  • In this study, the applicability and external/internal stability of a MSEW abutment with a slab were investigated. Structural analysis of slab bridges between 10 ~ 20.0 m and thicknesses of 0.7 ~ 0.9 m was carried out to calculate the reaction forces due to dead and live loads acting on the bridge supports. The slab bridge with a length of 20.0 m satisfied the allowable contact pressure of 200 kPa for the true MSEW abutment. Because the external stability of the true MSEW abutment was dominated by the geometry of the MSE wall, the change in the factor of safety due to the load of the super-structure is small. Because the stiffness of the foundations is fixed and the load of the super-structure is increased, the factor of safety of the bearing capacity was reduced. As the load of the super-structure was increased, the horizontal earth pressure of the true MSEW abutment increased greatly. As a result, the pullout and fracture of the uppermost reinforcement, which are the factors of safety, did not meet the design criteria. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the pullout resistance and the long-term allowable tensile force of the reinforcement placed on the top of the reinforced soils to ensure efficient design and performance of a true MSEW abutment.

  • In this study, ultrafiltration was performed to remove humic acid from aqueous solution. Since the effects of system variables on the ultrafiltration were tangled with non-linearly. Response Surface Methodology(RSM) was used to know optimum conditions of ultrafiltration process, relations among system variables, and the effects of system variables such as pressure difference across the membrane, concentration of humic acid, and feed flow rates. As concentrations of humic acid were 10ppm, 40ppm, and 70ppm in feed stream, permeation fluxes were 2.56, 2.27, and $2.10({\times}10^{-2}cc/cm^2{\cdot}min)$ respectively ; in other words, permeation fluxes of 10ppm, 40ppm and 70ppm feed concentration decreased by 17.7%, 26.7% and 32.2% of pure water permeation flux respectively. Concentration of humic acid in permeate side were 0.5ppm, 1.2 ppm, and 2.1ppm respectively. When pressure difference(${\Delta}P$) increased from 1atm to 2atm and 3atm, permeation fluxes of 40ppm feed concentration increased by 66% and 152% of permeation rate at 1atm respectively. However, concentrations of humic acid in permeate side increased from 0.5ppm to 1.5ppm and 3.5ppm. RSM showed that the optimum condition of system variables is 38.5~40ppm of humic acid concentration in feed stream, 30~30.7cc/min of feed flow rate, and 2atm of pressure difference.

  • Adult rabbits were anesthetized with nembutal, 30 mg/kg. Carotid artery and jugular vein were exposed surgically and cannulated with polyethylene tubing. Arterial blood pressure was recorded via pressure transducer on the physiograph and $100{\mu}g/ml$ of histamine solution was infused through the jugular vein by using the constant infusion pump with a rate of 0.92 ml/min or 1.40 ml/min. Mean arterial blood pressure was maintained at $40{\sim}70 mmHg$ and hypotension was kept for 2 hours. After the termination of this period, blood was taken and osmotic fragility was mea sured immediately. Also, every sample of normal blood and shocked blood was incubated for 1 hour or 2 hours at $37^{\circ}C$ in order to see whether or not there was some influence of incubation. Furthermore to clarify which component was responsible for the change on the fragility, the mixtures of normal blood cells with shocked plasma and shocked blood cells with normal plasma were also incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for one or two hours and fragility in such cases was measured. The data obtained were analysed by probit-plot method and the concentration of saline solution at which the hemolysis started to occur, 50% of blood cells were hemolysed and that at which the red blood cells hemolysed completely were determined. The values for the blood of hypotension stage were compared with those of the control blood. The results obtained were as fellows: 1. Osmotic fragility of red blood cell was increased in hypotensive state induced by histamine. 2. The differences of osmotic fragility after two hours of incubation were negligible both in normal blood and in that of hypotensive state. 3. Osmotic resistance of normal red blood cell incubated in shock plasma was less than that of shock red blood cell incubated in normal plasma. It was suggested that plasma in hypotensive state caused by histamine might be primarily responsible for the alteration of red blood cell fragility.

  • Dry sand specimens for both normally consolidated and overconsolidated triaxial compression tests were prestressed on the path with five different coefficients of earth pressure 1.0, 3/4, 0.55, $K_0$ and 1/3. Deformation resistance of normally consolidated sand increased with increasing the initial stress for all coefficients of earth pressure during consolidation, and the deformation modulus at a certain initial stress showed a tendency to increase with increasing the coefficient of earth pressure. And deformation moduli($E_i$, $E_{50}$), were found to be proportional to the $n_{th}$ power of initial stresses[${\sigma}_{m0}{^{\prime}}$, ${\sigma}_{10}{^{\prime}}$, ${\sigma}_{30}{^{\prime}}$, $({\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_3)_0$] for both isotropically and anisotropically normally consolidated samples, where n varied from 0.37 to 0.92. Overconsolidated sand with the higher overconsolidation ratio showed the higher deformation modulus. It is concluded that the $K_0$-anisotropically consolidated triaxial compression test is necessary to obtain the more accurate value of in-situ deformation modulus.

