambient temperature, humidity, prestressing and concrete casting date.

The cracking behavior of prestressed concrete members is important for the rational design of prestressed concrete structures. However, the test data on the cracking behavior of prestressed concrete structures are very limited. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the crack spacing and crack width in transversely post-tensioned decks of concrete box girder bridges under applied loading. For this purpose, large scale test members of concrete box girder segments were fabricated and tested. The crack widths, crack spacings and crack patterns were investigated for various load levels. The crack widths and steel strains were continuously monitored during the loading process. To derive a rational predicton equation for crack width, the bond characteristics of post-tensioned steel and nonprestressed rebar in the PSC members were explored first. This was done by measuring the strains of prestressing steel and nonprestressed rebar in the test members under loading. A simple equation for the prediction of maximum crack width in transversely post-tensioned concrete one-way slabs is proposed by considering bond characteristic of prestressing steel and nonprestressed reinforcement. The comparison of proposed equation with experimental data shows good correlation. The present study indicates that ACI and CEB-FIP code equations exhibit rather large deviation from test data on prestressed concrete members.

Generally, a precast prestressed concrete (PSC) beam is used as girders for short-to-medium span (less than 30 m) bridges due to the advantages of simple design and construction, reduction of construction budget, maintenance convenience. In order to increase the span length beyond 50 m of precast PSC girder, PSC hollow box girder with unbonded prestressed H-type steel beam placed at the compressive region is proposed. The unbonded compressive prestressing in the H-type steel beams in the girder is made to recover plastic deflection of PSC girder when the pre-stressing is released. Also, the H-steel beams allow minimization of depth-to-length ratio of the girder by reducing the compressive region of the cross-section, thereby reducing the weight of the girder. A quasi-static 3-point bending test with 4 different loading steps is performed to verify safety and plastic deflection recovery of the girder. The experimental results showed that the maximum applied load exceeded the maximum design load and most of the plastic deflection was recovered when the compressive prestressing of H-type steel beams is released. Also using prestressed H-type steel as compression reinforcements in the upper part of cross section, repair and restoration difficulty and cost of PSC girders should be significantly reduced. The study result and analysis are discussed in detail in the paper.

A new type of girder, called steel-confined prestressed concrete girder (SCP girder), has been developed, which maximizes the structural advantages of concrete, steel, and PS tendon, and improves on the shortcomings of steel plate girder, PSC I-girder, and preflex girder bridge for use in the construction of middle- or long-span bridges. To verify the propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of this girder, a static load test was carried out (Kim et al.., 2002). Since the main damage typically sustained by steel bridges results from the fatigue caused by the repetition of traffic loads, fatigue safety must therefore be guaranteed in applying the SCP girder in the construction of real bridges. In this study, a fatigue test was carried out to investigate fatigue behavior and provide basic data for fatigue design. Based on the fatigue test, the fatigue safety of the girder was estimated. For the fatigue test, 10-m specimens were designed for a standard-design truckload (DB-24). A static load test was also performed before the fatigue test to analyze the structural behavior of the specimens. After the fatigue test, outer steel plates were removed to observe the condition of the concrete in the girder.

This paper aims at estimating instantaneous prestress losses by measuring the actual prestress forces in prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder bridges. Measurement were taken to study initial prestress losses such as friction losses and slip losses. A new strain gauge system was developed to measure strains in internal tendons. The system was installed on a total of 20 tendons in a PSC box girder bridges. The variation of prestress forces were monitored during prestressing tendon and after prestress transfer. The prestress losses are also calculated including friction losses and slip losses. The measured data were compared with the theoretical values. The result shows that the measured prestress forces agree well with the theoretical values. It is shown that prestress force of each strand in the same tendon is a bit different. This study also shows that prestress losses of continuity tendons during prestress transfer are significantly different each other, which results from the variety of buttress location and tendon profile. The present study provides realistic information on the estimation of actual prestress forces and losses in PSC box girder bridges.
