SiC-$TB_2$ 복합체의 특성에 미치는 annealing의 영향 (Effect of Annealing on Properties of SiC-$TiB_2$ Composites)

  • The composites were fabricated 61Vo.% ${\beta}$-SiC and 39Vol.% $TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 12wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ as a sintering aid by pressure or pressureless annealing at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The present study investigated the influence of annealed sintering on the microstructure and mechanical of SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductmive ceramic composites. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$ were not observed in the microstructure and the phase analysis of the SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites. Phase analysis of SiC-$TiB_2$ composites by XRD revealed mostly of ${\alpha}$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and In Situ YAG($Al_{5}Y_{3}O_{12}$). The relative density, the flexural strength, the Young's modulus showed the highest value of 86.69[%], 136.43[MPa], 52.82[GPa] for pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ ceramic composites.

Influence of Ni Addition on Mechanical and Magnetic Properties of Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia

  • Effect of NiO addition on microstructure, stability of tetragonal phase and mechanical properties was investigated. (Y, Ni)-TZP solid solution was obtained by pressureless sintering. The fracture toughness was increased by solid solution of NiO. Neither reaction phase nor glassy phase was observed at the grain boundaries. From these results, it was determined that solid solution of NiO was destabilized tetragonal phase of Y-TZP. Y-TZP/Ni nanocomposite that contained nano-sized Ni particles was also fabricated by internal reduction method. Some evaluations and discussions were carried out for both (Y, Ni)-TZP solid solution and Y-TZP/Ni nanocomposite.

$\alpha$-Sialon/SiC Whisker 복합재료의 기계적 물성 및 마모 특성 연구 (Mechanical and Tribological Properties of $\alpha$-Sialon/SiC Whisker Composites)

  • Sialon ceramics are presently seen as promising materials with high hardness, strength, fracture toughness and corrosion resistance for friction and wear applications. The objective of present work is to improve of mechanical properties and wear resistance of $\alpha$-Sialon(x=0.4) by addition of SiC whisker. $\alpha$-sialon(x=0.4)/SiC whisker composites were obtained by hot-isostatic pressing at 173$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour under 1757Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ N2 pressure after pressureless sintering the mixture of Si3N4, Y2O3, AlN at 1780~180$0^{\circ}C$ for 3~5 hours in N2 atmosphere. As the amount of SiC whisker content increased, relative density and hardness were decreased, however fracture toughness, bending strength and tribological properties were improved. Tribological properties of $\alpha$-Sialon/15 vol% SiC whisker composite were improved in spite of its low mechanical properties.

  • Silicon nitride powder synthesized from Kimcheon quartzite and commercial reagents, AlN and Y2O3 powders were used to prepare the partially and fully stabilized Y-${\alpha}$-Sialon ceramics by the pressureless sintering at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in N2 atmosphere. Good mechanical properties of the prepared Y-${\alpha}$-Sialon ceramics were found over 0.4∼0.6 of the Yttrium solubility range, X, in the equation Yx(Si12-4.5x, Al4.5x)(O1.5x, N16-1.5x). The properties of these prepared Y-${\alpha}$-Sialon ceramics were compared with those prepared in the same way from a commercial Toshiba Si3N4 powder.

공구강 분말 성형체의 치밀화 거동과 결정립 성장에 관한 유한 요소 해석 (A Finite Element Analysis for Densification Behavior and Grain Growth of Tool Dteel Powder Compacts)

  • Densification behavior and grain growth of tool steel powder compacts during pressureless sintering, sinter forging, and hot isostatic pressing were investigated. Experimental data were compared with results of finite element calculations by using the constitutive model of Abouaf and co-workers and that of McMeeking and co-workers. Densification and deformation of tool steel powder compacts were studied by implementing power-law creep, diffusional creep, and grain growth into the finite element analysis. The shape change of a powder compact in the container during hot isostatic pressing was also studied. The theoretical models did not agree well with experimental data in sinter forging, however, agreed well with experimental data in hot isostatic pressing.