  • A pressurized wire mesh heating reactor (PWMR) can provide high pressure and temperature experimental conditions up to 50 atm and 1750 K, respectively. This equipment was developed to evaluate the intrinsic reaction kinetics of $CO_2$ gasification. A PWMR utilizes a platinum (Pt) wire mesh resistance to generate heat with a direct current (DC) electricity supply. This DC power supply can then be controlled by computer software to reach the exact expected terminal temperature and heating period. In this study, BERAU (sub-bituminous Indonesian coal) was pulverized then converted into char with a particle size of $90-150{\mu}m$. This was used in experiments with various pressures (1-40 atm) and temperatures (1373-1673 K) under atmospheric conditions. The internal and external effectiveness factor was analyzed to determine the effects of high pressure. The intrinsic reaction kinetics of BERAU char was obtained using $n^{th}$ order reaction rate equations. The value was determined to be 203.8kJ/mol.

  • In order to understand the effect of hydrostatic pressure (HP) on Bacillus subtilis isolated from makgeolli, the survival of B. subtilis after HP treatment (400 MPa for 5 min) in various substrates including phosphate buffer, tryptone soya broth at pH 7 and 4, and makgeolli at pH 4 was evaluated depending on bacterial forms (spores and vegetative cells) and adaptation conditions ($25^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, or $10^{\circ}C$ for 24 h). Spores were generally resistant to HP (<1 log reduction) regardless of conditions. In contrast, vegetative cells were generally susceptible to HP (up to 3 log reduction-except makgeolli) and were more susceptible after 3 h at $25^{\circ}C$ compared to 24 h at $10^{\circ}C$. In vegetative cells inoculated makgeolli (7 log CFU/mL), the colonies were not detected after 24 h at $10^{\circ}C$. Consequently, B. subtilis in makgeolli easily existed as spores and the spores were resistant to HP. Results demonstrate that HP was more promising in the inactivation of vegetative cells.

  • Determining plant moisture characteristics is an essential study not only for cultivation, but also for ex-situ conservation. In this study, employing pressure-volume curve we examined moisture characteristics of Rhododendron micranthum, known as rare plant, with the aim of its ex-situ conservation. Several individuals growing in Mt. Worak, Youngwol-gun Yeonha-ri and Bongwa-gun Seokpo-ri were selected for this study, from which we collected leaves. The original bulk osmotic pressure at maximum turgor(${{\Psi}_o}^{sat}$)was -1.5 MPa in those of Mt. Worak and Seokpo-ri, which is somewhat lower than that of Yeonha-ri(-1.2 MPa). It appeared that the osmotic pressure at incipient plasmolysis(${{\Psi}_o}^{tlp}$) of leaves collected in both Mt. Worak and Seokpo-ri were -1.29 MPa, and -1.26 MPa, respectively, which are lower than that of Yeonha-ri(-1.02MPa). Maximum bulk modulus of elasticity($E_{max}$) was 14.0 MPa, 8.67 MPa in leaves collected from both Seokpo-ri and Mt. Worak, respectively, those value of which were approximately 3 times higher than that of Yeonha-ri(4.00 MPa). The values of $RWC_{tlp}$(Relative water content at incipient plasmolysis) of leaves collected in three areas, were roughly 83%, suggesting that Rhododendron micranthum has relatively high capability of containing water. Our finding on moisture characteristics of Rhododendron micranthum is similar to those of other Rhododendron spp. We suggest that individuals growing in both Worak and Seokpo-ri, are preferable to those in Yeonha-ri for ex-situ transplantation since those individuals are found to have better drought resistance.

  • Background and objective: Gastrodiae Rhizoma (GR), the rhizoma of Gastrodia elata BL., is one of the popular drugs to treat headache, dizziness, blackout, numbness of limbs, hemiplegia, facial paralysis, dysphrasia, and infantile convulsions. It has been reported that it provides an antihypertensive effect and lowers cerebrovascular resistance in animal experiments. However, there has been no data about these effects with human subjects. In this study, the author examined the effect of Gastrodiae water extracts on blood pressure and cerebrovascular reactivity in human subjects. Methods: We selected 16 normal volunteers, who were divided into 2 groups: Gastrodiae extract administration group and placebo (creamy powder) group. Using transcranial Doppler ultrasound, we monitored changes of mean flow velocity and breath-holding induced CO2 reactivity of middle cerebral artery in both groups. Mean blood pressure, heart rate and PETCO2 were measured using Compact Anesthesia Monitor. In both groups, all evaluation was performed during basal condition, and repeated at 30, 60, and 90 min after administration. Results: Gastrodiae extract decreased CO2 reactivity after administration, reaching the lowest level at 90 minutes $(-29.1\%\;vs.\;basal\;level)$, which showed significant difference compared with the placebo group (p = 0.004). In the placebo group, the pulse rates tended to decrease over time (at 90 minute, $-5.2\%$ vs. basal level) while in the Gastrodiae group the values showed nearly no change, which showed significant difference between both groups (p = 0.036). However, the changes of mean blood pressure and mean flow velocity did not show significant difference between both groups. Conclusion : This study demonstrated that Gastrodiae extract significantly decreased breath-holding induced CO2 reactivity. This result suggests that the clinical effect of Gastrodiae extract might be caused by increasing cerebral blood flow via dilation of cerebral resistant vessels instead of antihypertensive effect.

