  • Defects in aging infrastructures such as pre-stressed concrete bridges and cable bridges can cause a collapse of the entire structure. Defects, however, are often located inside of the structures that they are not visible from the outside. For example, in PSC bridges, because reinforcement steels are encased by exterior covers, corrosion and void on the reinforcement steel cannot be detected with a visual inspection. Therefore, in this paper, a new non-destructive evaluation(NDE) method that can detect defects inside of structures is presented. The new method utilizes sending of electrical signals, a method often utilized in electrical engineering to detect any discontinuities on power cables. In order to confirm the applicability and accuracy of the method, some experiments were conducted in the laboratory. And to overcome the hardship of conducting experiments on real structures due to their enormous size, simualtions were conudcted using a commercial program, COMSOL. The results of the experiments were analyzed and compared to confirm the accuracy of the simualtions.

  • Concrete filled steel tube (PCFT) piles, which compose PHC piles inside thin steel pipes, were developed to increase the flexural strength of the pile with respect to the horizontal load. In order to compare the flexural strength of PCFT pile with that of steel pipe pile, several flexural tests were performed on the PCFT and steel pipe piles with the same diameter and the P-M curves for both piles were constructed by the limit state design method. Four test piles were also installed and lateral pile load tests were performed to compare the lateral load capacities and lateral behaviors of the hybrid composite piles using PCFT piles and the existing piles such as HCP and steel pipe piles. The flexural test results showed that the flexural strength of PCFT piles was 18.7% higher than that of steel pipe piles with thickness of 12mm and the same diameter, and the mid-span deflection of piles was 50% lower than that of steel pipe piles at the same bending moment. From the P-M curves, it can be seen that the flexural strength of PCFT piles subjected to the vertical load is greater than that of steel pipe piles, but the flexural strength of PCFT piles subjected to the pullout load is lower than that of steel pipe piles. In addition, field pile load tests showed that the PCFT hybrid composite pile has 60.5% greater lateral load capacity than the HCP and 35.8% greater lateral load capacity than the steel pipe pile when the length of the upper pile in hybrid composite piles was the same.

  • PSC-Edge Rahmen Bridge makes low thickness and long span by introducing prestressed force to the edge girder and reducing positive moment. In the bridge, diagonal tension cracks occurred in the direction of $45^{\circ}$ to outer side of the girder after the temporary bent supported on the lower part of the upper slab and the secondary strand is tensioned on the girder. Researches on stress distribution and burst crack behavior of pre-stress anchorage has been conducted, it is difficult to analyze an obvious cause due to difference between actual shape and boundary condition. This study performed 3D frame analysis with additional boundary condition of temporary bent, the maximum compression stress occurred in the girder and there was a limit to identify the cause. It performed 3D Solid analysis with LUSAS 16.1 and the maximum principal tensile stress occurred at the boundary between the girder and the slab. As analyzing required reinforcement quantity at obtuse angle of the girder with the maximum principal tensile stress and directional cosine, reinforcement quantity was insufficient. Additional bridges have increased reinforcement quantity and extended area and crack was not occurred. It is expected that cracks on the girder during construction could be controlled by applying the proposed method to PSC-Edge Rahmen Bridge.

  • In this study, flexural tests of prestressed high strength spun concrete (PHC) piles reinforced with infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars were conducted, where the longitudinal rebar ratio and the presence of sludge formed on the inner surface of PHC pile were set as key test variables. A total of six PHC pile specimens were manufactured, and their flexural behaviors including failure mode, crack pattern, longitudinal strain distribution in a section and end slip between external PHC pile and infilled concrete were measured and discussed in detail. The test results revealed that the flexural stiffness and strength increased as the longitudinal rebar ratio became larger, and that the sludge formed on the inner surface of PHC pile did not show any detrimental effect on the flexural performance. In addition to the experimental approach, this study presents a nonlinear flexural analysis model considering compatibility conditions and strain and stress distributions of the PHC piles and infilled concrete. The rationality of the nonlinear flexural analysis model was verified by comparing it with test results, and it appeared that the proposed model well evaluated the flexural behavior of PHC piles reinforced with infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars with a good accuracy.

  • This study proposes a bridge evaluation system for indivisible permit vehicles such as hydraulic cranes. The permit loads for the bridge evaluation are divided into three categories: routine permit loads, special permit 1 loads, and special permit 2 loads. Routine permit and special permit 1 vehicles are allowed to cross a bridge with normal traffic. For these two permits, the standard lane model in the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code was adopted to consider normal traffic in the same lane. Special permit 2 vehicles are assumed to cross a bridge without other traffic. Structural analyses of two prestressed-beam bridges and two steel box girder bridges were conducted for the proposed permit loads. The rating factors of the four bridges for all permit loads were calculated as sufficiently large values for the moment and shear force so that crossing the bridges can be permitted. A reliability assessment of the bridges was performed to identify the reliability levels for the permit vehicles. It was confirmed that the reliability level of the minimum required strength obtained by the load-resistance factors yields the target reliability index of the design code for the permit vehicles.

