Polymeric Material Application for The Production of Ceramic Foam Catalyst

  • Ceramic foams are prepared as positive images corresponding to a plastic foam structure which exhibits high porosities (85-90%). This structure makes the ceramic foams attractive as a catalyst in a dry reforming process, because it could reduce a high pressure drop problem. This problem causes low mass and heat transfers in the process. Furthermore, the reactants would shortly contact to catalyst surface, thus low conversion could occur. Therefore, this research addressed the preparation of dry reforming catalysts using a sol-gel catalyst preparation via a polymeric sponge method. The specific objectives of this work are to investigate the effects of polymer foam structure (such as porosity, pore sizes, and cell characteristics) on a catalyst performance and to observe the influences of catalyst preparation parameters to yield a replica of the original structure of polymeric foam. To accomplish these objectives industrial waste foams, polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foams, were used as a polymeric template. Results indicated that the porosity of the polyurethane and polyvinyl alcohol foams were about 99% and 97%. Their average cell sizes were approximate 200 and 50 micrometres, respectively. The cell characteristics of polymer foams exhibited the character of a high permeability material that can be able to dip with ceramic slurry, which was synthesized with various viscosities, during a catalyst preparation step. Next, morphology of ceramic foams was explored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and catalyst properties, such as; temperature profile of catalyst reduction, metal dispersion, and surface area, were also characterized by $H_2-TPR$ and $H_2-TPD$ techniques, and BET, respectively. From the results, it was found that metal-particle dispersion was relatively high about 5.89%, whereas the surface area of ceramic foam catalysts was $64.52m^2/g$. Finally, the catalytic behaviour toward hydrogen production through the dry reforming of methane using a fixed-bed reactor was evaluated under certain operating conditions. The approaches from this research provide a direction for further improvement of marketable environmental friendly catalyst production.

Odorous Gas Removal in Biofilter with Powdered Activated Carbon and Zeolite Coated Polyurethane Foam (분말활성탄 및 제올라이트 담지 폴리우레탄 담체를 이용한 바이오필터에서의 악취가스 제거)

  • The performance and removal efficiencies of a pilot scale biofilter were estimated by using ammonia and hydrogen sulfide as the odorous gases. Expanded polyurethane foam coated with powdered activated carbon and zeolite was used as a biofilm supporting medium in the biofilter. Odorous gases from the sludge thickener of a municipal wastewater treatment plant were treated in the biofilter for 10 months and the inlet ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations were 0.1-1.5 and 2-20 ppmv, respectively. The removal efficiencies reached about 100% at the empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 3.6-5 seconds except for the adaptation periods. The pressure drop of the biofilter caused by the gas flow was also low that the maximum attained was 31 mm $H_2O$ during the operation. Its stability was confirmed in the long term due to the fact that the biofilter and the polyurethane medium had a minimum plugging and compression. The microbial community on the medium is critical for the performance of the biofilter especially the distribution of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SOB). The distribution of Nitrosomonas sp. (AOB) and Thiobacillus ferroxidans (SOB) was confirmed by FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) analysis. The longer the operation time, the more microbial population observed. Also, the medium close to the gas inlet had more microbial population than the medium at the gas outlet of the biofilter.

  • Electrostatic precipitator is widely used to remove particulate matters in indoor air and industrial flue gas due to low pressure drop and high collection efficiency. However, it has a low collection efficiency for the submicrometer sized particles. Electrospraying is a potential method to increase the particle charging efficiency, which results in increased collection efficiency. Although particle charging efficiency is highly dependent upon droplet size, the effective measuring method of the droplets is still uncertain. Tap water was electrosprayed in this study, and the images of electrosprayed droplets were taken with a high speed camera coupled with several visualization methods in order to measure the droplets size. The droplet size distribution was determined by an image processing with an image-J program. As a result, a droplet measured by a laser visualization, had a half size of that by a Xenon light visualization. In addition, the experimentally measured droplet sizes were a good agreement with the predicted values suggested by $Fern{\acute{a}}ndez$ de la Mora and Loscertales(1994).

  • Fischer-Tropsch synthesis mainly produces a wax which is a viscous liquid for long carbon chain. When a catalytic fixed-bed reactor is used for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the wax generated on a catalyst surface can keep adsorbing on the catalyst surface. This liquid hold-up causes significant pressure drop and clogging problems through the reactor. Thus, the model for liquid hold-up is required to design the size of reactor and catalyst particles. In this study, the liquid hold-up model considering structural and operational conditions was proposed based on empirical equations for convective mass transfer between the syngas flow and the wax-adsorbed catalyst. The developed model was validated by comparing with the experimental data from Knochen's work (2010). The influence of reactor length and coross section on the wax hold-up in reactor were analyzed and the optimal reactor size were proposed.

