상압소결(常壓燒結)한 $SiC-ZrB_2$ 전도성(電導性) 복합체(複合體)의 미세구조(微細構造)와 특성(特性)에 미치는 In Situ YAG의 영향(影響) (Effect of In Situ YAG on Microstructure and Properties of the Pressureless-Sintered $SiC-ZrB_2$ Electroconductive Ceramic Composites)

  • The present study investigated the influence of the content of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ sintering additives on the microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of the pressureless-sintered $SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites. Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed mostly of ${\alpha}-SiC(4H),\;ZrB_2,\;{\beta}-SiC(15R)$ and In Situ $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$. The relative density and the flexural strength showed the highest value of 86.8[%] and 203[Mpa] for $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite with an addition of 8[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid at room temperature respectively. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed 3.7 and $3.6[MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}]\;for\;SiC-ZrB_2$ composites with an addition of 8 and 12[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid at room temperature respectively. Abnormal grain growth takes place during phase transformation from ${\beta}-SiC\;into\;{\alpha}-SiC$ was correlated with In Situ YAG phase by reaction between $Al_2O_3\;and\;Y_2O_3$ additives during sintering. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of $6.5{\times}10^{-3}[({\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$ for the $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite with an addition of 8[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the $SiC-ZrB_2$ composites was all positive temperature coefficient(PTCR) in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]\;to\;700[^{\circ}C]$. The resistance temperature coefficient showed the highest value of $3.53{\times}10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C]\;for\;SiC-ZrB_2$ composite with an addition of 8[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]\;to\;700[^{\circ}C]$. In this paper, it is convinced that ${\beta}-SiC$ based electroconductive ceramic composites for heaters or ignitors can be manufactured by pressureless sintering.

질화규소의 소결 및 기계적 성질에 관한 연구 (A Study on Sintering and Mechanical Properties of $Si_3N_4$)

  • This study has been carried out to sinter silicon nitride with additives and to show the effect of surface finishments on its strength and Weibull modulus which are two most important factors for its applications into structural ceramics. Silicon nitride was sintered with the additions of $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ under pressureless cond-ition. The optimum properties were obtained by sintering at 1, 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs under $N_2$ atmosphere and the strength showed 6, 500kg/$cm^2$ at room temperature and 3, 300kg/$cm^2$ at 120$0^{\circ}C$. The effects of surface treatment on the strength of sintered $Si_3N_4$ were studied and the results showed that fine surface treatment increased the strength by up to 50% The Weibull analysis showed that its modulus was increased with increasing fineness of surface finishments. It was concluded that the mechanical properties of sintered silicon nitride could be improved by fine surface grinding which implied the brittle-fracture nature of sintered silicon nitride.

습도 및 미끄럼 속도에 따른 질화규소의 마찰 마모 특성에 관한 연구 (Effects of Humidity and Sliding Speed on the Wear Properties of $Si_3N_4$ Ceramics)

  • The wear properties of two types of $Si_3N_4$(silicon nitride) exposed to high and low humidity were examined experimentally for various sliding speed. Bearing steel was used as the disk material at pin-on-disk type sliding. Wear rates of pressureless sintered-plus-hot-isostatic pressed Si3N4 were slightly lower than those of pressureless sintered $Si_3N_4$. It was observed that adsorbed moisture and sliding speed markedly influenced the wear properties of $Si_3N_4$. The highest wear rate was obtained under the high humidity and low sliding speed condition. As the sliding speed was increased, wear rates were decreased and the humidity effect on the wear rates of $Si_3N_4$ was lowered. The result that the $Si_3N_4$ pin showed a high wear rate under the high humidity condition was explained by the property change due to the adsorbed moisture, plowing action by the hard particles of $Fe_2O_3$ from the disk, and the corrosion effect at $Si_3N_4$ surface. Increase in sliding speed was supposed to have reduced the humidity effect on wear rate of $Si_3N_4$ by raising the temperature of both the bearing steel disk and $Si_3N_4$ pin specimen.

  • The $\beta$-SiC + $ZrB_2$ ceramic electroconductive composites were pressureless-sintered and annealed by adding 12wt% $Al_2O_3$ + $Y_2O_3$ (6 : 4wt%) powder as a function of sintering temperature. The relative density showed the highest value of 81.1% at 1900$^{\circ}C$ sintering temperature. The phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, $Al_5Y_2O_{12}$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest value of 230 MPa for composites sintered at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The vicker's hardness and the fracture toughness showed the highest value of increased with increasing sintering temperature and showed the highest of 9.88 GPa and 6.05 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method from 25$^{\circ}C$ to 700$^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR (Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity).

  • The effects of porosity on the pressureless sintered $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites with $Al_2O_3$ additions(4, 8, 12wt.%) under argon atmosphere were investigated. Relative density of $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were decreased with the $Al_2O_3$ content. The relative density and fracture toughness of $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ with 4wt% $Al_2O_3$ are 93.2%, $1.323MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ respectively. The Vicker's hardness and flexural strength of $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ with 12wt.% $Al_2O_3$ are 0.492GPa, 261MPa respectively. Fracture toughness of $\beta$-SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites are directly proportional to relative density.