  • This experimental study was conducted to evaluate the in-plane and out-of-plane seismic performances of an unreinforced masonry walls (URMs) strengthened with prestressed steel-bar truss systems developed in the present investigation. The truss systems were installed on both faces of the walls. All the wall specimens were subjected to lateral in-plane or out-of-plane cyclic loads at the fixed gravity stress of 0.25 MPa. The seismic performance of the strengthened specimens was compared to that measured in the counterpart URM. When compared with the lateral load-displacement curve of the URM, the strengthened walls exhibited the following improvements: 190% for initial stiffness, 180% for peak strength, 610% for accumulated energy dissipation capacity, and 510% for equivalent damping ratio under the in-plane state; the corresponding improvements under the out-of-plane state were 230% for initial stiffness, 190% for peak strength, 240% for accumulated energy dissipation capacity, and 120% for equivalent damping ratio, respectively. These results indicate that the developed technique is very promising in enhancing the overall seismic performance of URM.

  • This paper reports an experimental study to evaluate the flexural behavior of concrete beams reinforced using Fe based shape memory alloy (Fe-SMA) bars. For the experiment, a concrete beam of 200mm×300mm×2,200mm was produced, and a 4% pre-strained Fe-SMA bar was used as a tensile reinforcement. As experimental variables, type of tensile reinforcement (SD400, Fe-SMA), reinforcement ratio (0.2, 0.39, 0.59, 0.78), activation of Fe-SMA (activation, non-activation), and joint method of Fe-SMA bar (Continuous, welding, coupler) were considered. The electric resistance heating method was used to activate the Fe-SMA bar, and a current of 5A/㎟ was supplied until the specimen reached 160℃. After the upward displacement of the specimen due to the camber effect was stabilized, a three-point flexural loading experiment was performed using an actuator of 2,000 kN capacity. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the upward displacement occurred due to the camber effect as the Fe-SMA bar was activated. The specimen that activated the Fe-SMA bar had an initial crack at a higher load than the specimen that did not activate it. However, as with general prestressed concrete, the effect of the prestress by Fe-SMA activation on the ultimate state of the beam was insignificant.

  • The increasing sectional stiffness and inducing prestress method of continuous steel box girder using modular CFT members use the restoring force of the CFT module generated from removing the prestressing bars in the CFT module after integrating the prestressed CFT module with the lower steel plate of the steel box girders as a prestressing force. The integrated CFT module in the steel box girder can improve the sectional stiffness of the continuous steel box girder section. To examine the applicability of the introduction of prestressing to the integrated steel box girder using the CFT module, in this study, inducing prestressing tests were conducted using CFT modules for steel plate specimens simulating the lower steel plate of the continuous steel box girder, and FE analyses were conducted for inducing prestressing tests. In addition, to confirm the effect of inducing prestress to the actual steel box girder and increasing sectional stiffness by the CFT modules, FE analyses for the actually applicable continuous steel box section were carried out depending on prestressing force and sectional conditions of the CFT modules, FE analysis results were compared.

  • In South Korea, U-type girder development was attempted as a means to increase the length of I-type girder, but due to the large self-weight according to the post-tension method, the application of rail bridges of 30m or less is typical. There are not many examples of application of pre-tension type girder. This study does not limit the post-tension method, but applies the pre-tension method to induce a reduction in self-weight and materials used due to the reduction of the cross-section. In addition, we intend to apply the on-site pre-tensioning method using the internal reaction arm of the U-type girder. The prestressed concrete U-type girder bridge is composed of a concrete deck slab and a composite section. Compared to the PSC I-type, which is an open cross-section because the cross section is closed, structural performance such as resistance and rigidity is improved, the safety of construction is increased during the manufacturing and erection stage, and the height ratio is reduced due to the reduction of its own weight. Therefore, it is possible to secure the aesthetic scenery and economical of the bridge. As a result, it is expected that efficient construction will be possible with high-quality factory-manufactured members and cast-in-place members. In this paper, the introduction of the pre-tension method on-site and the analytical performance verification of the anchoring block for tension are included.

  • Deep foundations have been popularly installed in hard stratum such as gravels or rocks in Korea. However, it is necessary to consider sand or sandy gravel layers that locate at the mid-depths as the bearing stratum of piles in the thick Nakdong River deltaic deposits, as done in the Chaophraya (Bangkok) and Mississippi River deltas. This study was focused on the finding of suitable methods for estimating bearing capacity when driving prestressed high-strength concrete (PHC) piles to a required depth in the deltaic area. Ground investigation was performed at five locations of two sites in the deltaic area. Bearing capacity of the driven piles has been computed using a number of proposed methods such as CPT-based and other analytical methods, based on the ground investigation and comparison one another other. Five PDA (pile driving analyzer) tests were systematically carried out at the whole depths of embedded piles, which is a well-blown useful technique for the purposes. As the results, the bearing capacities calculated by various methods were compared with the PDA and static load testing results. It was found that the shaft resistance is significantly governed by set-up effects and then the long-term value agrees well with that of the $\beta$ method. Also, the design methods for toe resistance were determined based on the SLT result, rather than PDA results that led to underestimation. Moreover, using the CPT results, appropriate methods were proposed for calculating the bearing capacity of the piles in the area.