Analysis of Hydrodynamic Similarity in Three-Phase Fluidized Bed Processes (삼상유동층 공정에서 수력학적 Similarity 해석)

  • Hydrodynamic similarity was analyzed by employing scaling factor in three phase fluidized beds. The scaling factor was defined based on the holdups of gas, liquid and solid particles and effectivity volumetric flux of fluids between the two kinds of fluidized beds with different column diameter. The column diameter of one was 0.102 m and that of the other was 0.152 m. Filtered compressed air, tap water and glass bead of which density was 2,500 kg/$m^3$ were used as gas, liquid and solid phases, respectively. The individual phase holdups in three phase fluidized beds were determined by means of static pressure drop method. Effects of gas and liquid velocities and particle size on the scaling factors based on the holdups of each phase and effective volumetric flux of fluids were examined. The deviation of gas holdup between the two kinds of three phase fluidized beds decreased with increasing gas or liquid velocity but increased with increasing fluidized particle size. The deviation of liquid holdup between the two fluidized beds decreased with increasing gas or liquid velocity or size of fluidized solid particles. The deviation of solid holdup between the two fluidized beds increased with increasing gas velocity or particle size, however, decreased with increasing liquid velocity. The deviation of effective volumetric flux of fluids between the two fluidized beds decreased with increasing gas velocity or particle size, but increased with increasing liquid velocity. The scaling factor, which was defined in this study, could be effectively used to analyze the hydrodynamic similarity in three phase fluidized processes.

Size Verification of Small and Large Bubbles in a Bubble Column (기포탑에서 작은기포와 큰기포의 크기 구별)

  • Size verification of small and large bubbles in a bubble column was investigated by employing the dynamic gas disengagement (DGD) method and dual electrical resistivity probe (DRP) method, simultancously. The holdups of large and small bubbles in the bubble column in a given operating condition were obtained by means of the DGD method by measuring the pressure drop variation in the column with a variation of time after stopping the gas input into the column. The size and frequency of bubbles were measured by the DRP method in the same operating condition, from which the bubble holdup of each range of size was obtained. The verification of size in determining the large or small bubbles was decided by comparing the holdups of large or small bubbles measured by the DGD method with that measured by the DRP method. Filtered compressed air and tap water were used as a gas and a continuous liquid medium. The diameter and height of the bubble column were 0.102 m and 1.5 m, respectively. The demarcation size between the large and the small bubbles in the bubble column was 4.0~5.0 mm; the demarcation size was about 5.0 mm when the gas velocity was in the relatively low range, but about 4.0 mm when the gas velocity was in the relatively high range, within this experimental conditions.

Experimental Study of Char Oxidation and Kinetic Rate in O2/CO2 and O2/N2 Environments (O2/CO2조건과 O2/N2조건에서의 촤 연소특성 및 산화 반응성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • We investigated the combustion rate and kinetic rate of char when burning in oxygen-enriched atmospheres with either an $N_2$ or $CO_2$ bath gas in a drop tube furnace. The experiments were performed with sub-bituminous coal (Adaro) and bituminous coal (Coal valley) under atmospheric pressure conditions. Two different coals were investigated over 12 to 30 vol% oxygen and furnace temperatures of 900, 1100, and $1300^{\circ}C$. For both coals, the particle temperature and overall reaction rate are lower in the $CO_2$ bath gas. However, analysis of single-particle data shows that the surface-specific burning rate of char oxidation is similar in both gases. In addition, the kinetic rate and activation energy for each coal were similar for both gases. Generally, the particle temperature and overall reaction rate of sub-bituminous coal are higher than those of bituminous coal.

Design Optimization of Dual-Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger for Exhaust Waste Heat Recovery of Gas Heat Pump (GHP 배열회수용 이중 쉘-튜브형 배기가스 열교환기의 설계 최적화)

  • In this paper, we performed the design optimization dual-shell and tube heat exchanger on exhaust waste heat recovery for gas heat pump using CFD and RSM. CFD analysis is useful to design the complex structure such as double shell and tube heat exchanger. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of the given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such dual-shell and tube heat exchanger for GHP, the computational time can become overwhelming. CFD is powerful but it takes a lot of time for complex structure. Therefore, the CFD analysis is minimized by the optimization using the RSM method. As a result, the number of baffle and tube are optimized by 6 baffles and 25 tubes for heat transfer and flow friction. And then pressure drop and heat transfer is improved about 12.2%. We confirm the design optimization using CFD and RSM is useful on complex structure of heat exchanger.