  • The effect of $\beta$-$Si_3N_4$ seeding on microstructural development of silicon nitride based materials has been investigated. In particular, to observe more distinctly the abnormal grain growth in pressureless sintering, fine $\alpha$-$Si_3N_4$(mean particle size: 0.26 ${\mu}m$) powder classified by sedimentation method was used. It was possible to prepare silicon nitride with abnormally grown grains under low nitrogen pressure of 1 atm thanks to the heterogeneous nucleation on $Si_3N_4$ seed particles. The size and morphology of silicon nitride grains were strongly influenced by the presence of $\beta$-$Si_3N_4$ seed and overall chemical composition. For specimens with initially low $\beta$-content, the large grains grew without a significant impingement by other large grains. On the contrary, for specimens with initially high $\beta$-content, steric hindrance was effective. The resulting microstructure was less inhomogeneous and characterized by unimodal grain size distribution.

ZTA-SiC whisker계 재료의 기계적 및 구조적 특성 (Mechanical and Microstructural Characterization of ZTA-SiC Whisker Composite)

  • ZrO2-Toughened Alumina-Ceramics (ZTA) with SiC Whisker as dispersive additive were prepared by pressureless sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$ and 1$650^{\circ}C$ and by HIPing at 1$600^{\circ}C$ in Ar atmosphere. Effects of SiC-Whisker addition on microstuructural, mechanical, and thermal properties were investigated and the toughening mechanisms between theory and experiment were compared. Specimens with 15 vol% Whisker prepared by HIPing showed 8.26 MPa.ma1/2 in fracture toughness and 600 MPa in flexural strength owing to contribution of the three mechanisms such as crack deflection, whisker bridging and whisker pullout in spite of difference between the theoretical and experimental values due to the partial inhomogeneous dispersion of SiC-Whisker in the matrix and the processing flaw.

완도납석으로부터 제조된$\beta$-Sialon의 기계적 성질 (Mechanical Properties of $\beta$-Sialon Prepared from Wando Pyrophyllite)

  • $\beta$-Sialon powders were prepared by the reduction-nitridation reaction from the mixture of Wando-pyrophyllite and graphite at 135$0^{\circ}C$ in $N_2-H_2$ atmosphere. The $\beta$-Sialon powders were sintered at 175$0^{\circ}C$ by the pressureless sintering for 90min and the hot-pressing for 60 min respectively. All the sintered bodies showed their relative densities higher than 94% The values of M.O.R fracture toughness(KIC) and hardness showed 32.9kpsi 2.9MN/$m^{1.5}$ , 12.1GN/$m^2$ for the pressure-less sitnered bodies and 48.6kpsi, 4.6 MN/4m^{1.5}$ 15.3GN/$m^2$ for the hot-pressed bodies respectively.

  • For dry machining of mineral materials the Institute of Materials Engineering pursues a novel thermal protection shield concept for diamond tools, in which thermal insulating materials in diamond composite structures act as heat shield, which protects diamonds in deeper layers against high temperature and graphitisation. Before the effectiveness of this concept could be investigated suitable composites have to be manufactured. In this paper the powder metallurgical production processes of diamond-alumina-cobalt-composites with varying alumina and cobalt particle sizes, their microstructures and porosities are described. It could be observed that the distribution of small-sized alumina particles ($<70{\mu}m$) in the cobalt matrix is uniform and the porosity of the composite decrease.

  • Hydroxyapatites (HAps) were synthesized using the powdered waste of fishery products, i.e., fish scales and crab shells, as starting materials. HAp was synthesized by a wet-chemistry method followed by calcination at 600 and $800^{\circ}C$. Calcined crabshell powder revealed a single HAp phase and fine powder, while calcined fish-scale powder showed a ${\beta}-TCP$ secondary phase, even at the higher calcination temperature. Dense HAp pellets were obtained from the crab-shell powder by spark plasma sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 10 min under applied pressures of 40 and 80 MPa in a vacuum state, giving sample densities of 2.93 and $3.06g/cm^3$, respectively. The estimated grain size of HAp was $448{\pm}96$ and $283{\pm}59nm$ for applied pressures of 40 and 80 MPa, respectively. In contrast, the HAp obtained using the pressureless sintering technique showed excessive grain growth without further densification.