Al2TiO5가 첨가된 쾌삭(快削) SiC 세라믹스 (Machinable SiC Ceramics with Addition of Al2TiO5)

  • Machinable SiC ceramics are prepared with the addition of $Al_2TiO_5$. Ready-to-press SiC and $Al_2TiO_5$ powders are mixed and pressureless sintered at $1750^{\circ}C$ and $1850^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The weight ratios of the SiC and $Al_2TiO_5$ powders are 100 : 0, 100 : 10, and 100 : 20. After sintering, only SiC peaks are detected in the X-ray diffraction analyses. The density, strength, and grain size of the SiC increase with increases in the $Al_2TiO_5$ content and sintering temperature. The $Al_2TiO_5$-doped specimens are easy to micro-hole machine. Based on the density and strength data, the ceramics sintered at $1850^{\circ}C$ can be used as machinable ceramics.

  • Fe-30 wt% TiC composite powders are fabricated by in situ reaction synthesis after planetary ball milling of (Fe, $TiH_2$, Carbon) powder mixture. Two sintering methods of a pressureless sintering and a spark-plasma sintering are tested to densify the Fe-30 wt% TiC composite powder compacts. Pressureless sintering is performed at 1100, 1200 and $1300^{\circ}C$ for 1-3 hours in a tube furnace under flowing argon gas atmosphere. Spark-plasma sintering is carried out under the following condition: sintering temperature of $1050^{\circ}C$, soaking time of 10 min, sintering pressure of 50 MPa, heating rate of $50^{\circ}C/min$, and in a vacuum of 0.1 Pa. The curves of shrinkage and its derivative (shrinkage rate) are obtained from the data stored automatically during sintering process. The densification behaviors are investigated from the observation of fracture surface and cross-section of the sintered compacts. The pressureless-sintered powder compacts are not densified even after sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, which shows a relative denstiy of 66.9%. Spark-plasma sintering at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 10 min exhibits nearly full densification of 99.6% relative density under the sintering pressure of 50 MPa.

  • The effect of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ additives on the microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites by pressureless sintering were investigated. The ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ ceramic composites were pressureless sintered by adding 4, 8, 12wt.% $Al_{2}O_{3}$ powder as a liquid forming additives at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed mostly of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $ZrB_2$ and weakly $\alpha$-SiC(4H), $\beta$-SiC(15R) phase. The relative density of composites was lowered by gaseous products of the result of reaction between $\beta$-SiC and $Al_{2}O_{3}$ therefore, porosity was increased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}$ contents. The fracture toughness of composites was decreased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}$ contents, and showed the maximum value of $1.4197MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composite added with 4wt.% $Al_{2}O_{3}$ additives. The electrical resistivity of ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composite was increased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}$ contents, and showed positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$.

무가압 분말 충전 성형법에 의한 알루미늄 성형체의 산화반응 소결체 제조에 대한 연구 (Study on Oxidation-Reaction Bonding of Aluminum Compact by Pressureless Powder Packing Method)

  • 평균입경이 22.1$\mu$m인 알루미늄 분말을 사용하여 무가압 분말 충전 성형법으로 52%의 상대밀도를 갖는 성형체를 제조하였다. 산화반응의 활성화 에너지는 TG의 무게 변화로부터 구하였으며, 16~64kJ/mol 범위의 값을 나타내었다. 활성화에너지의 변화와 미세구조의 관찰로부터 산화반응이 산화막의 파괴와 용출에 의존함을 확인하였다. 알루미늄 성형체를 1000~140$0^{\circ}C$에서 4~60시간동안 산화반응시켰을 때, 알루미늄의 산화반응이 시간보다 온도에 의존하였다. 140$0^{\circ}C$에서 60시간동안 산화반응시킨 시편의 산화율은 92%를 나타내었으며, 이 시편을 다시 1$600^{\circ}C$에서 15시간 소결시켰을 때, 소결체는 62%의 상대밀도를 나타내었다.

소결질화규소에 있어서 Strength-Probability-Time Diagram 에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Strength-Probability-Time(SPT) Diagram for Sintered Silicon Nitride)

  • A composition containing a-$Si_3N_4$ with 5w/0 $Y_2O_3$ and 4w/0 $Al_2O_3$ was hot-pressed at 1, $650^{\circ}C$ and 350kg/$cm^2$ for 1.5hrs and specimens of the same composition were pressureless-sintered at 1, 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 and 5hrs. By X-ray diffraction it was found that hot-pressed specimens were consisted of $\alpha$-and $\beta$-$Si_3N_4$ and sintered specimens were consisted of $\beta$-$Si_3N_4$ and $Si_3N-4Y_2O_3$ which was crystallized out from the grainboundary phase. The 5-hr sintered specimens had higher degree of crystallization than the 1.5 hr sintered specimens. Among these three different specimens the 5-hr sintered specimens showed the highest strength by hot MOR test at 1, 00$0^{\circ}C$. The SPT diagram for the 5-hr sintered $Si_3N_4$ was constructed by measurements of the stress rate dependence of fracture strength.