Development of Air Cleaning Roll-Filter for Improving IAQ in Subway (도시철도 객실 공기질 개선을 위한 롤필터 개발연구)

  • In a modern society, various type of transportation modes are utilized, among them the subway system is the one of the main transportation mode which more than 7.21 million people ride a day in Seoul. Due to the increased interests on the indoor air quality (IAQ) of underground facilities, public concerns on IAQ of subway system are increasing also. Platform screen door (PSD) recently installed at the whole stations of Seoul subway and tunnel washing-out appeared to be effective in reducing particulate matters in the platform and tunnel. However there has not been any attempt to improve IAQ of subway cabin inside. Most technologies for removing airborne particulate matters are known to be difficult to adopt on the subway cabin due to the problem of maintenance cost. Therefore, the object of this study is a practical development of cabin air cleaning system which can reduce the concentration of airborne particles and harmful gases at the same time. In this paper, we focused on the development of particle removing system utilizing a roll-filter for increasing operating time of air filter. The prototype of system was designed and manufactured based on the numerical prediction results. For rollfilter device, 5 candidate filter materials were tested in point of particle collection efficiency and pressure drop. It was found that the electrically charged filter material showed the highest performance among them.

  • 본 연구는 스털링 기관의 성능에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 재생기의 설계에 적합한 축열재를 찾을 목적으로 단일 철선 종류(ø0.7, ø0.9, ø1.2, ø1.6, ø2.0, ø2.7), 복합 철선 4종류 (ø1.6-ø1.2, ø1.2-ø1.6, ø0.9-ø1.2, ø1.2-ø0.9), 철망-철선을 서로 다르게 혼합한 축열재 8종류(150-ø0.9, 150-ø01.2, ø0.9-150, ø1.2-150, 150-ø0.9-150, 150-ø1.2-150, 150-ø1.6-150, 150-ø2.0-150)을 공시 축열재로 하여 스털링 기관의 운전조건과 동일한 왕복 유동 상태에서 축열재의 삽입 방법에 따른 온도 분포 및 압력 강하 특성에 관한 실험을 수 행한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 단일 철선을 축열재로 사용한 경우, 재생기 양단의 온도차는 단일 철선의 직경이 작을수록 커지는 경향을 보였으나, 양단의 압력 차는 단일 철선의 직경이 커질수록 작아졌다. 단일 철선 ø0.7과 ø0.9의 성능은 이들 2종류의 공시 축열재의 성능을 비교하기 위하여 재생기 양단의 온도차 증가에 따른 기관의 압력증가량과 압력강하 곡선의 차를 비교한 결과, 거의 비슷함을 알 수 있었으며 최적치를 나타냈다. 2. 복합 철선 4종류의 경우, 가열부 쪽에 ø1.2, 냉각부 쪽에 ø0.9를 삽입한 것이 반대로 삽입한 것보다 재생기 양단의 온도차가 큰 반면, 압력 차는 적으므로 재생기 축열재로서 더 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 복합 철선을 사용할 경우 가열부 쪽보다 냉각부 쪽에 철선 직경이 작은 것을 삽입하는 것이 효과적임을 알 수 있다. 또한 철선의 직경이 큰 것의 조합보다는 직경이 작은 철선의 조합이 재생기 양단의 온도차가 큼을 알 수 있다. 3. 철망-철선 혼합재를 축열재로 사용할 경우 재생기를 반으로 나누어서 가열부 쪽에 철선을, 냉각부 쪽에 철망을 삽입한 것이 반대로 삽입한 것보다 재생기 양단의 온도차는 높게 나타났고, 재생기 양단의 압력 차는 낮게 나타났다. 재생기 축열재로서 철망-철선을 사용할 경우 철선-철망 ø1.2-150이 전열 표면적은 작으나 재생기 양단의 온도차가 가장 큰 것으로 나타났으며 재생기 양단의 압력 차는 가장 낮게 나타나 공시 철망- 철선 혼합 축열재중 가장 우수함을 알 수 있다. 4. 철망사이에 철선을 삽입한 축열재의 경우, 철망사이에 삽입한 철선의 직경이 큰 것이 철선의 직경이 작은 것보다 재생기의 양단의 온도차가 높게 나타났고 재생기 양단의 압력차는 작게 나타났다. 그러므로 철망사이에 철선을 삽입한 것 중 성능이 우수한 것은 150-ø2. 0-150으로 나타났다. 5. 실험한 재생기 축열재들 중에서 성능이 우수한 것들을 비교한 결과, 복합 철선 ø1.2-1 50이 가장 성능이 좋은 것으로 나타났다.