  • Pack micropiles were recently developed to improve pile capacity of general micropiles. Pack micropiles were made by warping thread bar or steel pipe of general micropile by geotexlile pack and grouting inside the pack with pressure. According to the pressure, the boring hole could be enlarged. A series of pile uplift tests were performed on three micropiles. Two out of the three piles were the pack micropiles and the other was the general micropile, in which a thread bar was used in the boring hole. According to the pressure applied to the pack micropiles, the diameter of boring hole was enlarged from 152 mm to 220 mm. Unit skin friction mobilized on side surfaces of micropiles increased with displacement of pile head and reached on a constant value, which represents that the relative displacement between piles (or thread bar) and soils was reached on critical state. And the uplift resistance of pack micropile was higher than that of general micropile. Two reasons can be considered: One is that the frictional surface increases due to enlarging diameter of boring holes and the other is that the unit skin friction could increase due to compressing effect of surrounding soils by soil displacement as much as the enlarging volume of boring hole. The compression effect appeared at deeper layer rather than surface layer. The unit skin friction mobilized on micropiles with small diameter was higher than the ones on large bored piles.

  • Precise and detailed clinical research and evaluation based on objective standards are imperative factors in securing reliability of a clinical test. Built on this principle, this clinical test has been conducted during the period between March 1999 and March 2000 dealing with 31 outpatients treated with ShiHo-GuizhiTang or ShiHo-GuizhiTang modify and ShiHo-GuizhiTang mixed prescriptions at the Sung-bo ORIENTAL MEDICAL CLINIC. A variety of information relating to those patients has been collected and analyzed under such criteria as precise diagnoses and their clinical effectiveness. The analysis was duly based on "The theory of cold syndrome". Then, the 31 patients' individual clinical information was compared one another by breaking down the results into sub-categories including gender, age, disease, main symptom, blood pressure, pulse beats, syndrome of abdomen, treatment period, modify and mixed prescription, and evaluation. The result of this clinical test can be summarized as follows: First, ShiHo-GuizhiTang appears to be more frequently prescribed in the case of female patients than in the case of male patients despite the fact that it does not necessarily need to be applied only to female. In addition, the numbers of prescriptions of ShiHo-GuizhiTang in the two age groups consisting of elementary school children and economically active adults respectively were the highest among other age groups. Second, ShiHo-GuizhiTang proved to be most effective in treatment for respiratory ailments and arthritis. Third, ShiHo-GuizhiTang brought down blood pressure of hypertension patients and at the same time benefited patients with normal or lower-than-normal blood pressure who were vulnerable to diseases due to low disease-resistance. Fourth, ShiHo-GuizhiTang was effective in the case of frequent pulse(rapid pulse) and thereby indicating the fact it carries Taiyang superficies syndrome. 지맥 arises from suppressed immune responses owing to adrenocortical hormones. ShiHo-GuizhiTang controls and revitalizes those suppressed immune systems which stem from slow pulse and, as a consequence of that process, helps them return to normal condition of pulse. Fifth, from the standpoint of syndrome of abdomen, feeling of obstruction in the epigastrium serves as an important standard in the process of diagnosing diseases and evaluating effectiveness of treatments. Sixth, according to the results of the clinical test with the 31 patients, a total of 81 percent of test subjects benefited from the treatment. The figure is the sum of 52 percent of I-class (both main symptom and accompanying symptoms had been eliminated) and 29 percent of II-class (part of main symptom and accompanying symptoms had been eliminated) respectively. All told it is safe to say that ShiHo-GuizhiTang can elect to be a viable clinical treatment. In conclusion, it is estimated that this clinical study has drawn up guidelines for objective diagnostic standards and evaluation on specific treatments' effectiveness. This will lead to more general application of ShiHo-GuizhiTang. On top of that, this study could also provide an opportunity to stress the significance of ShiHo-GuizhiTang and ShiHo-GuizhiTang modify and ShiHo-GuizhiTang mixed prescriptions as an alternative treatment for collagen disease which comes from environmental degradation and pollution.
